Real Time Intrusion Prediction based on Optimized Alerts with Hidden Markov Model

Abstract: Cyber attacks and malicious activities are rapidlybecoming a major threat to proper secure organization.Many security tools may be installed in distributed systemsand monitor all events in a network. Security managers oftenhave to process huge numbers of alerts per day, produced bysuch tools. Intrusion prediction is an important technique tohelp response systems reacting properly before the networkis compromised. In this paper, we propose a frameworkto predict multi-step attacks before they pose a serioussecurity risk. Hidden Markov Model (HMM) is used toextract the interactions between attackers and networks.Since alerts correlation plays a critical role in prediction,a modulated alert severity through correlation concept isused instead of just individual alerts and their severity.Modulated severity generates prediction alarms for the mostinteresting steps of multi-step attacks and improves theaccuracy. Our experiments on the Lincoln Laboratory 2000data set show that our algorithm perfectly predicts multi-step attacks before they can compromise the network.
Diversity Through N-Version Programming: Current State, Challenges and Recommendations

Abstract: N-version programming is a software development paradigm that draws upon the concept of diversity to increase the reliability of software. The central idea is to independently produce multiple functionally equivalent versions of a program, and execute them in parallel. If the versions fail independently, then the probability of multiple versions producing a faulty output on any given input is very small; much lower than the failure probability of any single version. In this paper, we examine and contrast various experiments that have been performed to evaluate the benefits of this approach and draw some conclusions. We find that for diversity to be effective, it must be introduced in a targeted and informed manner and encompass several phases of the software’s development.
La Subordination de la Femme à L’Homme Selon le Saint-Siège

Abstract: Se situant dans la perspective de la théorie féministe de Judith Butler, cet article montre comment la femme est produite comme l’autre de l’homme dans la théologie du Saint-Siège selon une triple opération d’appropriation, de distanciation et de subordination. Pour la théologie vaticane, le Dieu, qui a aimé le premier, est masculin; l’homme doit concrétiser les deux dimensions du masculin et du féminin afin de réaliser sa pleine humanité; mais la femme trouve son accomplissement complètement dans le féminin. Seule la femme déchue désire s’approprier les caractéristiques masculines. Cette hiérarchisation de la différence sexuelle trouve une double fondation dans la volonté éternelle du Dieu (versant transcendantal) et dans la nature anthropologique de la femme (versant empirique).
Simulation multimédia à interactivité variable

Abstract: [Fran ais] Herzberg est un environnement de simulation multimédia permettant de visualiser et d’explorer la vibration et la rotation des molécules. Il permet de créer des documents formés d’un ensemble de pages affichant une ou deux molécules dans des configurations prédéfinies ; un texte et une voix d’explication peuvent être associés à chaque page. Il est possible de fixer pour chaque document le niveau d’interactivité. On peut également, sans effectuer de programmation, ajouter de nouvelles molécules ou modifier les caractéristiques des molécules prédéfinies. Ainsi, selon l’approche pédagogique privilégiée, le niveau des apprenants ou l’étape dans le scénario d’apprentissage, Herzberg peut servir d’outil de visualisation associé à un document de base, de simulateur destiné à l’exploration autonome, ou encore de système-auteur permettant de créer ses propres documents multimédias. [English] Herzberg is a multimedia simulation environment that allows the vibration and rotation of molecules to be visualized and explored. It can be used to create documents consisting of a series of pages displaying one or two molecules in predefined configurations ; text and voiceover explanation may be associated with each page. The level of interactivity may be set for each document. New molecules may be added, or the characteristics of the predefined molecules edited, without programming. Thus, depending on the preferred pedagogical approach, the learning level, or the learning phase, Herzberg can be a useful visualization tool in association with a base document, a simulator for independent exploration, or an authoring system for creating one’s own multimedia documents.

Abstract: [Fran ais] Avec le développement de la diffusion en ligne de documents scientifiques, la primauté reconnue traditionnellement à l’imprimé devient de moins en moins pertinente ; les références à des ressources et documents en ligne forment ainsi une proportion significative des références dans certaines revues scientifiques, notamment celles qui, comme la RITPU, s’intéressent à l’information et à la communication. Dans cet article, on passe d’abord en revue les divers r les des références répertoriés dans la littérature. On décrit ensuite les caractéristiques et les conditions permettant aux documents en ligne de jouer pleinement ces r les. On montre enfin comment, dans l’adaptation fran aise des normes de l’APA adoptée par la RITPU, certains choix touchant le format des notices des documents en ligne facilitent la tache des évaluateurs et des lecteurs des articles. Par la même occasion, les auteurs y trouveront conseils et consignes visant à rendre plus pertinente et efficace cette dimension souvent négligée de la communication scientifique. [English] With the increase of online scientific publications, the traditional primacy of print documents has become less and less relevant. In some scientific journals, notably in the field of information technology and its applications (like IJTHE), a significant part of the citations now refer to online documents. This paper first reviews the various roles played by citations in scientific texts according to the literature. It then describes the characteristics and conditions which must be met if citations to online documents are to fully play these roles. Finally, it shows how, in the French-language adaptation of the APA reference formats which was adopted by IJTHE, a few choices have been made regarding online references in order to ease the task of both referees and readers. By the same token, authors will find guidelines and suggestions which should improve the relevance and efficiency of this often overlooked dimension of scientific communication.

Foi inicialmente apresentado como uma conferência, realizada na Assembléia Legislativa do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, no dia 23 de outubro de 1998. O autor aborda o problema dos imensos recursos informacionais, depositados nos arquivos de nossos dias, frente as dificuldades legais de tratamento destes acervos. Analisa o papel da lei como reguladora das atividades decorrentes da instala o das políticas de arquivo em cada país. Baseia-se em fontes da América do Norte (EUA e Canadá) e européias. Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to interpret polynomial invariants of strongly invertible links in terms of Khovanov homology theory. To a divide, that is a proper generic immersion of a finite number of copies of the unit interval and circles in a 2-disc, one can associate a strongly invertible link in the 3-sphere. This can be generalized to signed divides : divides with + or - sign assignment to each crossing point. Conversely, to any link $L$ that is strongly invertible for an involution $j$, one can associate a signed divide. Two strongly invertible links that are isotopic through an isotopy respecting the involution are called strongly equivalent. Such isotopies give rise to moves on divides. In a previous paper of the author, one can find an exhaustive list of moves that preserves strong equivalence, together with a polynomial invariant for these moves, giving therefore an invariant for strong equivalence of the associated strongly invertible links. We prove in this paper that this polynomial can be seen as the graded Euler characteristic of a graded complex of vector spaces. Homology of such complexes is invariant for the moves on divides and so is invariant through strong equivalence of strongly invertible links.
Relation of mitral valve morphology and motion to mitral regurgitation severity in patients with mitral valve prolapse

Abstract: We prospectively analyzed transthoracic echocardiograms of 38 consecutive patients with MVP and various degrees of MR. In the parasternal long-axis view, leaflets length, diastolic leaflet thickness, prolapsing depth, billowing area and non-coaptation distance between both leaflets were measured.Twenty patients (53%) and 18 patients (47%) were identified as having moderate to severe and mild MR respectively (ERO = 45 ± 27 mm2 vs. 5 ± 7 mm2, p < 0.001). Diastolic leaflet thickness was similar in both groups (5.5 ± 0.9 mm vs. 5.3 ± 1 mm, p = 0.57). On multivariate analysis, the non-coaptation distance (OR 7.9 per 1 mm increase; 95% CI 1.72-37.2) was associated with significant MR. Thick mitral valve leaflet as traditionally reported (≥ 5 mm) was not associated with significant MR (OR 0.9; 95% CI 0.2-3.4).In patients with MVP, thick mitral leaflet is not associated with significant MR. Leaflet thickness is probably not as important in risk stratification as previously reported in patients with MVP. Other anatomical and geometrical features of the mitral valve apparatus area appear to be much more closely related to MR severity.Mitral valve thickness ≥ 5 mm is used as a criterion to distinguish classical from non-classical form of mitral valve prolapse (MVP). Classical form of MVP has been associated with a higher risk of mitral regurgitation (MR) and cardiovascular complications [1-8]. However, increased leaflet thickness is frequently observed in MVP even without MR [4], and thus might be an imperfect criterion to stratify the clinical risk of patients with MVP. Previous studies on MVP and mitral valve morphology have not used quantitative methods to assess MR severity. Most of them used semi-quantitative evaluations of MR such as jet-to-left-atrial area ratios. Abstract: [Fran ais] Les simulations adisciplinaires présentent les mêmes caractéristiques que les autres simulations informatiques, sauf qu’elles ne sont associées à aucun référent ou phénomène particulier. Nous proposons d’abord un modèle des processus qu’effectuent les concepteurs et les usagers en rapport avec une simulation, ce qui permet de cerner les conditions conférant à la simulation un caractère disciplinaire (ou non), du point de vue de chacun de ces acteurs. Nous décrivons ensuite les versions successives, de moins en moins disciplinaires, d’une simulation que nous avons développée et expérimentée dans un cours d’épistémologie s’adressant à de futurs enseignants. Nous présentons enfin, comme résultats d’une recherche exploratoire, les caractéristiques des démarches de résolution de problème que nous avons observées dans une activité d’apprentissage ouverte fondée sur cette simulation. [English] Domain-independent simulations share the same characteristics as usual computer simulations, with the exception of being related to no particular referent or phenomenon. We first propose a model of the processes followed respectively by designers and end-users of a simulation, which reveals the conditions that make a simulation domain dependent (or not) from the perspective of each of these actors. We then present the successive, less and less domain-dependent, versions of a simulation we developed and tested in a university-level epistemology course intended for prospective teachers. Finally, we describe the main characteristics of the problem-solving processes we observed among these students, engaged in an open-ended learning activity based upon this simulation.
