Abstract: there are differences in the generation of nursing and midwifery professions that are in the history of professional practice and teaching. the social representation theory is useful as a framework to study the way obstetrics was inserted in nursing, to understand why teaching was united and to make explicit the reflexion on these transformations to the professional practice. a preliminar analysis points out that the consolidation of the social representation of the obstetric nurse has been done with difficulties, as in nursing context, the reified and the consensual universes of thinking related to this question rarely are convergent.

Abstract: this paper presents the historical transformation of midwifery and nurse-midwifery education in brazil from the 19th century until recent experiencies of training nurse-midwives as a graduate course in obstetrical nursing. it discusses the education models of these professionals in other countries and presents a proposal for midwifery education integrated into nursing schools.

Abstract: Refere-se às transforma es na forma o profissional de parteiras, obstetrizes e enfermeiras obstétricas no Brasil, desde a cria o dos cursos de parteiras vinculados às escolas médicas, no século XIX, até as mais recentes experiências, mediante cursos de especializa o em enfermagem obstétrica. Discute os modelos de forma o dos profissionais que existem em outros países, considerando tanto o ensino independente da obstetrícia como a modalidade vinculada aos cursos de enfermagem. Apresenta proposta de um curso de obstetrícia para ser oferecido por escolas de enfermagem.

Abstract: many studies have been undertaken with the purpose of contributing towards the prevention of perineal trauma in normal birth. the objective of this study was to relate height of the perineum, duration of the second stage of labor, variation of the position of the head detaching, kind of effort, presence of the umbilical cord around the babies' neck, birth weight and vulva's ardor to urinate with the occurrence of perineal laceration. the study was undertaken in 2003 at the normal birth center of the amparo maternal, with a sample consisting of 67 women in labor without previous vaginal births. the results demonstrated that there were no significant statistical differences between the variables verified.

Abstract: El objetivo fue comprender las transformaciones en el modelo de atención al parto desde la experiencia de mujeres que dieron a luz en el Estado de S o Paulo en las décadas de 1940 a 1980. Estudio descriptivo, según la Historia Oral Temática, con 20 mujeres. Los datos fueron recolectados con entrevistas no estructuradas. El tema extraído de las entrevistas fue "La experiencia del parto". Los resultados indicaron una delimitación temporal y generacional en la década de 1970. Los partos en las décadas de 1940 a 1960 ocurrieron en un contexto de transición del domicilio al hospital. La década de 1980 representa un punto de inflexión del modelo de atención, como tipo y lugar del parto y profesional que atiende a la mujer, con incremento de la tecnología y de las intervenciones obstétricas.

Abstract: this study aimed to characterize midwives according to current concepts among health professionals and to identify the ideological premises underlying proposals for their training. data from interviews with nine midwives, nurses, and physicians were interpreted using discourse analysis. the resulting empirical categories were "the situation of maternity care in brazil", "the ideal (or necessary) midwife and the possible midwife". when these empirical categories were interpreted, it was possible to "construct" an "emerging midwife" by dialectically overcoming the concept of "the ideal midwife".

Abstract: throughout the 20th century, obstetrics education has undergone innumerous changes which have accompanied changes in the maternal and newborn health care model and conceptions concerning professional nursing education and practice. this qualitative and documentary study aimed to describe and analyze the minutes of the meetings of the s?o paulo obstetrics school. the school was founded in 1912 and was adjacent to the university of s?o paulo medical school until 1970, when it was incorporated into the school of nursing. the minutes have recorded aspects of the school's operation such as student selection and performance, examinations, teaching programs, curriculum changes, faculty, school calendar, revalidation of foreign diplomas, financial turnover, and other disciplinary, administrative, and legal matters concerning the course. one can infer that the original purpose of creating the school was "in tune" with the broader project of the medical and social elite of the time.
ESCOLA DE OBSTETRíCIA DA UNIVERSIDADE DE S O PAULO: A HISTóRIA CONTADA NO LIVRO DE ATAS (1912-1970)

Abstract: A lo largo del Siglo XX, la ense anza de la Obstetricia ha sufrido muchas transformaciones, que acompa aron los cambios en la atención a la salud materna y del recién nacido y en las actividades profesionales en el área. Este estudio, de tipo cualitativo y documental, tuvo como objetivo describir y analizar las actas de reuniones de la Escuela de Parteras de S o Paulo. La Escuela fue fundada en 1912 y funcionó adscrita a la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidade de S o Paulo hasta 1970, cuando se incorporó a la Escuela de Enfermería. Las actas registran aspectos de su funcionamiento como desempe o de las estudiantes, programas de ense anza, profesorado, revalidación de títulos extranjeros, movimiento financiero y otros asuntos disciplinarios, administrativos y jurídicos del curso. Se pude inferir que el proyecto original de creación de la Escuela estaba de acuerdo al proyecto más amplio de la elite médica y social.

Abstract: O estudo teve como objetivos identificar a parteira, segundo a concep o de profissionais da área de saúde, e desvelar os pressupostos ideológicos que justificam sua forma o. Os dados de entrevistas com nove obstetrizes, enfermeiras e médicos foram tratados pela análise de discurso, resultando nas categorias empíricas "Situa o da Assistência ao Parto no Brasil" e "A Parteira que Queremos (ou Devemos) e a Parteira que Podemos". Mediante a interpreta o dos dados foi possível vislumbrar uma "parteira em constru o", que emergiu a partir da supera o dialética da "parteira ideal".

Abstract: the school of nursing at the university of s?o paulo and the s?o paulo state health department established a proposal to qualify nurses by a specialization program in midwifery, which purposes were: to analyse the midwifery care problems in the context of the family and the national health system; to qualify the nurse to give care to the woman in the pregnancy, delivery and postpartum, on clinical, epidemiological and humanistic bases; to qualify the nurse to delivery babies. the program was concluded by 19 students, whom delivered the rate of 35 childbirth/nurse.
