Abstract: this study presents a reflection on ethnography, as a means for developing knowledge in nursing. from the anthropologic conception of ethnography, and the comparison of a few studies by nurses who have used ethnography as a method/methodology in their research, considerations are made about problem solving techniques, the theoretical framework, the option for ethnography as a methodological mean, the conception and involvement with fieldwork and the ethnographic text developed within the nursing care setting. a few implications are then presented, making possible to perceive a special way "ethnonursing" has to contribute towards the discipline of nursing.

Monticelli, Marisa;Elsen, Ingrid;
Texto & Contexto - Enfermagem , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-07072006000100003
Abstract: this qualitative study looks to identify the representations that nursing employees maintain about culture, upon developing the care process for families within a unit of multiple-patient rooms. in order to make the study more in-depth, definitions and meanings were extracted from the anthropology of health and symbolic anthropology. participative observation and thematic interviews were used in the collection of data. as a result, the data was analyzed and three categories emanated: "the beliefs of families are very interesting"; "the irrelevance and the undervaluing of the family's culture"; and "the place for beliefs is `outside'". the results demonstrate that for workers, the family's culture is interpreted as something residual, irrelevant, and as an obstacle to be overcome. it is presented as something which deserves little status, principally if equipped with sufficient biomedical knowledge to care for women and newborns during their births.
Monticelli, Marisa;Elsen, Ingrid;
Texto & Contexto - Enfermagem , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-07072005000200003
Abstract: this is a study of a qualitative nature, with the objective to comprehend the network of symbols and significances expressed by nurses and families living through the narrative period in a multiple-patient recovery room of the maternity ward in a public hospital. the theoretical support for this study is founded on anthropological studies that utilize narrative therapies in data collection and interpretation. in order to collect the data, participative observation techniques and ethnographic interviews were applied. the process of categorizing and analyzing the data was based upon ethno-nursing. the principle results indicate that within the context of this investigation, workers seek the transformation of the clinical period into the narrative period, adopting suppositions that identify with the woman who has given birth, the newborn, and the family as an "other" involved with exceptions. they also identify with the need to individualize their care. beyond that, the narrative period is evoked through lucid performances, use of non-verbal communication, and the daily exercise of "patience".
