Abstract: this paper examines the challenge faced by the scientific community of ecological economy to serve as a paradigm; specifically to address the issue of sustainability from the latin american context and different from the orthodox vision. in this discussion is essential to focus the discussion on the methodological and epistemic premises arising from economic rationality; because this is the rationality that reproduces and justifies orthodoxy. finally, it stresses the importance of incorporating a dialogue of knowledge and ethics-historical perspective and explore various knowledges critics and alternate to the economic rationality.

Abstract: En este artículo se analiza el reto enfrentado por la comunidad científica de la economía ecológica para asumirse como un paradigma para abordar el tema de la sustentabilidad en el contexto latinoamericano y diferenciado de la visión ortodoxa. Se identifica como fundamental no sólo cuestionar los criterios metodológicos, sino las premisas epistémicas emanadas de la racionalidad económica desde la cual se reproduce y justifica la ortodoxia. En congruencia con ello se destaca como tarea pendiente de la economía ecológica -como campo emergente- la incorporación de un diálogo de saberes y la perspectiva ético-histórica; así como la exploración de diversos saberes críticos y alternos a la racionalidad económica.
Un enfoque alternativo para la evaluación y dise o de edificaciones de mampostería en zonas sísmicas

Abstract: En este trabajo se evalúa la demanda y capacidad de deformación de edificaciones de mampostería dentro de un enfoque alternativo de evaluación y dise o por sismo de este tipo de edificaciones. Para esta evaluación se emplean registros de aceleraciones obtenidos en eventos sísmicos en los que se ha observado da os o colapsos en edificaciones de mampostería. También se emplea una medida de da o por sismo para la evaluación del comportamiento global de edificaciones de mampostería de tabique confinado. Los resultados de emplear esta medida se comparan con el comportamiento observado de este tipo de edificaciones en los eventos sísmicos estudiados. Estos resultados son congruentes con este comportamiento observado.

Cosmological Constraints in SUSY with Yukawa Unification

Abstract: The cosmological relic density of the lightest supersymmetric particle of the minimal supersymmetric standard model is calculated under the assumption of gauge and Yukawa coupling unification. We employ radiative electroweak breaking with universal boundary conditions from gravity-mediated supersymmetry breaking. Further constraints are imposed by the experimental bounds on the b-quark mass and the BR(b -> s gamma). We find that coannihilation of the lightest supersymmetric particle, which turns out to be an almost pure bino, with the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle (the lightest stau) is crucial for reducing its relic density to an acceptable level.
Lepton Flavor Violation in SUSY models with U(1)-textures

Abstract: U(1)-family symmetries have led to successful predictions of the fermion mass spectrum and the mixing angles of the hadronic sector. In the context of the supersymmetric unified theories, they further imply a non-trivial mass structure for the scalar partners, giving rise to new sources of flavour violation. While tau->mu gamma decays are mostly expected to arise at rates significantly smaller than the current experimental limits, the mu -> e gamma rare decays impose important bounds on the model parameters. Even if universal soft-terms are assumed at the GUT scale, when massive neutrinos are included in these theories, new mixings appear in the soft-terms. The predicted branching ratios for rare decays are in this case below the experimental bounds.
Yukawa couplings and proton decay in SUSY models

Abstract: We discuss proton decay induced by dimension--5 operators in supersymmetric models containing extra hypercharge-1/3 color-triplets. We derive a general formula relating dimension-5 operator to the color-triplet mass matrix. We show that certain zeros in the triplet mass-matrix together with some triplet coupling selection rules can lead to elimination of dimension-5 operators. We apply this mechanism to SU(5) and flipped SU(5) theories with extended Higgs sectors.
A Low Sample Size Estimator for K Distributed Noise  [PDF]

Abstract: In this paper, we derive a new method for estimating the parameters of the K-distribution when a limited number of samples are available. The method is based on an approximation of the Bessel function of the second kind that reduces the complexity of the estimation formulas in comparison to those used by the maximum likelihood algorithm. The proposed method has better performance in comparison with existing methods of the same complexity giving a lower mean squared error when the number of samples used for the estimation is relatively low.
Computer Platform Adaptive Interference Cancellation Using Higher-Order Statistics  [PDF]

Abstract: Broadband wireless interference in a computer platform is the result of multiple dynamic electromagnetic emission sources. This interference is non-Gaussian and a receiver design based on the Gaussian assumption will yield suboptimal performance. In fact, it has a double-sided K-distribution and needs to be treated differently in the design process. When dealing with this type of interference in the presence of white Gaussian noise, traditional interference/noise cancellation schemes do not produce satisfactory results. In this paper, we present an interference mitigation method which improves BER performance. We do this by using the cross-cumulant as the criterion of goodness. Specifically, our algorithm is based on higher order statistics (HOS) and is designed to reconstruct and to cancel the interference in a recursive fashion. The algorithm is tested on both BPSK and OFDM communication environments. We compare performance in terms of BER against other cancellation methods.
