Abstract: This descriptive cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the leadership style of swimming coaches from the state of Paraná, Brazil. The trial subjects were 33 male athletes (67.3%), 16 female athletes (32.7%), and six coaches. Data collection occurred during the final phase of the Parana 2010 Open Games. The measuring instrument used was the Leadership Scale for Sports (LSS). For data analysis we used the Shapiro Wilk test, Mann-Whitney, the Manova, and Post Hoc of Scheffe (p <0.05). The results showed that comparing between the perception and preference of athletes there were significant differences in dimension of training instruction (p = 0.001), reinforcement (p = 0.008), and democratic style (p = 0.020), male athletes have a greater preference for autocratic behavior than female athletes (p = 0.031), there was no significant difference between the dimensions: perception of athletes and self-perception of coaches. We reached the conclusion that the swimming coaches from the state of Paraná have the democratic style, using reinforcement and training-instruction as tactical and technical resources for their coaching; the champion team coach had a profile similar to what is currently preferred by athletes which, according to literature, would be the ideal one to achieve success in sports.

Abstract: study the presence of signs of temporomandibular desorders in asymptomatic patients in the beginning, during, and after the orthodontic treatment, to verify if the clinical examination is enough for a proper diagnosis, and if the orthodontic treatment is a factor that contributes for the development of temporomandibular dysfunction on this asymptomatic patients. the orthodontic treatment was not considered contributing factor for development of temporomandibular desorders.

Abstract: In this article we seek to systematize historical and ethnographic informations about mbyá presence in the Guaíba hydrographic area (Rio Grande do Sul/Brazil), taking into account the relations between indians and non-indians through the process of territorial configuration of Bacia Platina. This discussion is based on fieldwork, literature and primary sources about three contemporary mbyá occupations -- Petim, Passo Grande and Arroio do Conde.

Abstract: This study’s objective was to verify the association between Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) and perceived impact on sport performance from Brazilian indoor soccer athletes. A total of 112 athletes were enrolled, with ages varying from 18 to 31years old, and who participated in the Brazilian Clubs Cup in 2007. The instruments used were: a self-reported sheet based on criteria from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist (2000) for the diagnosis of PMS and a sport performance impact perception sheet, organized in a Likert scale with values ranging from 0 (“notaffected”) to 3 (“extremely affected”). Data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney test, Pearson’s chi-square and Poisson regression with robust variance. The prevalence of PMS was 47.32% and the perceived impact on sport performance for those with PMS was RP 1.71 (95%CI 1.23 to 2.38). The symptoms associated with sport performanceimpact were depression, irritability, breast tenderness, difficulty concentrating, back pain and tiredness. The intensity with which the athletes with PMS feel their performance affected during the premenstrual phase was significant in the “lowly affected “(RP 2.195%CI 1.26 to 3.55) and “extremely affected” (RP 3.5 95%CI 2.23 to 5.62) categories. Athletes with 6 to 9 symptoms presented higher risk (RP 3.20 95%CI 1.53 to 6.71) than athletes with 4 to 5 symptoms (RP 2.82 95%CI 1.32 to 6.05) or with 2 to 3 symptoms (RP 2.57 95%CI 1.25 to 5.30). In conclusion, the presence of PMS, the number and thekind of symptoms all exhibited associations with the sport performance impact perceived by Brazilian indoor soccer athletes.

Abstract: the columbina talpacoli (temminck, 1811) dove, a small bird of the order columbiformes, is abundant throughout brazil and interacts closely with city inhabitants. this study describes the morphological and histochemical aspects of the epididymal region and ductus deferens of this species, comparing them with those of other bird species studied. it is believed that a better understanding of the reproductive biology of columbina talpacoli could help to solve the ecological and sanitary problems involving these birds.

Abstract: numida meleagris (linné, 1758) is an african bird that was brought to brazil. as the bird adapted to the climate of this new habitat and spread ali around the country, it is nowadays part of our avifauna. the present study continues topographic and morphofunctional researches on the female genital apparatus of this species, since it describes histological and histochemical aspects of magnum, a segment of oviduct. magnum was dissected and processed according to routine and histochemical staining procedures to detect glycogen and mucous substances in the epithelial tissue and mucous glands. besides focusing morphological aspects, the study compares the data obtained with those of other species aiming to contribute to the enlargement of the knowledge on reproductive biology of brazilian birds what may be important to make their biological control easier.

Revista Brasileira de Zoologia , 1995, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-81751995000100016
Abstract: the study of the female genital system of columba livia (gmelin, 1789) is part of the research on the reproductive biology of brazilian birds. this work describes the morphological aspects of the ovary of columba livia, as well as the histological differences observed in the ovarian follicles during the ovocyte maturation process. ten columba livia females were studied, whose ovaries had been dissected, fixed in bouin and helly solutions, and histologically processed for staining (hematoxylin-eosin; gomori's trichromic and weigert's technique and gomori's technique for connective tissue fibers). the ovary has an irregular surface, is located in the abdominal cavity, and relates to the cranial portion of the left kidney and caudal extremity of the left lung. histological examination shows that the ovary is covered with simple cubical epithelium, underlined by loose connective tissue that continues internally, surrounding the follicles. the ovarian follicles were described, in their different stages of development, with basis on the morphological changes occurring in the ovocyte and in the layers that surround it, in each phase of maturation. among the follicles, groups lof cells of two distinct types, surrounded by connective tissue, are observable: clear cells with a spherical nucleus, and acidophilic cells with a slightly elongated nucleus. the studies of the ovary of columba livia reveal histological similarities between this species and columbina talpacoli (temminck, 1811), whose ovaries were examined by ribeiro et al. (1991).
