Abstract: the objective of this text is to characterize the genesis of rural education's practice and conception, noting the land concentration and the property concentration as structural elements generating social inequality. it's purpose, is also, to highlight the main achievements that took place from 1990 to 2012 within the rural education, and point out legal disputes regarding the right to higher education among the people of the field. the reflections presented in this article are from bibliographical and documental researches, as well as empirical studies conducted from 2002 to 2012. we make the core assumption that rural education is the result of collective experience built by movements and organizations of rural workers.

Abstract: this paper aims to explore rural education and its place in the educational political agenda these last years. the text is organized in three parts: the first one explains how rural education fits into the political agenda and highlights the role of organized civil society; the second one presents characteristic pedagogical practices in schools from land reform settlements in the state of paraná; the last one describes post-graduate academic work on rural education and related social movements. it is the result of an analysis of theses and dissertations about education, especially within the landless workers movement (mst). out of the 160 different research projects from post-graduate programs in education developed in brazil (1987-2007), 108 have been analyzed so far.

Abstract: this article analyses research projects which deal with education in the movimento dos trabalhadores rurais sem terra (mst), defended in postgraduate programmes in education in brazil, highlighting the theoretical-methodological approaches which they employ. the theme education and rural social movements is discussed based on authors like arroyo, campos, gohn, sposito, beserra and damasceno. it demonstrates that the research projects present issues/subjects that have a close relation with the social-educational practices existent in the social movement. it reveals the need for dialogue between the different areas of knowledge, especially education and sociology. it makes use of a qualitative approach and substantiates the analyses in dialectic and historical materialism, especially in the characterization of the mst as an expression of class.

Abstract: This article questions the rural education and intends to demonstrate signs of public policies construction which has been possible due to the effective rural workers participation. Current rural education has been effectively executed for a decade, taking the National Conference for a Rural Basic Education in 1998 as a landmark. It integrates the workers struggle for the accomplishment of a social right - education. It also takes for granted the concept of emancipatory education, in terms of Mészàros, putted against the concept of excludent education that ignores the rurality of Brazilian territory. Current rural education is opposed to the previous model. It is constructed collectively by workers, and in an increasing national movement it has been enhancing educational projects, partnerships, governmental segments engagement as well as the need of curricular changes, especially in higher education.

Abstract: This paper aims to discuss some aspects of the educational practice and of the research on social movements, particularly on the Landless Rural Workers Movement. The intention is to set relations between the experiences lived in daily life of the social movement and of the permanent settlement and the traits of schooling life; to demonstrate the possibilities and the challenges of the links between the social movement educational theory and practice and that necessary to the curricular content comprehension; and to think about the educational research traits in the social movement. Gohn′s (1992) and Arroyo’ s (2004 a, b) ideas contributed to the thoughts on social movement educational dimensions and to the analyses of the rural social movement as an educational one. The social movement educational practice occurs in different fronts, such as in meetings, in the work cooperative space, in the confrontation either with the State or the land owners. The educators’ practice involves political capacitation and formation. In the pedagogical documents produced by the MST, it is implicit the role research plays in the educational practice. The educational proposals are born from the semminars’, meetings’ and events’ records; and it has as starting point in the educational practice at school, in life and in the productive activities in the permanent settlements. The educators’ and learners’ experiences question the shooling pedagogy and announce that the knowledge recognition constructed by the pedagogical process subjects is essential to the comprehension process and to the approppriation of the knowledge constructed along the human trajectory.

Abstract: Este artículo analiza pesquisas defendidas en los Programas de Postgrado en Educación en Brasil que trataron de la educación en el Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra (MST) y destaca los enfoques teóricos metodológicos presentes en ellas. Discute la temática de la educación y de los movimientos sociales del campo con referencia en Arroyo, Campos, Gohn, Sposito, Beserra y Damasceno. Demuestra que las pesquisas anuncian problemáticas/ objetos de pesquisa en la que hay estrecha relación con la práctica socioeducativa en el movimiento social; evidencia la necesidad de diálogo entre las áreas de conocimiento, en especial la educación y la sociología; hace uso del abordaje cualitativo de pesquisa y fundamenta los análisis en el materialismo histórico-dialético, en especial en la caracterización del MST por su expresión de clase.

Abstract: the article examines science and technology communication aimed at a non-specialized audience, using the general press as the main source in this endeavor to capture an image of the popularization of science in portugal. based on the fact that the nineteenth-century press was overtly concerned with garnering an audience and spreading knowledge, the study uses news, articles, and advertisements about the 1853-1856 cholera epidemic to assess the era's scientific knowledge (especially about prevention and treatment) and how this information was conveyed to society and used by it.

Abstract: academic studies on local elites are of recent vintage and require rigorous theoretical support and methodology. the choice and handling of sources have greatly contributed to opening up new lines of inquiry which have been faithfully followed by a new generation of social scientists. this article sets out the methodology and main sources to be used, with practical examples, such as oral memory and even literature, in addition to institutional sources, both local and national, and the standard bibliographies.
