IMPACT OF AGRICULTURAL BIOTECHNOLOGY ON ENVIRONMENT AND FOOD SECURITY UTJECAJ POLJOPRIVREDNE BIOTEHNOLOGIJE NA OKOLI I SIGURNOST HRANE
Marijan Jot
Poljoprivreda (Osijek) , 2003,
Abstract: The application of modern biotechnology in agricultural production processes has generated new ethical, economic, social and environmental dilemmas confronting scientists all over the world. While current knowledge is insufficient for assessing the promised benefits and possible risks of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), the principle of “substantial equivalence” in comparing GM and conventional food is profoundly flawed and scientifically insupportable. The current generation of GMOs provide small benefits except corporate profit and marginally improved grower returns. The TRIPS agreement has allowed worldwide patenting of genes and microorganisms, as well as genetically engineered organisms. Granting patents on life encourages biopiracy and the theft of genetic resources belonging to the local community. At the same time, the patented products are sold at relatively high prices to developing countries – the same countries from which the product originated.
EFFECT OF POWDERY MILDEW (Erysiphe graminis D.C. f.sp. tritici Marchal) ATTACK ON YIELD AND PHISICAL PARAMETERS OF WHEAT (Triticum aestivum ssp. vulgare) GRAIN QUALITY
Vesna Samobor,Marija Vukobratovi?,Marijan Jot
Poljoprivreda (Osijek) , 2005,
Abstract: Evaluation of yield and phisical grain quality parameters of fungicidaly (Duett) treated and nontreated variantswere taken in Krizevci during the three years (1999-2001) on 25 divergent wheat genotypes. Depending on the intensity of attack, the average grain yield in the three year testing period and 25 genotypes of nontreted variants decreased by 8.1%, the average hectolitre weight decreased by 1.2% and the average TKW by 5.1%.The average decrease of the most sensitive cultivar (Marija) was 20.8% for yield, 2.6% for hectolitre weight and 13.1% for TKW. During a strong attack of powdery mildew this decrease for the most sensitive cultivar was 36.4% for yield in 1999, 3.8% for hectoliter weight in 2001, and 20.2% for TKW in 2001.Average differences were nonsignificant for the tested properties in the completely resistant genotype KS92WGRC21 (0.7%, 0.5 and 0.2% respectively).
PLEIOTROPIC EFFECT OF Rht3 DWARFING GENE ON SOME TRAITS OF WHEAT (Tr. aestivum L. em Thell)
Marijan Jot,Vesna Samobor,Sini?a Sre?ec
Poljoprivreda (Osijek) , 2001,
Abstract: True-isogenic lines, differing only in the semi-dominant Rht3 dwarfing gene, were developed from the cross 'Tom Thumb x Bankuty 1201' during 17 years of continuous selection on heterozygous semidwarf plant. The effect of double (Rht3 Rht3 = full-dwarf), single (Rht3 rht3 =semi-dwarf), or no dwarfing gene (rht3 rht3 = tall) dosage on some plant, seed, and flour quality traits were observed in the isogenic lines during two years field experiment, planted by 'honey-comb design' at Kri`evci, Croatia. Significant main effect of Rht3 gene was in shortening of plant height by 54% and 28% in double and single gene dosage respectively. Full-dwarf genotype (Rht3 Rht3) had by 12% more heads/plant, but the other yield components as number of grains/head, and grain weight/head were lower by 25 and 28% respectively, resulting in significantly lower grain yield/plant (-27%). However, this also could be a secondary side effect of prolonged vegetation influenced by doubled Rht3 gene. There was no significant effect on flour protein content. Double gene effect was strong and significant for maximum dough viscosity measured by amylograph in BU (101%). In our environment full dwarf (Rht3 Rht3) has no agronomic value, but single gene dosage could be of commercial interest in hybrid wheat breeding.
Spectroscopic Temperature Determination of Degenerate Fermi Gases
Marijan Ko?trun,Robin C?té
Physics , 2003, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevA.68.063409
Abstract: We suggest a simple method for measuring the temperature of ultra-cold gases made of fermions. We show that by using a two-photon Raman probe, it is possible to obtain lineshapes which reveal properties of the degenerate sample, notably its temperature $T$. The proposed method could be used with identical fermions in different hyperfine states interacting via s-wave scattering or identical fermions in the same hyperfine state via p-wave scattering. We illustrate the applicability of the method in realistic conditions for $^6$Li prepared in two different hyperfine states. We find that temperatures down to 0.05 $T_{F}$ can be determined by this {\it in-situ} method.
Characteristics of urinary tract infections in elderly outpatients from Zagreb region
T. Marijan,A. Mlinari?-D?epina,J. Vrane?,V. Leskovar
Medicinski Glasnik , 2007,
Abstract: Urinary tract infections (UTI) are considered to be the most frequent human infections. Elderly people are especially prone to those infections. The aim of this study was to compare the characteristics of UTI in elderly patients with patients younger than 65, and to find any possible differences in incidence and etiology between those two groups. Between 1 January and 31 October 2005 at the Zagreb Institute of Public Health 22046 urine samples from City of Zagreb and Zagreb region outpatients were cultivated. A total of 6,310 samples was collected from elderly patients (≥65 years). In elderly populations with UTI, male to female ratio was 1:1.7, while in patients younger than 65 years the ratio was 1:5. The difference in the incidence of UTI according to age and gender was observed. In elderly population the urinary tract pathogens showed significantly higher resistance rates to fluoroquinolones (p<0.01), whereas in male patients higher resistance rates were found to beta-lactams, aminoglicosides and cotrimoxazole as compared to women irrespective of age (p<0.01). In elderly persons changes in health also affect the features of UTI. There is a constant need to monitor the epidemiology and resistance of urinary tract pathogens to assure an appropriate antimicrobial therapy.

Latin manuscript missal
Marijan Smolik
Knji?nica : Revija za Podro?je Bibliotekarstva in Informacijske Znanosti , 2003,
Abstract: The paper describes the origins and content of the latin manuscript missal marked Bergendal MS 40, which is part of the Bergendal Collection of manuscripts and incunables in Toronto. This manuscript had once been used as a missal by the priests in the Church of St. Daniel in Zalog. The author points to the fact that the analysed missal lacks the texts which are otherwise included in complete missals. On these grounds, he assumes that the buyers of the missal for the Slavina (today Postojna) parsonage did not buy the missal, which had been available, but had had only parts of it copied, the parts they presumed to be used and of use in the local church.

Za razvitak i djelovanje u skladu s europskim standardima javnog knji ni arstva, Grad Vara din, Vara dinska upan a i Ministarstvo kulture RH trebaju omogu iti gradnju zgrade Gradske knji nice.
