Fortification of foods is now widely used to prevent folate deficiency. Folic acid has been added to corn flour and its efficacy in the prevention of NTD has been proved. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of the intake of fortified corn-flour versus non fortified flour and to folic acid supplement, on blood folate levels in women of childbearing age. Forty-five women were randomized into three groups according to: (A) use of fortified flour (n=18), (B) non-fortified flour (n=17); (C) supplementation with 5 mg of oralfolic acid (n=10). All females answer a dietary and anthropometric questionnaire applied once a month during three months. Blood red cell (IE) and plasmatic (P) folate were measured at the beginning and at the end of the study; also the DNA analysis for the 677T mutation was performed. The corn flour was provided to groups A and B during three months, to be consumed as eight tortillas daily. Group C received 5.0 mg tablet of folic acid (Valdecasas ), once per week, during three months. IE and P folate and hematocrito were significantly increased in women from group C (p<0.05). Only plasmatic folic acid l

Revista de Sociologia e Política , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-44782008000100008
Abstract: this article evaluates information made available through the websites of brazilian state legislatures on state and district representatives from the 2003-2007 period, in addition to presenting a proposal for building an indicator to evaluate and measure the degree of availability of information on these actors through these sites. through application of this indicator, we evaluate the analytical advantages of applying a collective biography approach that uses brazilian legislative websites as its exclusive source. we seek to show how, given the insufficient transparency in the homepages of most of the state legislatures, exclusive or predominant use of this source is not recommendable for knowledge and monitoring of the political action of the elites that are part of it. this is not the case for brazilian federal representatives (camara de deputados).

Espectrofotometria derivada. Método zero-crossing. ABSTRACT A contribution to the derivative spectrophotometry method Derivative spectrophotometry has been successfully used as a quality control tool in pharmaceutical analysis for the simultaneous determination of drugs in multi-component formulations. This technique, accessible to most laboratories, offers an alternative means of enhancing the sensitivity and specificity in mixture analysis. The procedure is simple, rapid and does not require any preliminary separations or treatment of the samples. The aim of this study is to provide pointers for the development of methods of analysis by derivative spectrophotometry (DS), using the zero-crossing technique, and to encourage professionals and researchers to use DS as an alternative method for quality control of drug combinations, especially in the study of dissolution. Much information, extracted from the literature, has been assembled here, together with the laboratory experience gained while developing a DS method to analyze a combination of two human immunodeficiency virus protease inhibitors. Various orders of derivatives, values of delta lambda ( ) and scan speeds were tested. Keywords: Analysis of binary mixtures. Derivative spectrophotometry. Derivative zero-crossing method.

Journal of Environmental Protection (JEP) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/jep.2013.43027
Abstract:

In this work is developed a proposal of environment indicators needed for the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) process in Mexico’s Federal District (FD); through which are authorized the construction and realization of different work actions and activities. The methodology is based on the combination of cabinet and field work, performed in three stages. In the first, a documental review was carried out within the topic of Environment Impact (EI), the EIA and the study area, with a subsequent analysis of the environment indicators at an international, national and regional scale. In the second, the systematization of information was performed for the sixteen study cases at a local scale and the organization and analysis of a data base with the allotted information. And in the last stage, a field work was realized with participative observations in three verification sites and interview applications to the principal actors of the EIA process. These results allowed: to determine the main limitations within the EIA process (methodological, technical and operational), to propose an indicators scheme, and to formulate recommendations focused on the improvement of this Environment Public Policy instrument.

Poverty and Health in Argentina
Maria Alejandra Silva
Social Medicine , 2009,
Abstract: This article examines health conditions in the rural areas of Central Argentina, the country’s main region for soy-bean production and export. Health conditions are analyzed through the concepts of emerging and re-emerging diseases in a context of increasing poverty. Data on poverty and health was obtained from both primary sources (trade union, government officials, rural doctors and the South Watch/FA/FODEPAL/UNR working group) and secondary sources (IPEC/INDEC, IDESA, Consultora Equis, the Argentine Ministry of Employment, ILO, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of the Environment, toxicology centers and rural doctors). Analysis of rural health conditions gives cause for concern. There is evidence of deterioration in the social determinants of health such as an increase in rural and urban poverty associated with informal employment and child labor. At the same time lack of government epidemiological and toxicological data appears to hide or distort the reality of health conditions.
