Translation of the Neck Disability Index and validation of the Greek version in a sample of neck pain patients

Abstract: The original version of the questionnaire was used. Based on international standards, the translation strategy comprised forward translations, reconciliation, backward translation and pre-testing steps. The validation procedure concerned the exploration of internal consistency (Cronbach alpha), test-retest reliability (Intraclass Correlation Coefficient, Bland and Altman method), construct validity (exploratory factor analysis) and responsiveness (Spearman correlation coefficient, Standard Error of Measurement and Minimal Detectable Change) of the questionnaire. Data quality was also assessed through completeness of data and floor/ceiling effects.The translation procedure resulted in the Greek modified version of the NDI. The latter was culturally adapted through the pre-testing phase. The validation procedure raised a large amount of missing data due to low applicability, which were assessed with two methods. Floor or ceiling effects were not observed. Cronbach alpha was calculated as 0.85, which was interpreted as good internal consistency. Intraclass correlation coefficient was found to be 0.93 (95% CI 0.84–0.97), which was considered as very good test-retest reliability. Factor analysis yielded one factor with Eigenvalue 4.48 explaining 44.77% of variance. The Spearman correlation coefficient (0.3; P = 0.02) revealed some relation between the change score in the NDI and Global Rating of Change (GROC). The SEM and MDC were calculated as 0.64 and 1.78 respectively.The Greek version of the NDI measures disability in patients with neck pain in a reliable, valid and responsive manner. Abstract: This paper aims to investigate the moral dilemmas that arise in two contemporary issues, those of Cloning and Genetic Engineering. Firstly, we examine some purely technical aspects of these two issues. Secondly, we attempt an analysis of the moral and social dimensions of Cloning and Genetic Engineering. We argue that total rejection of Cloning and Genetic Engineering is neither sound nor documented, and we conclude that there are significant benefits from these two technologies. Additionally, we propose a set of actions that will help modern societies to cope effectively with these challenges.
Monetary strategies from the perspective of intermediate objectives

Abstract: Central bank can apply different kinds of monetary strategies. This paper analyses monetary strategy from the perspective of intermediate objectives. Right strategy should help to fulfill targeted goals. However, it is not easy to choose right strategy in right moment under certain economic conditions. This paper summarizes basic principles, advantages, and disadvantages of four main strategies. Thus, it should simplify choice of the optimal one. Some practical aspects are explained through experience of several central banks and especially through example of the National Bank of Slovakia that applied gradually different strategies. These modifications were influenced by specific evolution of Slovak economy that has been typical for countries in transition. Thus, its experience can serve other countries that are in the beginning of transition process.

Abstract: according to the anthropological theory of the didactic (atd), the "work of the technique" is considered as a dimension of mathematical activity that plays a crucial role in the development and progressive completion of school mathematical practice. among its functions, we can highlight its capacity to connect the study process and to create new mathematical objects. however, these didactic functions have to be considered in relation to the other dimensions of mathematical activity and, more especially, to the exploration of new types of tasks and the constitution of an appropriate theoretical environment. this paper focuses on the school mathematical practice around "ruffini's rule", a technique for polynomial division and factoring. we will show a specific way of enlarging and progressively completing this rule, considering the "work of the technique" as an essential tool.
Modelling the combined effects of land use and climatic changes: coupling bioclimatic modelling with markov-chain cellular automata in a case study in Cyprus

Abstract: Two endemic plant species in the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, Crocus cyprius and Ophrys kotschyi, were used as a case study. We have coupled climate change scenarios, and land use change models with species distribution models. Future land use scenarios were modelled by initially calculating the rate of current land use changes between two time snapshots (2000 and 2006) on the island, and based on these transition probabilities markov-chain cellular automata were used to generate future land use changes for 2050. Climate change scenarios A1B, A2, B1 and B2A were derived from the IPCC reports. Species climatic preferences were derived from their current distributions using classification trees while habitats preferences were derived from the Red Data Book of the Flora of Cyprus. A bioclimatic model for Crocus cyprius was built using mean temperature of wettest quarter, max temperature of warmest month and precipitation seasonality, while for Ophrys kotchyi the bioclimatic model was built using precipitation of wettest month, mean temperature of warmest quarter, isothermality, precipitation of coldest quarter, and annual precipitation. Sequentially, simulation scenarios were performed regarding future species distributions by accounting climate alone and both climate and land use changes. The distribution of the two species resulting from the bioclimatic models was then filtered by future land use changes, providing the species projected potential distribution. The species projected potential distribution varies depending on the type and scenario used, but many of both species current sites/locations are projected to be outside their future potential distribution. Our results demonstrate the importance of including both land use and climatic changes in predictive species modeling.

Abstract: Methylene blue (MB), a tricyclic phenothiazine drug, has been reported to enhance mitochondrial functions including mitochondrial respiration. By comparison, stress associated with abrupt ethanol withdrawal (EW) impedes mitochondrial functions. We investigated whether MB protects mitochondrial respiration and cell survival from EW stress through a key mitochondrial enzyme, cytochrome c oxidase (COX). We also investigated whether the MB’s protection involves the inhibition of an excitatory neurotransmitter, glutamate. Male rats were exposed to and withdrawn from ethanol-diet (7.5%, 5 weeks). MB (0.5 mg/kg, intraperitoneal) was injected for the last 5 days of ethanol-diet and on the first day of EW. Cerebellum was then harvested to measure mitochondrial respiration and COX expression using real-time XF respirometer and immunohistochemistry, respectively. Separately, HT22 cells (a murine hippocampal cell line) were exposed to and abruptly withdrawn for 4 hours from chronic ethanol (100 mM, 3 days). MB was administered during EW with or without a COX inhibitor (NaN3) or glutamate. Mitochondrial respiration, COX content, and cell viability were then assessed using real-time XF respirometer, an immunoblot method, and Calcein assay, respectively. MB attenuated the suppressing effects of EW on mitochondrial respiration, COX content, and cell survival. This protection was reduced after NaN3 or glutamate cotreatment. These results suggest that MB treatment help maintain mitochondrial respiratory and cellular integrity through COX-upregulation and glutamateinhibition upon EW stress. MB treatment may help identify mitochondrial mechanisms underlying hyperexcitatory CNS disorders.
Purkinje-neuron-specific down-regulation of p38 protects motoric function from the repeated use of benzodiazepine  [PDF]

Benzodiazepine (BZD) is the most prescribed CNS depressant in America to treat hyper-excitatory disorders such as anxiety and insomnia. However, the chronic use of BZD often creates adverse effects including psychomotor deficit. In this study, we investigated a novel mechanism by which chronic BZD impedes motoric function in female mice. We used female mice because BZD use is much more prevalent in female than male populations. We tested the hypothesis that the accumulation of p38 (stress-activated protein) in cerebellar Purkinje neurons mediates motoric deficit induced by chronic BZD. To test this hypothesis, we generated transgenic mice that lack p38 incerebellar Purkinje neurons by crossing Pcp2 (Purkinje cell protein 2)-Cre mice with p38loxP/loxP mice. p38-knockdown mice and wild-type mice received BZD (lorazepam, 0.5 mg/kg) for 14 days. During this period, they were tested for motoric performance using Rotarod assay in which a quicker fall from rotating rod indicates poorer motoric performance. Cerebellum was then collected to detect p38 inPurkinje neurons and to measure mitochondrial respiration using immunohistochemistry and real-time XF respirometry, respectively. Compared to vehicletreated mice, BZD-treated mice showed poorer motoric performance, a higher number of Purkinje neurons containing p38, and lower mitochondrial respiration. These effects of BZD were much smaller in p38-knockdown mice. These results suggest that the excessive accumulation of p38 incerebellar Purkinje neurons contributes to motoric deficit associated with chronic BZD. They also suggest that Purkinje neuronal p38 mediates BZD-induced mitochondrial respiratory inhibition in cerebellum. Our findings may provide a new mechanistic insight into chronic BZD-induced motoric deficit.

Changes of plasma lipids in relation to the regular consumption of bilberries (Vaccinium myrtillus L.)

Abstract: In this work we studied the impact of regular consumption of bilberries on the lipid profile and triglycerides in the blood plasma. The research involved 18 women (average age 49.7) and 7 men (average age 52.8), who consumed 150 g of bilberries three times a week for 6 weeks. Based on these results, we can conclude that the average total cholesterol levels of women decreased from 5.65 mmol.l-1 at the beginning of research to 5.11 mmol.l-1. At end of the study, the average total cholesterol was 5.47 mmol.l-1. Similar results were found in the LDL cholesterol - the level of cholesterol of the second blood collection dropped from 4.06 mmol.l-1 to 3.70 mmol.l-1 and at the end of the study it increased again to 4.00 mmol.l-1. We observed a slight increase in HDL choleserol (by 0.07 mmol.l-1) and reduction of triglycerides (by 0.16 mmol.l-1). The total cholesterol monitored men due to the regular consumption of bilberries decreased by 0.36 mmol.l-1, LDL cholesterol by 0.31 mmol.l-1, HDL cholesterol by 0.49 mmol.l-1 and triglycerides by 0,49 mmol.l-1. The improvement of triglycerides and lipid profile in blood plasma of monitored subjects can by evaluated positively. The observed data confirm the biological activity of bilberries and the effectiveness of their use in prevention and comprehensive treatment of cardiovascular diseases. doi:10.5219/233

Abstract: We study, in this paper, a generalized viscoelastic equation which includes several interesting models considered in some recent papers. Many physically important nonlinear PDEs can be reduced to nonlinear ODEs by means of reduction techniques. So it is significant and very interesting to study, among all the closed-form solutions admitted by the model, the corresponding kink waves. A plot of the obtained solution is performed.

Abstract: Expander graphs are widely used in communication problems and construction of error correcting codes. In such graphs, information gets through very quickly. Typically, it is not true for social or biological networks, though we may find a partition of the vertices such that the induced subgraphs on them and the bipartite subgraphs between any pair of them exhibit regular behavior of information flow within or between the vertex subsets. Implications between spectral and regularity properties are discussed.
