Lévi-Strauss no Brasil: a forma??o do etnólogo
Peixoto, Fernanda;
Mana , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-93131998000100004
Abstract: this article analyzes the brazilian period of claude lévi-strauss (1935-1938), tracing his publications, classes, and research during the time in which he was a professor of sociology at the universidade de s?o paulo in order to better understand the place brazil occupied in his intellectual itinerary. the purpose is to show that although this period was brief (and largely silenced), it was crucial to subsequent developments in the author's career as ethnologist and americanist. the text also assesses the significance of lévi-strauss' coming to brazil in the french context of the time, when americanism was a scarcely explored terrain, contrary to africanism, a "calling" then in vogue.
Diálogo "interessantíssimo": Roger Bastide e o Modernismo
Peixoto, Fernanda;
Revista Brasileira de Ciências Sociais , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-69091999000200008
Abstract: this paper attempts to outline the multiple dimensions of the dialogue between roger bastide and the brazilian modernists, especially mário de andrade. following the concerns of the brazilian "modernist" school, bastide establishes his contact with the country - with the arts, the literature and the folklore -, reconsiders mário de andrade's interpretations about aleijadinho and the baroque, and especially, shares the formulations of this "modernist" leader about the "authenticity"of the brazilian culture. the author seeks to show that bastide, through this interlocution, has earned his place as a foreign interpreter of brazilian culture and society.
A cidade e seus duplos: os guias de Gilberto Freyre
Peixoto, Fernanda;
Tempo Social , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-20702005000100007
Abstract: the aim of this text is to analyze the city guides written and published by gilberto freyre in the 1930's: the "practical, historical and sentimental guide of recife" (1934) and "olinda - the second practical, historical and sentimental guide of a brazilian city" (1934). the careful reading of these little-studied works allows one to discuss a number of issues, since freyre talks about the cities, as well as about himself and about other contemporary topics. it is under these circumstances - the place of the reader becomes indiscernible from that of the tourist that i follow his urban tracks, conscious of the images projected on the city, and most of all, of the clues on his own condition as interpreter of the brazilian urban scenery and social life. the itinerary freyre chooses functions beautifully as a compass to place one in the position of analyst of modernization and modernity, taking regional surroundings as a starting point. the texts present themes and issues that mobilized the author during his whole life.
Lévi-Strauss no Brasil: a forma o do etnólogo
Peixoto Fernanda
Mana , 1998,

Peixoto, Sérgio Viana;Firmo, Josélia Oliveira Araújo;Lima-Costa, Maria Fernanda;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2006000900024
Abstract: the aim of this study was to determine smoking prevalence and associated factors among older adults (> 60 years). the study was conducted in greater metropolitan belo horizonte and bambuí town, both located in minas gerais, brazil. in the former, 1,774 subjects were selected, and in the latter, 1742. in belo horizonte, prevalence of current and past smoking was 19.6% and 39.2% among men and 8.1% and 14.1% among women, respectively. in bambuí, the corresponding figures were 31.4% and 40.2% among men and 10.3% and 11.2% among women, respectively. in belo horizonte, poor health and poor physical functioning were associated significantly with past smoking, but these associations were not observed in bambuí. among current smokers, these associations were not consistent. our results agree with the data observed in developed countries, showing great heterogeneity of factors associated with smoking. strategies to reduce smoking by the elderly should take into consideration the absence of association between signs/symptoms and smoking.

Peixoto, Sérgio Viana;Firmo, Josélia Oliveira Araújo;Lima-Costa, Maria Fernanda;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2007000600007
Abstract: the aim of this study was to verify smoking cessation rates and associated factors. the study was performed in greater metropolitan belo horizonte and the town of bambuí, both in the state of minas gerais, brazil. study participants included 13,261 and 1,018 adults (> 20 years), respectively, randomly selected among residents of each area. the smoking cessation rate was 40.6% (95%ci: 39.1-42.3) in greater metropolitan belo horizonte and 38.8% (95%ci: 34.4-43.1) in bambuí. in greater metropolitan belo horizonte, smoking cessation showed an independent and positive association with age (> 40 years), schooling (4-7 and > 8 years), number of chronic conditions (> 2), and number of medical visits in the previous year (1-3 and > 4), and a negative association with marital status (unmarried). bambuí showed an independent and positive association with age (> 40 years) and a negative association with number of hospitalizations in the previous year (> 2). the heterogeneity of factors associated with smoking cessation made it difficult to identify vulnerable groups in order to target prevention strategies. further research is important to elucidate this heterogeneity.
