A (AD)MISS O DO INTELECTUAL: LITERATURA E PODER NO BRASIL
Maria Tereza Carneiro Lemos
Fólio : Revista de Letras , 2010,
Abstract: This essay will discuss the implicit relations of power within the cultural production in the urban periphery of contemporary Brazil, with special focus on the marginal literature. In that sense, the role of the intellectual writer;the language itself and the political quality role of literature in building citizenship are analysed.
Evaluation by ICP-MS of Essential, Nonessential and Toxic Elements in Brazilian Fish and Seafood Samples  [PDF]
Denise Grotto, Bruno Lemos Batista, Maria Fernanda Hornos Carneiro, Fernando Barbosa Jr.
Food and Nutrition Sciences (FNS) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/fns.2012.39165
Abstract: Fish is considered one of the healthiest foods due to the high levels of several important cardioprotective compounds such as long chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E. However, due to widespread environmental pollution, high levels of contaminants may also be present in fish and seafood samples, which may counteract the beneficial effects of consumption of this food. With this in mind, the aims of this study were: 1) to examine both toxic and essential chemical elements in seafood and river and sea fish samples sold in different Brazilian regions by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS); 2) to estimate the daily intake of these chemical elements by Brazilians. The toxic elements Ba, Cd, Pb, Sr, V and Sb were found in higher concentrations in seafood than in either sea or river fish, while As concentrations were higher in both seafood and sea fish than in river fish. On the other hand, Hg levels were higher in river and sea fish. Concentrations of the essential chemical elements Co, Mn, Cu, Fe, Mg, Zn and Mo were significantly higher in seafood compared with both sorts of fish except for Se, whose levels were similar in seafood and sea fish. Daily intake of all chemical elements was estimated on the basis of a calculation of the amount of fish consumed by Brazilian households (mean fish and seafood consumption of 11.0 g/person/day). The amount of toxic element in fish and seafood did not represent a risk for the Brazilian people. Moreover, fish and seafood seem to be a good source of selenium.

Abstract: many authors recognize the difficulties in evaluating and analysing the repercussions of the activities in environmental education, due to the various existing assesment processes, the comprehending character of the themes and objectives. if we use more quantitative assessment processes, requiring objetive responses, we may abdicate of elements that best characterize the environmental education. therefore, we need adequate evaluation instruments. in this paper, we intend to point out the educational processes in environmental education, and the discussions about the assesment criteria for projects according to various specialists' views
Contextualized Analysis of Social Networks: Collaboration in Scientific Communities  [PDF]

Social Networking (SN) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/sn.2014.32009
Abstract:

Currently, the collaboration in scientific communities has been studied in order to explain, among other things, the knowledge diffusion. The quality of Graduate Programmes is often associated with the scientific collaboration. This paper discusses how scientific collaboration processes can be identified and characterized through social and complex networks. For this purpose, collaboration networks of bibliographic production, research projects, and committees of PhD theses and Masters’ dissertations by researchers from a graduate program in computational modeling were studied. The data were obtained from CAPES’ reports of the period from 2001 to 2009. Among the studied indices, centrality indices indicate the presence of prominent researchers who influence others and promptly interact with other researchers in the network. The indices of complex networks reveal the presence of the small-world (i.e. these networks are favorable to increase coordination between researchers) phenomenon and indicate a behavior of scale-free degree distribution (i.e. some researchers promote clustering more than others) for one of the studied networks.

Study of foramen openings and their concurrence with root apexes

RSBO , 2005,
Abstract: The present study is aimed at evaluating the anatomic concurrencebetween foramen openings and root apexes of 247 upper and lowerpermanent human molar canals, the distance between these structures, the instrument that best fits into the root canal, as well as the direction of foramen deviation. Sixty-four of the canals were partially impenetrable and were discarded. The findings showed that 39.9% of the root canals studied had their apical foramen concurrent with their root apexes and 60.1% did not. Clinicians must be made aware of this important anatomical detail, which could be indispensable for successful endodontic treatment.

Abstract: inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (icp-ms) has been used for the determination of twenty minor and trace elements in hair samples from an urban population group (n = 1775), aiming at the establishment of reliable hair reference intervals. statistical evaluation of the data with respect to age, sex and anatomic region was performed by multivariant analysis and according to recommendations of the international federation of clinical chemistry (ifcc). the results show that mainly age and anatomic region (scalp or pubis) influence significantly the concentration of several elements. comparison of the here calculated reference intervals with those previously published and used by clinical laboratories for this population showed larger discrepancies and the need for an urgent revision of these data.

Abstract: Lectin Cramoll-1,4, obtained from Cratylia mollis seeds (beans camaratu) was structurally characterized, biologically and pharmacologically, but its use as a biopharmaceutical is not well documented. The objective of this study is to propose a biopharmaceutical formulation lectin Cramoll-1,4, test their hemagglutinating properties in vitro as well as the use of gamma radiation as a continuous process of decontamination formulation. It was made of the extraction and purification Cramoll-1,4, was developed a gel formulation using Carbopol? as a vehicle, at concentrations of 50, 100, 200, 300 and 600 μg was irradiated with 60Co gamma rays in a dose of 7.549 kGy·h–1. The proposed formulation at a concentration of 300 μg produced an increase in the hemagglutinating units Cramoll-1,4 due to the synergistic effect caused by gamma radiation. Considering the diverse use of lectins, specific molecular and structural factors, as well as changes resulting from its formulation, concentration, irradiation and route of administration is of utmost importance to continue the studies in vitro, for subsequent application in vivo to characterize the physiological and molecular processes involved in the response and cellular effects.

Abstract: objective: to determine the prevalence of allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (abpa) in patients with cystic fibrosis treated at a referral center in the state of bahia, brazil. methods: a cross-sectional study, with prospective data collection, carried out at the cystic fibrosis referral center of bahia of the octavio mangabeira specialized hospital. we evaluated 74 patients diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, older than six years of age, treated between december 9, 2003 and march 7, 2005. we analyzed the following variables: gender, age, forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume in one second, pharmacodynamic response, chest x-ray findings, facial sinus x-ray findings, wheezing, cultures for aspergillus spp., total immunoglobulin e (ige), specific ige for aspergillus fumigatus and immediate skin test reactivity to a.fumigatus antigen. results: of the 74 patients, 2 were diagnosed with abpa. we found total ige levels > 1,000 iu/ml in 17 (23%), positive immediate skin reactivity to a. fumigatus antigen in 19 (25.7%) and wheezing in 60 (81.1%). conclusions: the prevalence of abpa was 2.7%. the high levels of total ige, high incidence of wheezing and high rate of immediate skin test reactivity to a. fumigatus antigen suggest that these patients should be carefully monitored due to their propensity to develop abpa.
