Influence of Age and Gender in Acquiring Social Skills in Portuguese Preschool Education  [PDF]

Abstract:

The specificity of educational contexts as mediators of social development through positive interactions is critical to children’s involvement in the kindergarten and therefore for their holistic development. The qualities of teacher-child interactions enhance the child’s self-esteem and autonomy, promoting peer acceptance and providing a successful learning experience. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the characteristic of gender and age are related to the acquisition of social skills of children attending kindergarten in a portuguese-speaking environment. The sample is composed of 581 children, age from 2 to 7 years old, who attended preschool education on average 18 months ago. Social Skills subscale (EAS) and Behavior Problems (EPC) was applied to the “Behavioral Scale for Preschool-PKBSpt” (Gomes & Pereira, 2012), Portuguese version of PKBS-2 (Merrell, 2002), Likert-type, four response levels, which seeks to assess the social and emotional skills, and behavior problems in early childhood, with the participation of educators. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), version 17.0 for Windows. The main results show that there are gender differences in the level of social skills. The girls reveal behaviors based on Social Cooperation and Social Interaction. The boys show Attention Problems/Overactive and Antisocial Behavior/Aggressive. Older children have the highest average level Social Cooperation and Social Independence. In the dimensions of behavior problems, the youngest children (3 and 4 years) had higher mean values, either in the factor Attention Problem/Overactive or the Antisocial/Aggressive. Older children (6 years old) had statistically significant differences in the problems of the type Social Withdrawal and Anxiety-Somatic problems. The child’s gender and age variables are important factors and should be included in educational practices, taking into account the development of social skills of children attending in preschool. Promoting articulated and differentiated development can prevent maladaptive behaviors in young adults. Finally thoughts are given on the implications of this study in the level of children’s involvement within their educational contexts.

Abstract:

There is much to be explored about the relationship of families with school regarding the use of educational institutions for children up to six and the effective co-responsibilities in the whole development of the child. Analyzing aspects of this which permeate public institutions for Early Childhood Education was the focus of this research, which discusses types of access, the expectations of families and actors involved with public institutions in the network of schools in the city of Rio de Janeiro, and the educational and social function of this stage of learning. The article focuses on the inclusion of children in the educational institution, based on on-site observation in two public institutions that use differentiated policies for child care: the first, under the aegis of the Full Early Childhood Program (“PIC”) targeting children up to three; the second being developed in the Child Development Center (“EDI”) conceived as a new model for early childhood education, bringing together in the same space children up to six. In addition to observing these two policies for working with children, school administrators and families were interviewed. It transpires that, in some situations, the school adopts attitudes that reinforce social and cultural differences; in others, the school is working towards maximizing its ability to produce new ways of giving quality care to the population.

Morfo-anatomia de frutos secos em espécies de Apocynaceae: significado ecológico e evolutivo

Abstract: dry fruits predominate in apocynaceae species, especially the follicle type reported for aspidosperma parvifolium a.dc., mesechites mansoana (a.dc.) woodson and prestonia coalita (vell.) woodson. anatomical analysis of intact and open fruits was carried out to compare characteristics with those of other species of this family. we found that the fruit of p. coalita is a bicarpellary septicidal capsule, showing that this genus has two types of fruits instead of one as previously thought. capsules may be found in other prestonia species and in other apocynaceae genera reported as having follicles. for apocynaceae, some taxonomic characters should be considered such as thickness and number of pericarp layers and sublayers; presence of aerenchyma, sclereids, non-lignified fibres, secretory idioblasts in the mesocarp; vascular-bundle position in the mesocarp; endocarp thickness and fibre orientation; presence of internal ribs in the pericarp. furthermore, the role of the internal ribs of the pericarp, as well as the non-lignified mesocarp fibres for the xerocastic mechanism are discussed. a total dehydration test was developed to determine maximum pericarp curvature and its implications for the dehiscence process.
A??o social midiatizada: analisando a recontextualiza??o de um evento social

Abstract: the goal in this paper is to discuss the construction of the mediatic event from a socio-discursive view, and illustrate how the same event is instantiated in three distinct genres: the front page of weekly magazines, the summary of weekly magazines and one publicity piece, in order to analyze how the mediatized social action is constituted within those three discursive genres, all samples from the weekly magazine veja, from february 23rd, 1994. the discussion here carried out is based on the critical discursive studies by norman fairclough (2003), and on works on social semiotics, more specifically the grammar of the visual design, as coined by gunther kress and theo van leeuwen (1996), in addition to the studies on media proposed by patrick charaudeau (2006). the three genres mentioned recreate, by means of images and verbal texts, the narratives around the event, selecting specific information, generating specific discourses relative to the institutional context. thus, the genres do institutionalize the ways for the regularization of social action and interaction.

Abstract: the article discusses the idea of the existence of a pre-colonial aesthetics of the american territory, based on the great geographic distribution of a same cosmological substrate. its material expression would be the different classes of archaeological objects involved in ritual. the concept that guides this discussion is the amerindian perspectivism. originally formulated to deal with the singularity of the amazonian indigenous thought, working on the symbolic relationship between the humanity and other beings, this concept with a pan-american distribution is recognized by the ethnographies, the myths, and the representations in the iconography of artifacts revealed by archaeology, particularly those that shows bodies in the state of transformation. these artistic representations of amazonian, andean and the north american northwestern coast pre-colonial objects are considered part of the systems of thought and social organization. they make it possible to recognize a mythological and cosmological unity in amerindian world that goes beyond social morphologies and political structures.

Abstract: the creation of indigenous public schools in 1997 by means of the programme for the implantation of indigenous schools in the state of minas gerais (piei-mg) was an important event for all the indigenous groups involved. among the xakriabá people, the process of schooling began twenty years earlier, and was intensified by the creation of the indigenous public schools. this accelerated expansion generated a very specific school context. in this article, explore the different perspectives of analysis of the schooling process proposed by the anthropology of education. two examples of the characteristics of the xakriabá schools the attendance of non official students, the "indolent", and the possibility of failing the best students focus our attention on those aspects of daily life that are not generally perceived as cultural elements (such as the verbal and non verbal interactional styles and the relations of authority). these aspects are not immediately visible and are not, therefore, taken as constitutive of the cultural specificity of the xakriabá school.

Abstract: the main objective of this article is to understand how people with low levels of formal scholastic qualifications deal with written information in their daily lives. basing herself on a case study on the phenomenon of literacy in the context of primary-school-level adult education courses, the author looks at the procedural aspects of the day-to-day use of reading, writing and arithmetic. she explores the literacy practises that are employed, the situations in which basic skills are used, the obstacles that people come up against and the adaptive solutions that are recommended. finally she puts forward the concept of literexclusion as one of the procedural faces of social exclusion.

Abstract: the key empirical object of the research work on which this article is based is pupils in adult education courses from the first cycle of basic education to ongoing education (cea). based on those pupils? position in the structure of society - origins, social trajectories and ways of life - and their relationships to literacy in daily life, this article seeks to understand the ways in which learning is experienced in the context of ongoing education and its implications for the acquisition of basic reading, writing and computational skills in order to process written information contained in printed documents. an attempt is also made to understand the procedural aspects of the social phenomenon of literacy for those without formal schooling, and the theoretical and methodological developments which the use of qualitative techniques may bring to studies in this area.

Procuro levantar como a mídia jornalística define e agrupa cada uma das práticas, explicita os atores sociais e relaciona causalmente as a es com as a es dos outros através da análise de uma reportagem. Como pressuposto teórico-metodológico, utilizo a Análise de Discurso Crítica tal como desenvolvida por Fairclough (2003), van Leewen (1997), além dos estudos sobre Linguagem da Avalia o (WHITE, 2004; MARTIN, 2006). Constatou-se que, na reportagem analisada, a representa o das mulheres em cargos de destaque na política evidencia vozes conflitantes sexistas.
