International Microbiology , 2005,
Abstract: the taxonomy of the "aeromonas hydrophila" complex (comprising the species a. hydrophila, a. bestiarum, a. salmonicida, and a. popoffii) has been controversial, particularly the relationship between the two relevant fish pathogens a. salmonicida and a. bestiarum. in fact, none of the biochemical tests evaluated in the present study were able to separate these two species. one hundred and sixteen strains belonging to the four species of this complex were identified by 16s rdna restriction fragment length polymorphism (rflp). sequencing of the 16s rdna and cluster analysis of the 16s-23s intergenic spacer region (isr)-rflp in selected strains of a. salmonicida and a. bestiarum indicated that the two species may share extremely conserved ribosomal operons and demonstrated that, due to an extremely high degree of sequence conservation, 16s rdna cannot be used to differentiate these two closely related species. moreover, dna-dna hybridization similarity between the type strains of a. salmonicida subsp. salmonicida and a. bestiarum was 75.6 %, suggesting that they may represent a single taxon. however, a clear phylogenetic divergence between a. salmonicida and a. bestiarum was ascertained from an analysis based on gyrb and rpod gene sequences, which provided evidence of a lack of congruence of the results obtained from 16s rdna, 16s-23s isr-rflp, dna-dna pairing, and biochemical profiles.

Prevalence of Overweight and Obesity in Adolescents: A Systematic Review

ISRN Obesity , 2013, DOI: 10.1155/2013/392747
Abstract: Objective. To review the extant literature on the prevalence of overweight and obesity in adolescents (10–19 years old) of both sexes. Design. The search was carried out using Medline and Scopus considering articles published from the establishment of the databanks until June 7, 2012. Data on the prevalence of children being overweight and obese from the International Obesity Task Force (IOTF) website was also reviewed. Only original articles and one National Health Report were considered. Forty studies met the inclusion criteria. Results. Twenty-five of these studies were nationally representative, and ten countries were represented only by regional data. Conclusions. The prevalence of overweight and obesity among adolescents worldwide is high, and obesity is higher among boys. The IOTF criterion is the most frequently used method to classify adolescents as overweighed or obese in public health research. 1. Introduction The prevalence of overweight and obesity among children and adolescents has widely increased worldwide [1, 2], making it one of the most common chronic disorders in this age group and in adulthood. The use of body mass index (BMI) for age to define being overweight and obese in children and adolescents is well established for both clinical and public health applications, because of their feasibility under clinical settings and in epidemiological studies [3, 4]. In children and adolescents, the natural increases in BMI that occur with age necessitate the use of age-sex-specific thresholds. The most widely used growth charts are the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC-2000) [5], the International Task Force (IOTF) [6], and the 2007 growth references for 5 to 19 year olds produced by the World Health Organization (WHO-2007) [7]. The CDC-2000 growth charts were developed to evaluate the nutritional status of US children and were originated from five cross-sectional representative surveys carried out in the US between 1963 and 1994. These growth charts are routinely applied to identify children and adolescents with a BMI greater than the 85th or 95th percentiles following the advice of the US Expert Committee on Childhood Obesity [8]. However, the appropriateness of an American dataset for defining overweight in young people from other countries is questionable [9]. The IOTF reference also uses age-sex-specific BMI percentiles, and overweight and obesity definition corresponds to an adult BMI of 25 and 30?kg/m2, respectively, and reflects values in children tracking to overweight and obesity in adults [6]. This reference is based
DAG Expression: High-Throughput Gene Expression Analysis of Real-Time PCR Data Using Standard Curves for Relative Quantification
María Ballester, Rubén Cordón, Josep M. Folch
PLOS ONE , 2013, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0080385
Abstract: Background Real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) is still the gold-standard technique for gene-expression quantification. Recent technological advances of this method allow for the high-throughput gene-expression analysis, without the limitations of sample space and reagent used. However, non-commercial and user-friendly software for the management and analysis of these data is not available. Results The recently developed commercial microarrays allow for the drawing of standard curves of multiple assays using the same n-fold diluted samples. Data Analysis Gene (DAG) Expression software has been developed to perform high-throughput gene-expression data analysis using standard curves for relative quantification and one or multiple reference genes for sample normalization. We discuss the application of DAG Expression in the analysis of data from an experiment performed with Fluidigm technology, in which 48 genes and 115 samples were measured. Furthermore, the quality of our analysis was tested and compared with other available methods. Conclusions DAG Expression is a freely available software that permits the automated analysis and visualization of high-throughput qPCR. A detailed manual and a demo-experiment are provided within the DAG Expression software at http://www.dagexpression.com/dage.zip.

Abstract: the purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of stock recommendations in returns and trading volumes. unlike previous research we have investigated the five most usual types of recommendations: buy outperform, hold, under-perform and sell. the methodology we propose is also different from previous studies. from our results we conclude that positive (negative) abnormal returns are associated to positive (negative and neutral) recommendations, the day of publication of the recommendation and the day before, but not the day after publication. we also document an asymmetry in the effect of recommendation on the stock trading volume, following the sign of the recommendation.

Trabajos de Prehistoria , 2009,
Abstract: The archaeozoological and taphonomical analyses of the faunal remains from levels 19 and 20 in the Mirador cave (Sierra of Atapuerca, Burgos) are presented. The main aim of this work is threefold: to study how faunal resources were managed, to characterize the occupation of the cave and to understand how the environmental resources were exploited at the end of the sixth millennium and the beginning of the fifth millennium cal. BC. Results show the development of human communities with a complex organization and a great environmental adaptation. Shepherds used the cavity as a sheepfold and as a domestic space during almost all the year. Sheep and goat husbandry comprised the economic basis; these taxa were exploited mainly for their meat and milk. Breeding of cattle and hunting would have been complementary activities.

Abstract: Physical Activity (PA) is very important during childhood and adolescence in order to promote healthy development and prevent obesity. The WHO recommends 60 minutes daily of moderate-vigorous activity (e 3 METs/day). The main objective of the study is to assess the levels of PA intensity performed daily by adolescents from a school using the triaxial accelerometry system and to know if they achieve the WHO recommendations. The sample size was 60 Spanish adolescents (14.52 ± .854 year-old) belongs to the Empordá school (Empúries, Spain). Previous informed consent was obtained from their parents and/or tutors. PA levels were obtained through accelerometry, Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated though weight and height, heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP) were measured using a digital automatic blood pressure monitor. Descriptive for all data was calculated, and T–test (p < .05) was used to analyze the differences between boys and girls. The main result show that males performed PA during longer time and at higher intensity than women. There is a low percentage of students who achieve the WHO recommendations. In conclusion, we believe very important to seek new strategies and methods to involve more adolescents in the practice of PA, and we believe that PA sessions at school are very important.

Physics , 2009, DOI: 10.1088/0004-637X/695/2/1505
Abstract: We present a Berkeley-Illinois-Maryland Association (BIMA) Array molecular survey of the star forming core ahead of HH 80N, the optically obscured northern counterpart of the Herbig-Haro objects HH 80/81. Continuum emission at 1.4 mm and 8 micron is detected at the center of the core, which confirms the presence of an embedded very young stellar object in the core. All detected molecular species arise in a ring-like structure, which is most clearly traced by CS(2-1) emission. This molecular ring suggests that strong molecular depletion occurs in the inner part of the core (at a radius of ~0.1 pc and densities higher than ~5 x 10^4 cm^{-3}). Despite of the overall morphology and kinematic similarity between the different species, there is significant molecular differentiation along the ring-like structure. The analysis of the chemistry along the core shows that part of this differentiation may be caused by the UV irradiation of the nearby HH 80N object, that illuminates the part of the core facing HH 80N, which results in an abundance enhancement of some of the detected species.
