Agricultural Sciences (AS) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/as.2013.411A004
Abstract:

This study evaluated the nutrient content of the litter, testing different treatments with burning and no burning, of the vegetation, to identify which one provides better efficiency in operation and production of nutrients in different seasonal conditions. The study area is located on the property of the family farmer, initially selected by a diagnosis socioeconomic, community Benjamin Constant, in northeastern Para. Litter was collected during two periods: dry season (November) and rainy (March) in 2009. For the collection of litter samples, we used collectors measuring (0.25 × 0.25 m2), which were placed directly on the soil surface. The collected material was stored in paper bags and taken to the laboratory for Chemical Analysis of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA), which was determined by analyses of macronutrients (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Na) and micronutrients (Fe, Cu, Mn, Zn). The highest concentrations of macronutrients were found in N for agroforestry systems with and without burning in two seasons (wet and dry). All macronutrients showed influence of seasonality, which was verified by the wide variation in nutritional behavior. The decreasing concentration of nutrients was presented N > Ca > Mg > Na > K > P in agroforestry system with burning, with maximum values of all nutrients in the rainy season, and N, P, K, Ca, Na in higher concentrations in agroforestry system without burning, and showed only the Mg peak in agroforestry system with burning. The behavior of the concentration of nutrients was opposite to that observed one, for all elements analyzed showed a reduction in the concentrations of nutrients in the dry season. The decreasing concentration of nutrients was presented Fe > Mn > Zn > Cu.

Abstract: the leukaemogenic effect of chemotherapeutic agents after treatment for other malignancies have been well described. myelodysplastic syndrome secondary to chemo- and radiotherapy (mds-t) usually develops four to seven years after the initial exposure to chemotherapy frequently involving young patients, shows a high incidence of transformation to aml, is associated with severe cytopenias, trilineage dysplasia, reduced marrow cellularity and fibrosis, and presents an incidence of chromosomal abnormalities of up to 80% of the cases. the most common abnormalities are related to chromosomes 5 and 7. alkylating agents have been considered the most common drugs associated with mds-t. high dose chemotherapy used as part of the conditioning regimen prior to bone marrow transplantation as well as traditional regimens such as copp/abv and beacopp have also been associated with mds-t. recently, drugs such as azathioprine, rituximab and cladribine have been reported as causes too. due to the increasing survival of patients suffering from other malignancies, mds-t results as a mutagenic effect of these therapies and is related to poor prognosis.

Abstract: sediments carried away by the muddy waters of the guamá river and the heterogeneity of these substances are responsible for the soil formation and diversity of chemical characteristics in the periodically flooded areas. this study aimed at determining the physical and chemical attributes of a low floodplain (varzea) soil of the guamá river, in different periods, cultivated with paramaribo canarana (echinochloa polystachya h.b.k) or canarana erecta lisa (echinochloa pyramidales lam). the experimental design was entirely randomized, in a 4 x 4 factorial scheme (4 depths and 4 sampling periods) with 6 replications. composite soil samples were collected at six equidistant points from a transection, at depths of 0-10, 10-20, 20-30, and 30-40 cm in may, august and november/2002 and february/2003. soil texture, organic matter, ph in h2o, ph in kcl, extractable p, exchangeable k, al, ca, and mg and the micronutrients cu, mn, zn, and fe were determined. the soil of the area under study is classified as gleysol, i.e., little developement, poorly drained, normally acid, with a silt- clay-loam horizon. the soil chemistry composition was affected by seasonality. during the rainy season and when the most intense flooding occurred in the floodplain, in february, the ph, cu and soluble iron concentrations increased and mg and exchangeable aluminum decreased. during lower soil humidity periods base saturation and ctc were higher. iron was the nutrient that showed the greatest variation in the flooded soil; the increases exceeded 1000 % during the period of more pronounced flooding (february).

Abstract: fungal infections caused by candida species have increased in incidence during the past two decades in england, north america and europe. candidal arthritis is rare in patients who are not intravenous drug users or are who not using a prostheses. we report the case of a 24-year-old man with acute lymphoid leukemia, who developed candida tropicalis arthritis during an aplastic period after chemotherapy. this is the eighth case described in the literature of c. tropicalis causing arthritis without intra-articular inoculation. we call attention to an unusual first sign of fungal infection: septic arthritis without intra-articular inoculation. however, this case differs from the other seven, since despite therapy a fast and lethal evolution was observed. we reviewed reported cases, incidence, risk factors, mortality and treatment of neutropenic patients with fungal infections.

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To study atheromas, Mycoplasma pneumoniae (M. pneumoniae), and Chlamydia pneumoniae (C. pneumoniae). METHODS: C. pneumoniae was studied with immunohistochemistry and M. pneumoniae with in situ hybridization (ISH), in segments of coronary arteries (SCA) as follows: group A - thrombosed ruptured plaques (TRP) of 23 patients who died due to acute myocardial infarction (AMI); group B - 23 nonruptured plaques (NRP) of group A patients; group C - NRP of 11 coronary patients who did not die due to AMI; and group D - 11 SCA from patients with dilated cardiomyopathy or Chagas' disease without atherosclerosis. RESULTS: The mean number of C. pneumoniae+ cells/400x in groups A, B, C, and D was, respectively, 3.3±3.6; 1.0±1.3; 1.2±2.4; and 0.4±0.3; and the percentage of M. pneumoniae area was, respectively, 3.9±3.5; 1.5± 1.6; 0.9±0.9; and 0.4±0.2. More M. pneumoniae and C. pneumoniae were found in of group A than in group B (P<0.01). Good correlation was seen between the area of the vessel and the M. pneumoniae area in the plaque (r = 0.46; P=0.001) and between C. pneumoniae+ cells and CD4+ T lymphocytes (r = 0.42; P<0.01). The number of C. pneumoniae+ cells correlated with CD20+ B cells (r=0.48; P<0.01). CONCLUSION: M. pneumoniae and C. pneumoniae are more frequently found in TRP correlate with the intensity of the inflammation and diameter of the vessel (positive remodeling).

Abstract: The effect of the use of the soil on the fertility has been studied, in Gleyssoil under three different management systems. Collections had been made before the rainy period in the following handling systems: rice (Oriza sativa L.) plantation area, cultivated for approximately 40 years, with some interruptions in during this period. Some times the culture was mechanized, with use of plowshare and harrow; pasture area with plantation of canarana (Echinochloa pyramidalis Hitch.), cultivated for 20 years, without the use of fertilizers; and lowland area with natural vegetation. The samples of soil were collected in ten points, set by using the transect methodology, to four depths 0-10, 10-20, 20-30 and 30-40 cm in each point. The results demonstrate that the soil under natural conditions, presented chemical characteristics which insure to the soil a high potential for the agricultural use. The agricultural culture of the lowland soil in the Guamá River provoked a reduction in the concentration of P and K. The soil usage system with pasture presented better sustainability on it fertility than the system with rice cultivation, beyond the improvement of the chemical characteristics and raise in the organic matter concentration, when related to the natural vegetation system.

Abstract: with the aim of evaluating the results obtained in a new experiment in internato rural (rural internship) during its first three years of existence, 22 reports, which had been submitted by 46 student-trainees who participated in this program, were analyzed. internato rural involves the transfer of the student from the college campus to a rural community where he stays for a certain period of time. this internato rural course program differs from the structure proposed by other universities mainly in that it aims at stimulating the community to identify its problems and to organize itself to solve them. it was observed, at the end of the above mentioned period, that the objectives proposed had not been satisfactorily met. the difficulty in stimulating the community members to identify their own problems and to take the necessary steps to try to solve them was the fundamental obstacle faced. additional problems were posed by lack of resources to keep the students in the field and program discontinuity, basically due to school vacations and to the limited number of students enrolled in the internato rural program, which is elective. it has been realized, however, that as a form of professional practice in the field of public health and as an opportunity of experiencing everyday life in a rural community internato rural is of fundamental importance for the students. it was concluded that this constitutes a worthwhile experience in accordance with the new proposal which will have to be an improvement so as to meet the initial objectives, and which may also contribute to other graduate programs in nutrition in the country.
