Silva, Maria Cristina Sant'Anna da;Lautert, Liana;
Revista da Escola de Enfermagem da USP , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0080-62342010000100009
Abstract: this descriptive study used a qualitative approach and was developed with older adults who were members of a recreational center in porto alegre (brazil). the objective was to understand the influence of the sense of self-efficacy on maintaining health-promoting behaviors among the participants. interviews were performed with eleven older adults who obtained scores on the whoqol-brief questionnaire with standard deviation equal or above the group mean (>85.18). content analysis of the interviews revealed four categories: positive personal attitudes and attributes; expectation to enjoy a higher quality of life; expectation to live longer; and other aspects that make behavior maintenance easier. the study found evidence that these individuals sustain health-promoting behaviors similar to what is recommended by health professionals and organizations. it appears that they maintain those behaviors due to their positive sense of self-efficacy.
Analysis about production of nursing knowledge on health education and aging: review article

Online Brazilian Journal of Nursing , 2008,
Abstract: This study is exploratory, of qualitative nature and has the objective to identify the bibliographical production of nursing related to the aging, to the education in health and the methodological strategies, in Brazilian publications, from 2000 to 2006. Online database BDENF was used to search the articles and the keywords were: health education, aged, aging, behavior and nursing. Eight articles had been identified and five were chosen which are in the following publications: Revista Brasileira de Enfermagem (two), Revista Latino-Americana de Enfermagem (two) and Cogitare Enfermagem (one). The discussion of the selected articles was based on the technique of content analysis. The results had demonstrated that the subjects education in health and aged people have little space in researches by Brazilian nursing, in this period and at the database consulted, and group activity was distinguished as predominant methodological strategy of education in health. In such activity, the promotional actions of the autonomy of aged individuals had been valued. It is recommendable that the subject of the study could take part in new inquiries because population aging is a reality tending to expansion. The increment of studies in this area is needed; therefore the education in health is relevant for the process of human aging with quality.

Online Brazilian Journal of Nursing , 2009,
Abstract: This is a review article which aims at presenting andragogy as the science that can orients the education of elderly people, in order to provide theoretical construct to grant nursing consultations to those individuals. For this, its concepts are approached and its assumptions are discussed, based in the six premises elaborated by Malcolm Knowles. This article starts from an extended vision of elderly, in which the mission of nurse/educator is to help them to develop their potential, considering their social atmosphere, their personal and collective experiences and their expectations. It is believed that nurses can use the andragogy theory, because it is perceived that it presents elements that can be added to the nursing consultation.

Abstract: the diamondback moth plutella xylostella is an important pest of cruciferous plants, particularly of cabbage (brassica oleracea var. acephala). the activity of an ethanolic leaf extract of annona muricata on the development of the larvae and pupae of a laboratory culture of p. xylostella was evaluated, together with the seasonal variation of this activity. neonate larvae were fed with kale leaf discs that had been treated by immersion in solutions of a. muricata extracts, and the effects on the duration and viabilities of the larval and pupal phases of the insect were determined. the activities of the extracts varied significantly according to the time of collection of the leaf material and were maximal for leaves collected during the dry period of the year (october-february). at the highest concentration tested (5 mg.ml-1), the most active extract caused 100% larvae mortality; at lower concentrations, the duration of the larval phase was increased by up to 2.6 days and the larvae survival was significantly reduced. the pupal phase was affected far less by exposure to the extracts, although such duration was increased by up to 1 day in the presence of non-lethal concentrations. the significance of these results with respect to the use of extracts of a. muricata for their insecticidal activity is discussed.

Abstract: objective: the purpose of this study was to quantify and assess the cost of food wastage in eight cafeterias of a big steel mill. methods: eight cafeterias were followed during five months. quantification of food wastage was done considering the leftovers and the number of meals planned and served daily. for determining the cost, preparations were divided into groups, and the cost was obtained from the average price of foodstuffs purchased during the month. results: fifty percent of the cafeterias did not achieve wastage less or equal to 30g (the per capita food wastage goal set by the company). the total per capita food wastage ranged from 24g to 60g, equivalent to 176-1213kg of food wasted monthly. salads were wasted more often in most foodservices. the monthly cost of food wastage reached 2.2% to 3.0% of the amount spent monthly on food. it represented a high expense for the foodservice (approximately 80-108 minimum wages). the results allowed the proposal of intervention measures such as planning and development of appropriate preparations, identification of customers, and nutrition education actions. conclusion: the cafeterias presented considerable food wastage, hence money loss. implementation of interventions can minimize these losses. savings from reducing wasteful spending could be used for improving production processes.
