Abstract: this study examines the impact of domestic violence against women on parenting practices. the sample consists of 60 mothers divided into two groups, victims of domestic violence (n = 30) and non victims of domestic violence (n = 30). the mothers were between 21 and 60 years of age, mostly married or living together, with low qualifications and belonging to poor families from a province in the north of portugal. the data collected with the inventory of educational practices revealed that in comparison to women who were not victims of domestic violence, abused women more often use inadequate educational practices in the interaction with their children, while classifying these practices more frequently as being adequate.

Abstract: currently soybean is the most economically important legume crop in brazil. due to its profitability soybean is being widely spread out all over the national territory. some assays have shown low response of this crop to liming in acid brazilian soil, under no-till age systems. acidity is one of the factors that limit the efficiency of the symbiosis rhizobia - legumes. this problem could be solved if acid tolerant strains were obtained or if tolerance to acidity could be induced. some papers demonstrated induced tolerance to acidity when the bacterium is previously exposed to a slightly acid ph. the aim of this study was to verify the growth of bradyrhizobium elkanii strain br 29 in culture media with different ph values (6.8; 6.0; 5.5). two experiments were carried out with two different culture media varying mainly regarding initial ph. strain growth, by optical density and colony forming units (cfu) number, and ph medium modification were evaluated. growth curves varied either in accordance with ph or culture media composition. growth based on maximum number of cfu.ml-1 was better at ph 5.5 in lopreto medium and at ph 6.0 at lorda and balatti medium. better growth on lowest ph (5.5) was related to greater exopolyssacaride production.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate the agronomic feasibility of an industrial biosolid for corn. the experiment was carried out on a dystrophic cambisol in two cropping seasons, 1999/2000 and 2000/2001. the application of 0, 6, 12, 18 and 24 mg ha-1 of biosolid dry matter basis, supplemented with k2o in both trials and with 1/3 of the recommended p2o5 rate in the second trial was compared to the complete mineral fertilization. biosolid application enhanced soil fertility, crop nutrition and grain productivity. yield response to doses was quadratic, and reached the maximum of 9,992 kg ha-1 with 22.5 mg ha-1 of biosolid, 21% higher than the complete mineral fertilization and 74% higher than the control with no fertilizer added. even in the largest biosolid dose, no symptom of nutrients, sodium or heavy metals toxicity was found. the equivalence in productivity to the mineral fertilization (7,895 kg ha-1) was attained with 10 mg ha-1 of biosolid. based on this equivalence to npk, the biosolid fertilizer value was estimated in r$ 43.70 per mg for dry residue and in r$ 8.74 per mg for wet material. considering transportation costs, biosolid application in corn crop is economically feasible on a distance comprising 66 km from the generating source.

Abstract: the experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of zn and p levels in nutrient solution on zn and p absorption and lettuce yield (lactuca sativa l.). a randomized block experimental design in 3 x 3 factorial arrangement with three replications was used. the treatments were three zn levels: low, normal and high, corresponding to 0.0, 1.5 and 6.0 mm l-1 and three p levels: low, normal and high, corresponding to 0.01, 1.5 and 6.0 mm l-1 as znso4.7h2o and kh2po4. twenty six days after transplantation (dat), the leaf area and leaf dry weight were not influenced by the treatments. at 52 dat, the leaf area, the leaf number and the shoot dry weight were not affected by zn addition when the p level was low; but when p levels were normal and high, the normal and high zn levels lead to the highest leaf area, leaf number, and shoot dry weight. phosphorus concentrations in the marketable leaves at each zn level were similar at p normal and high addition levels. the highest p concentration was observed in the stem followed by roots and marketable leaves. zinc concentrations in the marketable leaves, stem and roots, increased with zn addition to the nutrient solution.

Abstract: background and objectives: the occurrence of acute myocardial infarction (ami) during pregnancy is rare. the authors describe the case of mi in a 31-week pregnant woman and the importance of a multidisciplinary team for its approach. case report: thirty-one week pregnant woman with history of smoking, alcoholism and hypertension was admitted after an episode of syncope. on admission she was conscious and asymptomatic, although hypotensive. the electrocardiogram showed marked st-segment elevation in d1, avl, v1-v6. the cardiac enzymes were positive. the transthoracic echocardiogram showed reduction in septal and left ventricular contractility and an ejection fraction of 30%. angiography revealed proximal occlusion of the left anterior descending artery. after a non-successful balloon angioplasty, a metallic stent was placed. the patient started therapy with beta-blockers, aspirin and clopidogrel. as for the delivery, we chose to perform a cesarean section four weeks after mi. clopidogrel was suspended seven days before delivery. the preoperative cardiac function was improved by infusion of levosimendan started the day before. cesarean section occurred under epidural block. the intraoperative period showed no complications, except for mild hypotension easily corrected with phenylephrine. the apgar score for the newborn was 9 / 10. conclusions: this is one of the few cases of myocardial infarction and angioplasty reported during pregnancy. the authors discuss the decisions taken by the multidisciplinary team consisting of anesthesiologists, obstetricians, neonatologists and cardiologists, particularly with regard to dual antiplatelet therapy, the type of delivery and anesthesia.

Abstract: the agricultural use of biosolids has been stimulated, however, as the chemical composition of these residues is varied, the agronomic value and effects on soil quality characteristics need to be individually assessed in order to establish safety norms for their application. the present work evaluated biological characteristics after the application for two consecutive years of increasing doses (0, 6, 12, 18 and 24 t ha-1 dry matter) of biosolid generated by a pet fiber and resin industry. there was also a complete mineral fertilizer treatment in corn cultivation in a cambisol, compared to an adjacent area under brachiaria sp. without cultivation for the last ten years. the microbial biomass c and n, basal respiration and urease, b-glucosidase and fluorescein diacetate hydrolysis activities were increased, while the acid phosphatase activity was reduced with the increase of biosolid rates. the different biosolid doses had no effect on the microbial metabolic quotient (qco2). the decrease in phosphatase activity was related to the increase in phosphorus availability in soil rather than representing an adverse effect to biosolid application. with the application of 12 mg ha-1 biosolid (agronomic recommendation), the basal respiration and fluorescein diacetate hydrolysis were higher and the phosphatase activity lower than in the soil that received mineral fertilizer, while the other parameters were not affected by these treatments. the mycorrhizal colonization of brachiaria sp. did not differ among spontaneously growing plants in plots previously cultivated with corn and those of adjacent area. in spite of the lower spore number, an enrichment in the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi species was observed in the cultivated plots. organic carbon and microbial biomass were highly correlated with the other characteristics. this indicates that the changes in the amount and quality of soil organic matter, as a result of biosolid application, altered microbial dynamics and influen
