Online Brazilian Journal of Nursing , 2008,
Abstract: In seeking to build new knowledge so as to transform patient service practices performed in the field of mental health, as laid down in the Psychiatric Reform guidelines, this study has set out to gather statements from professionals and residents of half-way houses providing therapy in order to understand what similarities and differences there are between them on various accommodation and care issues arising in this service. This is a qualitative research study, which collected data by means of systematic observation, a field log and semi-structured interviews, conducted with 10 professionals and 07 residents of the Servi o de Residências Terapêuticas (Half-way House Service) of the municipality of Campina Grande, Paraiba. The result was that the statements indicate that these community residences provide a quality service, which reflects a tendency towards humanization, and one which is offered in an intermediate space in which citizenship can be achieved by those being discharged from asylums. As to the activities of the professionals, the study observes that the work process has provided the team with a means to manage care in a way that is substantially different from the technician approach which occurs in hospitals. As to those suffering from mental disorders, they start to regain ownership of a space from which they have long been estranged, that is to say, their homes, how to live at home, and how to live in a city. They have surprised everyone by their ability to (re-)adapt to and (re-)gain the urban space.

Abstract: a systematic review of scientific production on prison health was conducted, seeking to verify how the subject matter has been dealt with, establishing which is the most exploited focus and identifying possible gaps. the search was carried out in the virtual health library. 1160 articles were located: 1104 on medline, 19 on lilacs and 37 on scielo, published from 1993 to 2010. as medline and lilacs do not show the entire articles, the places, dates and languages of the texts were charted. in-depth analysis was restricted to works which were shown in their entirety and free of charge hosted on scielo. it revealed that scientific production is present all over the world with a predominantly quantitative approach. it focuses on identifying the socio-demographic profile and health conditions of prisoners, the incidence of tuberculosis, human immunodeficiency and hepatitis c virus infections. there is a predominance of studies carried out with male prisoners, in comparison with the female sex. it is clear that prisoner health is a public health problem on the rise, which demands research that can orient health policies and strategies.

Online Brazilian Journal of Nursing , 2009,
Abstract: With a view to identifying new knowledge on nursing care that will give additional support to nurses, this qualitative study sets out how final year nursing students conceive of the meaning and value of touch as a therapeutic instrument. Data was gathered from workshops on awareness-raising, expressiveness and creativity; through participative observation; and from field diary records. 13 final year nursing students at the State University of Paraíba, Campina Grande-PB took part. The findings, based on statements taken, emphasize touch as a fundamental strategy for humanization, which makes it viable to have an empathic relationship between client and professional. Professionals must display the sensitivity needed to use touch appropriately and at appropriate times. Therefore, the act of touch needs to be understood beyond its physical aspect, because this involves subjective factors, both by those who do the touching and those being touched. The workshops were successful in reawakening a sense of humanization, which had apparently lain dormant amongst group participants. They now regard touch as a means to establish a relationship of exchange, reward and respect between nurse and client, which is indispensable in the caregiver’s daily routine.
