Abstract: this article objectifies to reflect on teenage drug abuse as well as the influence of cultural family practices. identity build-up takes on meaningful outlines in adolescence, when an array of factors is at stake which brings new outlook to life with unique meanings. family in our society takes up a basic system, with a broad value diversity, organizational ways of living and functioning such as teenagers’ health care. the existence of a set of family values, beliefs and practices take up the cultural background which guides family actions. these actions entail some "bad family habits" such as drug abuse, a social and family problem affecting not only an individual’s physical and mental health but also society as a whole. possibilities of introduction of healthier beliefs and habits are pointed out by means of individual work carried out with families.

Abstract: this qualitative research was performed with 11 primary school teachers at a state school in the city of curitiba/ brazil, with the goal to identify how primary school teachers perceive adolescence. the information was collected by means of a group discussion strategy and organized in four theme-categories. the teachers' statements revealed the plurality of the adolescence process, stressing its uniqueness. adolescence is a unique phenomenon, varying according to culture, social class, race, gender and age, configuring distinctive ways of experiencing it. all this diversity, however, enables to develop relations with teenagers, including attention, nurturing, comfort, patience and sensitiveness, besides getting across curricular contents.
Therapeutic communication underlying interpersonal relationship between elementary school adolescent and teacher

Abstract: Descriptive research, qualitative in nature, carried out with 11 teachers from an elementary school in Curitiba/Brazil. Objective: to bring about effective interpersonal relationship between teaching staff and teenage students. Data collection was performed by means of group discussion strategy. Theoretical landmark was Therapeutic Communication by Maguida Stefanelli. Results were presented under the following theme categories: “Communication in the interpersonal relationship between teacher and teenage student”; “The teacher acknowledges the therapeutic function in communication”; “The specificities in teenagers’ communication”; they pointed out the relevance to health and education professionals in learning therapeutic communication, specially for those who work with teenagers, in order to make pedagogic relationship and actions more effective, less conflicting and trustworthy. Participants became aware of how important it is to deepen their knowledge on the studied theme for a constructive teaching practice among teenagers.
Nursing care facing the recognition of patients’ belief or religion: undergraduates’ perceptions

Abstract: Descriptive-exploratory research carried out in 2006 with 10 nursing undergraduates from the tenth term. Data were collected by means of a semi-structured interview and results were organized in 5 theme-categories: Featuring subjects. The importance for human beings to believe in a superior entity. The nurse as a facilitator for patients to bond whatever may provide them strength to face suffering. Knowing and respecting patients’ belief / religion for effective nursing care. Students’ understanding of human beings’ spiritual dimension. It was evidenced that students value all forms of people’s spiritual expression and were concerned to deliver nursing care in human beings’ spiritual dimension, even those who stated not to have a specific belief or religion, acknowledged the significance of such care. They pointed out the importance of believing in a superior entity for human beings and man usually believes in something, in a god. They considered indispensable for nurses to help those who believe in something that make their lives meaningful, to connect with such a force in order to face and overcome crises, disease and even death. They pondered that an effective care deems necessary for caregivers to use empathy and by means of actions such as listening and talking, nurses may foster comfort and help for patients and their families, which is a significant expression of nursing care.

Abstract: objective: to apprehend family members’ perceptions on treatment of mental patients in the presence of the brazilian psychiatric reform. methodology: qualitative exploratory research carried out in 2010 at a psychiatric hospital in paraná state/brazil. ten family members of mental patients were the subjects. data were collected by means of a semistructured interview and analyzed through thematic analysis. results: from the analysis, three categories emerged: treatment of mental patients in the presence of the brazilian psychiatric reform; outpatient mental health services; family members’ physical and emotional distress. discussion: the families perceived a new way of treating mental patients based on social reinsertion with the participation of a multiprofessional team. conclusion: more support is deemed necessary on the part of mental patients’ families mediated by brazilian public policies.

Abstract: this descriptive, qualitative study was performed from september to november 2009, at a family health strategy unit in a city in the metropolitan region of curitiba-pr. participants were eight families, represented by mothers, fathers and grandmothers. the study objective was to identify the family social support network for the promotion of child development, from the family's perspective. data were collected through focal groups and subjected to content analysis. the family social support network was classified as located, consisting of 16 members distributed between the informal and formal network, established by close relationships, with a smaller level of commitment, and occasional. it is considered that the health workers' understanding regarding the role and importance of this network favors the networking proposal between members that contribute to supporting families in the promotion of child development.

Abstract: this is an intervention study conducted in a unidade básica de saúde (basic health unit) in colombo, parana, brazil, from march to november 2009, with 35 carriers of cronic diseases aged between 18 and 60 years, and enrolled in the hypertension and diabetes program. the objectives were to identify their knowledge about arterial hypertension and act through educational group activities. data were collected though semistructured interviews and four group meetings, and the following categories emerged from the analysis: "understanding of the disease" and "ways of caring". it was found that users knew the disease, its risk factors and possible complications, and that educational activities favored the sharing of experiences, provided reflection and the possibility of treatment management. this is a strategy that should be used and promoted by nurses.

Abstract: qualitative descriptive, exploratory research developed in 2009, in the emergency service of a general hospital in curitiba, paraná, brazil. aim to investigate how developed the nursing care of patients with clinical and psychiatric comorbidity. participated six nurses, seven nursing technicians and 14 nursing assistants. we obtained data through semi-structured interviews and submitted to analysis of thematic content. the categories that emerged from the data were: care is the technical and without specificity; safety and protection of patient and physical restraint and chemical as protective measures. nursing care developed for patients with clinical and psychiatric comorbidity are without specificity, with emphasis on basic care, physical and chemical restraint. it was concluded that there is need for the establishment of local training in mental health and awareness of nurses about the care to this clientele.
