Neonatal administration of citalopram delays somatic maturation in rats
Deiró, T.C.B.J.;Manh?es-de-Castro, R.;Cabral-Filho, J.E.;Souza, S.L.;Freitas-Silva, S.R.;Ferreira, L.M.P.;Guedes, R.C.A.;Camara, C.R.V.;Barros, K.M.F.T.;
Brazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-879X2004001000009
Abstract: we investigated the somatic maturation of neonate rats treated during the suckling period with citalopram, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. groups with 6 male neonates were randomly assigned to different treatments 24 h after birth. each litter was suckled by one of the dams until the 21st postnatal day. body weight, head axis and tail length were measured daily from the 1st to the 21st postnatal day. time of ear unfolding, auditory conduit opening, incisor eruption, and eye opening was determined. pups received 5 mg (cit5), 10 mg (cit10) or 20 mg/kg (cit20) citalopram sc, or saline (0.9% nacl, w/v, sc). compared to saline, body weight was lower (24.04%, p < 0.01) for cit10 from the 10th to the 21st day and for cit20 from the 6th to the 21st day (38.19%, p < 0.01). tail length was reduced in the cit20 group (15.48%, p < 0.001) from the 8th to the 21st day. a reduction in mediolateral head axis (10.53%, p < 0.05) was observed from the 11th to the 21st day in cit10 and from the 6th to the 21st day in cit20 (13.16%, p < 0.001). a reduction in anteroposterior head axis was also observed in the cit20 group (5.28%, p < 0.05) from the 13th to the 21st day. conversely, this axis showed accelerated growth from the 12th to the 21st day in the cit5 group (13.05%, p < 0.05). auditory conduit opening was delayed in the cit5 and cit20 groups and incisor eruption was delayed in all citalopram groups. these findings show that citalopram injected during suckling to rats induces body alterations and suggest that the activity of the serotoninergic system participates in growth mechanisms.

Abstract: this is a descriptive, exploratory study with a qualitative method and non-experimental design, with analysis of absolute and relative frequency of data. it shows how to identify nursing diagnoses according to nanda taxonomy ii in post anesthesia care unit (pacu). the sample consisted of 30 adult patients undergoing elective surgery with general anesthesia, and evaluation of physical conditions according to american society of anesthesiologists (asa 1). the field of study was the pacu, which has 8 beds in a mixed network hospital in the city of santos. data were collected through a structured method, with data on gender, age, medical diagnoses, intervention-surgical anesthetic, surgical time, anesthetic time, vital signs including blood pressure at admission, assessment of the index of aldrete kroulik; and complications such as nausea, vomiting and pain. after the analysis of the nursing problems, nursing diagnoses were identified, with the greatest frequency being hypothermia, nausea, and acute pain.
Metabolic fate of glutamine in lymphocytes, macrophages and neutrophils
Curi R.,Newsholme P.,Pithon-Curi T.C.,Pires-de-Melo M.
Brazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research , 1999,
Abstract: Eric Newsholme's laboratory was the first to show glutamine utilization by lymphocytes and macrophages. Recently, we have found that neutrophils also utilize glutamine. This amino acid has been shown to play a role in lymphocyte proliferation, cytokine production by lymphocytes and macrophages and phagocytosis and superoxide production by macrophages and neutrophils. Knowledge of the metabolic fate of glutamine in these cells is important for the understanding of the role and function of this amino acid in the maintenance of the proliferative, phagocytic and secretory capacities of these cells. Glutamine and glucose are poorly oxidized by these cells and might produce important precursors for DNA, RNA, protein and lipid synthesis. The high rate of glutamine utilization and its importance in such cells have raised the question as to the source of this glutamine, which, according to current evidence, appears to be muscle.
The role of the Christian community in a plural society
T.C. Rabali
Koers : Bulletin for Christian Scholarship , 2002, DOI: 10.4102/koers.v67i4.381
Abstract: This article identifies four ways in which our society is often referred to as being plural. It discusses four pluralisms and indicates several challenges associated with each one of them. It argues that the Christian community has to consider all four of these aspects of pluralism when seeking to understand its role. It is argued that part of the role that the Christian community has to take seriously is that of maintaining and establishing institutions that will help in an open confession of Christ. This role includes that of having a vigorous and comprehensive apologetics, in the classical sense, of providing proofs for the central Christian positions, defending Christian positions by providing answers to questions that are raised, as well as offering an offensive that seeks to highlight the problems associated with non-Christian views.
Tumoral calcinosis in a dog with chronic renal failure : clinical communication
T.C. Spotswood
Journal of the South African Veterinary Association , 2012, DOI: 10.4102/jsava.v74i1.498
Abstract: A 2-year-old male German shepherd dog in poor bodily condition was evaluated for thoracic limb lameness due to a large, firm mass medial to the left cranial scapula. Radiography revealed several large cauliflower-like mineralized masses in the craniomedial left scapula musculature, pectoral region and bilaterally in the biceps tendon sheaths. Urinalysis, haematology and serum biochemistry showed that the dog was severely anaemic, hyperphosphataemic and in chronic renal failure. The dog was euthanased and a full post mortem performed. A diagnosis of chronic renal failure with secondary hyperparathyroidism was confirmed. The mineralized masses were grossly and histopathologically consistent with a diagnosis of tumoral calcinosis. Tumoral calcinosis associated with chronic renal failure that does not involve the foot pads is rarely seen.

Oliveira, Solange A.;Siqueira, Marilda M.;Costa, Antonio J.L.;Almeida, Maria T.C.;Nascimento, Jussara P.;
Revista do Instituto de Medicina Tropical de S?o Paulo , 1995, DOI: 10.1590/S0036-46651995000500007
Abstract: from march 1991 to april 1992, serum samples for igm detection were collected from 112 clinical measles cases reported to the health department of niterói, state of rio de janeiro. the positivity exceeded 90% for specimens collected from the 5th to the 29th day after the onset of the disease. after day 30 a decline in igm detection was observed, although positivity has been detected up to 90 days after the onset of the symptoms. forty-four patients (48.9%) with an igm response had a history of prior measles vaccination. in 5 of the 22 measles-igm negative cases the infection was due to other agents (rubella: 4 cases, dengue: 1 case). these results show that sensitivity of the test employed for confirming suspected measles cases is high, even in vaccinated patients.

Sena, Diniz M.,Rodrigues, Fabíola F.G.,Freire, Paulo T.C.,de Lima, S. G.
Grasas y Aceites , 2010, DOI: 10.3989/gya.105909
Abstract: This work describes the physicochemical characterization of the fruit pulp oil of Caryocar coriaceum (Wittm), “pequi.” The chemical composition was assessed by GLC, which demonstrated the following fatty acid contents: oleic (55.79%), palmitic (34.18%), heptadecenoic (5.86%), linoleic (1.80%), stearic (1.73%), eicosenoic (0.37%) and palmitoleic (0.27%). The vibrational spectroscopy results were typical of an edible oil, and are in accordance with the high unsaturated fatty acid content. Physical properties such as water content, acidity, peroxide index, saponification index, relative density, viscosity and refraction index are reported for the first time for this species. Pequi fruits have a high nutritional value, and are rich in protein and vitamins. In addition, their composition includes essential fatty acids, which accounts for the popular use of the fruit oil for antioxidant and antiinflammatory activity. There is great interest in extending the use of this natural product by exploiting the combined social, economic and therapeutic values of its derivatives.
Seasonal occurrence and production effects of the biting louse Damalinia limbata on Angora goats and 2 treatment options
L. Brown,De K. T.C. Van der Linde,L.J. Fourie,I.G. Horak
Journal of the South African Veterinary Association , 2012, DOI: 10.4102/jsava.v76i2.401
Abstract: Adult biting lice Damalinia limbata (Gervais 1844) were most numerous on Angora goats in southwestern Free State Province from November to May with the smallest numbers present during August. Nymphs were most numerous from January to March with the smallest numbers present during July. The largest proportion of adult lice was present on the ventral surface of goats during winter, when population numbers were lowest, and the largest proportion of nymphs during summer, when population numbers were highest. Infestation did not affect the body weight of goats, but adversely affected both the quantity and quality of mohair produced. A single treatment with deltamethrin, applied as a pour-on along the mid-line of the backs of the goats, effectively controlled infestation and resulted in a significant increase in mohair production compared with untreated goats. Deltamethrin sprayed along the sides of the animals was equally effective in controlling infestation.
