Massimi, Marina;
História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59702006000200004
Abstract: the article analyzes a number of sermons employing food metaphors, preached in brazil during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. the use of metaphors drawn from listeners' daily lives was common in sermons during the colonial period, underpinned by two theoretical considerations: 1) the aristotelian theory of knowledge, where the senses play a primary role as an access way to comprehension of more abstract ideas and as a means for urging listeners to change their behavior patterns by affecting their emotions and their wills; 2) the platonic doctrine, where images are important in preserving our memory of ideas. the sacred oratory of the colonial period is of major interest to cultural history, since these sermons served as an invaluable way of transmitting doctrine and of shaping behavior in a society where orality was the chief method for spreading knowledge.

Massimi, Marina;
Psicologia USP , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-65642008000400005
Abstract: we intend to provide evidence, in a multidisciplinary and historical perspective, the process of persuasion by which the recipient was transformed from an active and critical individual into a passive product consumer. in the history of western culture, there are two opposing conceptions regarding the process of persuasion. on the one side, it is understood that persuasion should offer an experience to the individual, who is conceived as an active and intentional receiver of the stimuli from the external world, a living and spiritual body (capable of judging and making decisions). on the other side, persuasion is considered an experience induction, in which the individual is considered a mere passive receptor of external stimuli, a body determined by reaction mechanisms.
Conhecimento e dinamismo psíquico em dois serm?es no Brasil Colonial
Massimi, Marina;
Psicologia: Teoria e Pesquisa , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-37722005000100009
Abstract: the work refers to the relations between knowledge and psychic dynamism in two sermons preached in brazil by eusebio de mattos and by bento da trindade. in such sermons, a conception of affective knowledge implying the activities of all animistic powers defines the ecstasy of the mystics as an act of the understanding applied to their supreme object, god. this vision is based on philosophic psychology and on the aristotelic-thomist theory of knowledge, used by the rhetoric of the modern age. topics such as knowledge based on evidence and affective understanding introduce the conception of a participative modality of knowledge, which allows the change of nature in terms of transformation of the individual who knows into the known object.

A memória ventre da alma
Massimi, Marina;
Revista Latinoamericana de Psicopatologia Fundamental , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-47142010000400010
Abstract: this article approaches the theme of memory as proposed in a sermon by father vieira (1654), where he reconstructs conceptual matrixes (st. augustine's and st. bernard's conceptions of memory) and practices (the orthopraxis tradition developed in monastic communities of the middle ages). for both thinkers, memory is conceived as an active and comprehensive process and is intimately associated with emotion and imagination. it not only recalls; it also organizes experiences and concepts according to a scheme oriented by places and routes, making them available for invention and cognitive construction.
