Abstract: A case about a HIV woman with nasal ulcers is described in this paper. In every inmunodepressed patient who has mu-cosal or cutaneous ulcers, infection by leishmanial parasites needs to be ruled out, especially when ulcers have not re-gression with usual treatments. The Leishmanial nasal disease usually shows swelling and mucosal ulcers, that may progress to necrosis. Delaying in appropriate therapy might cause irreversible damage.

Abstract: metformin is an oral biguanide widely used in the management of patients with type 2 diabetes. it produces non-specific gastrointestinal symptoms in 10-30% of the patients. lactic acidosis is the most serious side effect, so it must not be administered to patients with renal, liver, or heart insufficiency. only a few cases of hepatotoxicity due to this drug have been documented. we report the case of a patient with type 2 diabetes mellitus and recent use of metformin who developed serious liver injury, followed by a favorable evolution.

Abstract: background. to evaluate the diagnostic and therapeutic management of patients with nephritic colic in a referral hospital, their monitoring and the incidence of alternative diagnoses. methods. this is a retrospective review of 182 randomly selected patients who presented a clinical diagnosis compatible with nephritic colic in a referral hospital. in these cases initial treatment, monitoring and alternative diagnoses have been evaluated. results. fifty-five point four percent of the patients were male, the mean age was 47.7 years and 40% of the cases were in spring. urinalysis was carried out in every patient (62.7% dipstick and 72% urinary sediment); they were pathological in over 70%. in 26.4% of cases renal function deteriorated, always transiently. abdominal radiography (81.9%) was the most frequently diagnostic test performed, followed by ultrasound (25.8%). treatment included a serum therapy in 31.3%; metamizol (61%) was the most commonly used analgesic followed by ketorolac (44.5%). more than one non-steroidal anti-inflammatory was used by 46.2%. hospital admission was required by 24 patients, and 5 of them needed emergency surgery. twenty-four point one percent of patients had relapses during the next six months. forty-one point six percent were referred to urology discharge on from the emergency room. eighteen point one percent of patients had alternative diagnoses; acute pyelonephritis was the most frequent of these (55%). conclusions. in our work we found a significant variation in the diagnostic and therapeutic management of these patients. the use of clinical guidelines could help us to unify the management of patients with nephritic colic, both in the emergency room and on discharge. due to the high prevalence of alternative diagnoses, we have to systematically exclude more serious diseases.
An Evaluation of Life Satisfaction within the Migratory Experience According to Psychosocial Variables  [PDF]
Macarena Vallejo Martín, Maria del Pilar Moreno-Jiménez
Psychology (PSYCH) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/psych.2012.312A185
Abstract:

This study attempts to discover which psychosocial variables effect whether a displaced person evaluates their migratory experience and their life in the new context as positive. The psychosocial variables studied are: social support, individual self-esteem, social identity, analysis of endogroup and exogroup, assimilation of host culture, and perception of the assessment of the host culture and level of retention of the original culture. The general objective is to discover to what degree these variables predict the level of life satisfaction in thenew cityof residence. Following an analysis of the data, we find that social support predicts satisfaction in 23.3%. Furthermore, in order to generalise these findings across the overall immigrant population, resident in Spain, a comparison of three Spanish cities is carried out: Barcelona, Madrid and Málaga. The results show that although an identical pattern cannot be applied to all three cities, but in conclusion we can say that the variables with greater success in predicting life satisfaction are: social support, assimilation and assessment of host culture and self-esteem.

Maximising Incidental Vocabulary Acquisition in Spanish as a Foreign Language  [PDF]
Maria Pilar Agustín-Llach
Open Journal of Modern Linguistics (OJML) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/ojml.2015.53023
Abstract: This paper presents a study designed to contribute some evidence for incidental vocabulary acquisition in the foreign language. Finding the most effective approach to vocabulary learning and teaching has occupied researchers intensively. This is a small scale study in which the lexical learning of 52 Italian learners of Spanish as a foreign language is tested. Learners are submitted to three conditions with different requirements (output vs. input, multiple exposures vs. target word usage, meaning comparison and selection vs. message production), but in all three, vocabulary is learned in an incidental way and with a lexical learning condition present in the task. Results point to lack of statistical differences in lexical gains among the three interventions. From this finding, it might be assumed that it is not the nature of the manipulation, input or output, multiple exposures, or target word usage, but complying with any condition for lexical learning that plays a determining role in lexical acquisition.
Estudio comparativo de la satisfacción laboral en el personal de administración
Alonso Martín,Pilar;
Revista de Psicología del Trabajo y de las Organizaciones , 2008, DOI: 10.4321/S1576-59622008000100002
Abstract: in line with herzberg?s model (herzberg, 1959) this paper raises the question of the existence of differences in the perception of work satisfaction. it is a descriptive cross sectional study made with a sample of 80 public servants belonging to the administration and services in a public university. the work satisfaction questionnaire (warr, cokk and wall, 1979) was used as the measurement tool. results show that females, older people, more senior employees and temporary workers had a higher level of work satisfaction. it is concluded that it is external factors, such as leader-subordinate exchange what lowers satisfaction regardless of other variables. specific actions should be taken in order to improve vertical communication.
Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Dendrons Bearing Amino-Nitro-Substituted Azobenzene Units and Oligo(ethylene glycol) Spacers: Thermal, Optical Properties, Langmuir Blodgett Films and Liquid-Crystalline Behaviour
Jesús Ortíz-Palacios,Efraín Rodríguez-Alba,Mayra Avelar,Ana Martínez,Maria del Pilar Carreón-Castro,Ernesto Rivera
Molecules , 2013, DOI: 10.3390/molecules18021502
Abstract: In this work, we report the synthesis and characterization of a novel series of first and second generation Fréchet type dendrons bearing amino-nitro substituted azobenzene units and tetra(ethylene glycol) spacers. These compounds were fully characterized by FTIR, 1H and 13C-NMR spectroscopies, and their molecular weights were determined by MALDI-TOF-MS. The thermal properties of the obtained dendrons were studied by TGA and DSC and their optical properties by absorption spectroscopy in solution and cast film. Molecular calculations were performed in order to determine the optimized geometries of these molecules in different environments. Besides, Langmuir and Langmuir Blodgett films were prepared with the first generation dendrons that were shown to be amphiphilic. Finally, some of the dendrons showed a liquid crystalline behaviour, which was studied by light polarized microscopy as a function of the temperature in order to determine the transition temperatures and the structure of the mesophase.
La importancia y el nivel de desarrollo de las competencias en psicología
Alonso-Martín,Pilar;
Psicología desde el Caribe , 2010,
Abstract: the objective of this investigation is to analyze the importance and the development level attributed to generic competences, also to observe in what didactic spaces have these been acquired and/or developed, as well as knowing the organization and the planning of the time of autonomous work. the sample is composed by 83 psychology students of 3rd, 4th and 5th semester. the results show that the level of importance of the competences is above the level of development reached; the didactic spaces where they have acquired most of the competences are the theoretical classes and the practical activities. the biggest percentage of their time is dedicated to work in groups and to prepare for exams. there have been significant differences in terms of gender, schedule and course. suggestions to improve quality of education are made.
