Brait, Carlos Henrique Hoff;Antoniosi Filho, Nelson Roberto;Furtado, Mariana Malzoni;
Química Nova , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-40422009000600004
Abstract: this study investigates the use of wild animal hair of c. brachyurus, c. thous and l. pardalis as biomonitors of trace metal at parque nacional das emas, brazil. results reveal a strong correlation between cd and pb as well as cu and zn, which suggests a single source of emission. most metals showed a lower or equal concentration than those obtained in previous studies. the research shows that monitoring may be performed only with zn, pb, cd, and cr because of statistical similarity and of a non-natural occurrence of large amounts of the material under analysis.
Brait, Beth;
Trabalho, Educa??o e Saúde , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1981-77462004000100003
Abstract: the text uses as a starting point a discussion on the contribution made by the bakhtinian thought to the human sciences, in particular with regard to discourse, activity, subject and history. in the light of this universe, the essay analyses the intersection between otherness, identity and consumption as a result of a discursive work that is characteristic of our times.
Le texte montre la langue, articule et disloque les discours How the text discloses language, and both articulates and takes apart discourses

This paper analyzes a language structure which, transferred to a different sphere, a different discursive practice, and a different culture, leads to differing discourses which, in turn, point to the Portuguese language assets and to its discursive productivity in different contexts. Our work is supported by the concepts of sphere and dialogical relations, both discussed in Bakhtinian terms, and takes into account the fact that language studies practiced by several trends of Discourse Analysis may boil down to the attempt to understand, by means of historical, social and cultural dimensions, the production of meaning. This paper mainly aims to study the verses of a Brazilian contemporary song in which the verb vir (“to come”) is used in its pronominal form vir-se (“to come” + pron.). Scrutinizing the use of this form – which is totally foreign to Brazilian speakers of Portuguese – within the Brazilian artistic realm, one is lead to recognize the forms of language in use as part of the object targeted by analyses and by theories of discourse.
Jean Peytard, dialogisme et analyse du discours
Beth Brait
Synergies Monde , 2013,

A Palavra mandioca do verbal ao verbo-visual / The Word Manioc from Verbal to Verbal Visual Language
Beth Brait
Bakhtiniana: Revista de Estudos do Discurso , 2009,
Abstract: RESUMO: Este trabalho apresenta algumas contribui es de Bakhtin e do Círculo para a defini o e leitura do verbo-visual, situando-as no conceito de palavra. ABSTRACT:This work presents some of Bakhtin and the Circle’s contributions tothe definition and reading of the verbal visual language, placing these contributions on the concept of the word. For this purpose, the word manioc was chosen, recovered in three moments: the transition from oral to writing in Couto de Magalh es’ text, dated of 1876; the text’s French version published in France in 1923; and in a contemporary recipe book first released in 2005 and with a second edition in 2006.
Polifonia arquitetada pela cita o visual e verbo-visual / Polyphony orchestrated by visual and verbal-visual quotation
Beth Brait
ABSTRACT: This paper aims at relating polyphony with other concepts conceived by Bakhtin and the Circle so as to marshal them in the inter-textual and inter-discursive readings of three cultural productions that thematize the hero in Macunaíma, a milestone of Brazilian cultural, linguistic and discursive identity. Engaged in dialogue by means of a metonymy – the episode entitled “A pacuera do Oibê”-, these works exhibit discursive and cultural polyphony and allow for a re-dimension of the concept of citation/reported speech as quotational architecture.

Abstract: The human cysteine dioxygenase 1 (CDO1) gene is a non-heme structured, iron-containing metalloenzyme involved in the conversion of cysteine to cysteine sulfinate, and plays a key role in taurine biosynthesis. In our search for novel methylated gene promoters, we have analyzed differential RNA expression profiles of colorectal cancer (CRC) cell lines with or without treatment of 5-aza-2′-deoxycytidine. Among the genes identified, the CDO1 promoter was found to be differentially methylated in primary CRC tissues with high frequency compared to normal colon tissues. In addition, a statistically significant difference in the frequency of CDO1 promoter methylation was observed between primary normal and tumor tissues derived from breast, esophagus, lung, bladder and stomach. Downregulation of CDO1 mRNA and protein levels were observed in cancer cell lines and tumors derived from these tissue types. Expression of CDO1 was tightly controlled by promoter methylation, suggesting that promoter methylation and silencing of CDO1 may be a common event in human carcinogenesis. Moreover, forced expression of full-length CDO1 in human cancer cells markedly decreased the tumor cell growth in an in vitro cell culture and/or an in vivo mouse model, whereas knockdown of CDO1 increased cell growth in culture. Our data implicate CDO1 as a novel tumor suppressor gene and a potentially valuable molecular marker for human cancer.
Brait, Beth;Machado, Irene;
Bakhtiniana: Revista de Estudos do Discurso , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S2176-45732011000200003
Abstract: the main purpose of this paper is to discuss the importance of f. dostoevsky's novel notes from the underground to m.m. bakhtin's problems of dostoevsky's poetics. we hope to understand not only the artistic devices highlighted in the novel but also the consequences to the conception of polyphony and the polyphonic novel genre, and to other important concepts whose resonance goes beyond the study of the literary discourse, reaching language studies in general. this is the case of the evasiveness in speech with which the underground man interacts while fighting against all the discourses which would have the last word on him.
