Agricultura e mercado de trabalho: trabalhadores brasileiros livres nas fazendas de café e na constru??o de ferrovias em S?o Paulo, 1850-1890
Lamounier, Maria Lúcia;
Estudos Econ?micos (S?o Paulo) , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-41612007000200005
Abstract: this article examines the engagement of brazilian workers in several tasks in railway building and coffee plantations in s?o paulo during the second half of the nineteenth century. in general, most of historiography argues that nacionais lived a marginal existence, either due to the prejudice of contemporary brazilian society against free poor people, invariably presented as "indolent", "vagrant" and "lazy"; or to the free people′s resistance to the shift from cultural practices based on traditional values, to a more disciplined, methodical labour life. in contrast to these views, first, this article stresses the presence of brazilian workers in the activities of both railway building and coffee plantations. second, the article maintains that, in fact, it was the failure of agriculture to generate year-round employment that produced a pattern of instability and geographical mobility, that many (planters, officials and railway entrepreneurs) interpreted as an indication of worker indolence or cultural bias against regular employment, and asked for harsh social legislation against the poor workers.

Abstract: this paper presents a mapping of the systemic functional translation studies (sfts) tradition in the brazilian environment, from its genesis up to developments in the 2000's. while studies during the earlier period are informed by the concept of "translation as (re)textualization", more recent sfts research can be charted along the 'cline of instantiation', translations being investigated as "instantiations-in-contexts", cross-lingual functional varieties of language, or still as sources of sfl-based language description of brazilian portuguese. from late 90's on, computerized corpora and corpus-based methodologies have been integrated into brazilian sfts, for which annotation methods for the tagging of sfl categories have been developed. the paper ends with a consideration of brazilian sfts against the background of international sfts as disseminated in the 2nd hcls.
