The Failure of Economic Theory. Lessons from Chaos Theory  [PDF]
Marisa Faggini, Anna Parziale
Modern Economy (ME) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/me.2012.31001
Abstract: The crisis that was being shaken the world economy should push economists to wonder about the approach used to analyse economic phenomena. The motivations that have generated it, describing a whole of interdependencies, interacttions, are clear and convincing. But a question remains: if the situation is so clear a posterior why economists have not been able to foresee it? What is happening to economic science if it is not able to recognize an economic crisis before it “steps on it“? How is it possible that the economic science was caught off guard yet again? Besides, what is the implication for the status of economics as a science if it is not able to successfully deal with real economic problems? The aim of the paper is to show the weakness of traditional economic theory and what improvements in terms of description and foresight could be obtained applying chaos theory to the study of economic phenomena.
Strengthening Science Vocabulary through the Use of Imagery Interventions with College Students  [PDF]

Creative Education (CE) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ce.2012.37184
Abstract: This study was an extension of previous work designed to examine the effect of imagery on science vocabulary learning. One hundred students enrolled in a private college in Brooklyn, New York were randomly assigned to four different interventions: Word Only, Picture Presentation, Image Creation—No Picture, and Image Creation—Picture. These interventions were developed taking into account the ability of images to facilitate vocabulary learning, the dual coding theory, and depth of processing. Results demonstrated that students in the imagery creation groups (Image Creation—No Picture and Image Creation—Picture) scored higher on the outcome measures than students placed in the Word Only intervention at immediate recall. However, there were no significant differences shown among the imagery treatments or at delayed recall. The outcome scores from each group also followed the pattern predicted in that the deeper the students processed the “to be learned” vocabulary words, the more words they were able to acquire and retain. This work extends the previous research and highlights the benefits of vocabulary instruction using imagery at all instructional levels.
Aportes Tecnológicos en las intervenciones nutricionales poblacionales.
Anales Venezolanos de Nutrición , 2005,
Abstract: abstract the food industry, using different technologies, produces foodstuffs for nutritional interventions that can reduce malnourishment in the short and long term. when this is a consequence of excessive consumption, it is associated with overweight or obesity, diabetes, dislipídemias, whilst deficiencies consumption are generally associated to protein energetic malnourishment or of some micronutrient: iodine, iron, calcium, vitamin a and vitamin c. the food industry of the country has installed capacity to process national or imported raw material allowing for the supply of foodstuffs in quantity and quality according to the needs of the population. the technology available in the food industry can contribute to solve the problems of malnourishment, supplying foodstuffs for the nutritional protection programs. this can be done through joint programs between government and industry, as is the case of the marketing of products of the basic basket of goods through the mercal and the small grocery shops ("bodegas populares") program, or enriched products such as fruit juice or nectars with calcium and folic acid; milk and dairy products with iron, magnesium and calcium; pre-cooked corn flour with proteins and calcium, and rice with iron, calcium and vitamin a. the fortification or enrichment can be targeted to vulnerable groups of the population such as children, pregnant women or the elderly, who have specific requirements of fixed nutrients such as folic acid, zinc, magnesium, vitamin e and fatty acids omega 3. all the forms of actions can be carried out manufacturing special foodstuffs for the nutritional protection programs that comply with government regulations, where the manufacturer gets a fair price and the population benefits.
La incorporación de los territorios nacionales en el proceso de consolidación del estado argentino: El caso del territorio de la pampa central
Andes , 2005,
Abstract: in most of the manuscripts by the learned argentinean elite of the xixth century, the idea of civilization was identified as a manifestation of the national identity, an assumption that lead this elite to legitimate its own civilizing function and impulse a process of state consolidation. this process required the complete occupation of the territory dominated by the indigenous, which were considered -along with the caudillos- responsible for the failure of the national unification. the new territories were defined by the states power structures as virgin areas with infinite possibilities and economic advantages to be exploited. this political argument attracted national and foreign settlers that occupied these lands and began the productive organization of the future provinces. in this work i review the process of incorporation and subsequent organization of frontier lands after the conquista del desierto. particularly, i analyse the political and administrative structure of the territorio nacional de la pampa central, officially constituted in 1884 with the establishment of the first military authorities appointed to found and run new towns.

Forma??o em psicologia: análise dos aspectos estruturais de um curso de gradua??o
Japur, Marisa;
Paidéia (Ribeir?o Preto) , 1996, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-863X1996000100010
Abstract: on basis of previous research, the objective of the present study was to investigate the structural aspects of the psychology course of ffclrp-usp. faculty members, contracted psychologists, volunteer supervisors, 2nd to 5th year students and graduate students participated in the study, for a total of 72 subjects. data were collected using open questions based on a set of systematized information on the curricular structure of the course and analysed by content category analysis. the results indicated 6 categories of more general consideration of the course as a whole and 16 categories that focused on specific parts of a course, and their analysis suggests that the absence of a commom project for the undergraduate course has favored a dense, but fragmented, type of training, permitting early pseudospecializations, and that this disequilibrium in training is linked to emphasis on the quantitative model as a foundation of scientific training and the clinical-diadic model as the foundation of professional training.

Abstract: we analyze some implications of humean scepticism regarding the existence of a permanent and substantial self that would precede and coordinate experience. two proposals are presented: francisco varela's theory of selforganizing aggregates and william james 'thesis about ideas that know. we then examine three problems raised by "no-self stances of the james-varela kind, viz., the problems of identity, of temporality and of intentionality (as purpose). we sketch some solutions and we suggest that the consideration of a "no-self" paradigm is still a matter of speculative philosophy.
