Abstract: in this paper a particular model is developed and used to explain the outcome of hospital mortality rate and quantity of inpatient care in hospital care markets. the model focuses on the brazilian national health system (sistema único de saúde - sus) but it may be helpful in portraying a broad range of health systems. the effects of movements in underlying factors that may cause shifts in both demand and supply are readily predictable.

Abstract: this study analyzes the waiting lines for solid organ transplants in brazil's unified national health system. by using a queuing theory model, we estimate the waiting times for different organs under alternative scenarios. the model reveals the elasticity of various waiting times with respect to arrival and service rates for organ transplantation within the system. average waiting time for a solid organ transplant is very long and highly elastic in brazil. the article discusses some important possibilities for reducing such waiting times.

Abstract: this article will have fulfilled its purpose if it convinces the reader of the existence of a new rhetoric in the official discourse on teaching and that this new discourse possesses various explanations and can have implications for the pedagogical practices to which it is destined. the analysis presented here of the curricula of portuguese language and of the national curricular parameters for portuguese language _ pcn, leads us to believe that a set of declared strategies give this discourse a double generic appearance: of dissemination and of scientific discourse. these strategies can be seen, preferably, in the footnotes and bibliographic references.

Abstract: the present paper assesses health care services delivered in ambulatories and hospitals in the municipalities of the state of rio de janeiro, brazil. the assessment is based on the use of non-stochastic frontiers models (data envelopment analysis - dea) combined with regression techniques. by taking advantage of resources and production data, optimal levels of consumption and services are obtained. the paper shows relationships related to technical efficiency, gdp, population size and average length-of-stay.

Abstract: there are several researches about the process of teaching and learning writing in basic education. however, in brazil academic writing hasn't received the deserved attention yet. in this article, some elements that are intrinsic to the written production conditions of students in undergraduate course offered by one university will be analysed. bakhtin's conception, in which the control of a genre is seen as a social behavior, associated with an ethnographic approach, constitute the main theoretical reference to this study. approaching the text ethnographically means to treat it as a feature or as an element from a social situation, which includes the values, the rules, the meanings, the attitudes, as well as the models of behavior of the participants that take part in the interaction. the conclusion is that the commitment of the university with teaching and learning academic writing requires researches about the linguistic skills and competences, and also about the foundations and strategies that allow us to rebuild the principles and beliefs that have contributed to the construction of students' relation with academic literacy practices often considered 'shy', 'deficient', 'inadequate', and 'tense'.

Abstract: this text is organised according to some theoretical-methodological basic principles in order to give support to the analyses of educational texts from a discursive perspective. it takes as its object the portuguese language curriculum and the national curricular parameters published in brazil in the last two decades of the 20th century. by placing discourse in the field of curriculum studies, the curriculum is analysed through the author/reader?s representations inscribed in its discourse strategies. besides the pedagogical innovations that these documents propose they also introduce a new rhetoric in the curricular genre, emphasising its own features in connection to the scientific discourses: linguistics and educational sciences.

Abstract: S o inúmeros os trabalhos sobre o ensino-aprendizagem da escrita no ensino fundamental e médio. No entanto, a escrita acadêmica ainda n o tem recebido a merecida aten o, no Brasil. Ser o analisados aqui alguns elementos próprios das condi es de produ o de escrita de alunos de um curso de gradua o. A concep o bakhtiniana, para a qual o domínio de um gênero é um comportamento social, articulada com uma abordagem etnográfica, delineia o referencial teórico-metodológico principal. Abordar o texto etnograficamente significa tratá-lo como um tra o ou um elemento de uma situa o social, que inclui igualmente os valores, regras, significados e atitudes, assim como modelos de comportamento dos participantes da intera o. Conclui-se que o envolvimento da universidade com o ensino-aprendizagem da escrita acadêmica demanda pesquisas sobre habilidades e competências linguísticas e também sobre fundamentos e estratégias que permitam refazer princípios e cren as que têm levado nossos alunos a uma rela o "tímida", "deficiente", "inadequada" e tensa com as práticas acadêmicas letradas. Abstract: Esto texto presenta reflexiones acerca de los conceptos de la aventura y del riesgo, revelados en actividades en naturaleza. Los discursos se encuentran en una investigación, que trabaja con un universo de razones, de aspiraciones, valores, creencias y de actitudes, correspondiendo a un espacio más profundo de los procesos, de las relaciones y de los fenómenos. Es posible percibir que las actividades de la aventura en naturaleza tienen muchos significados, relacionados con nuevos descubrimientos, nuevos desafíos, incertidumbre, cooperación, amistad, entre otras. Tales actividades presentan diversas formas de experimentación, se alando más que el riesgo físico: el riesgo simbólico y imaginario.

Abstract: Theatre, beyond its original mystery and yet in itself, contains, according to José Marinho’s meditation, the human, intimate drama, the pungent experience of looking for nonrepresentable truth. As a convention representing the world, itself representing other worlds, Theater clarifies, in the same large, baroque Molière’s way, the same debate about truth and lie, Poetry and Philosophy confounded, light and shadow images altogether; Marinho’s liberating criticism converges with classical literary renovated canon as far as both destroy a schematic tradition, hostile towards margins, through lucid, uncertain questions. Marinho evokes a verse from L’Avare, he transforms it, developing freely Reason refusing its’ totalitarianism in order to see what Molière’s lovers can see of life and joy, thanks to their love.
