Marta PAZOS,Maria A. LONGO,M. Angeles SANROMAN
Revista Romaneasca pentru Educatie Multidimensionala , 2013,
Abstract: The university course of Bioprocess Engineering is designed to introduce the student to the principles of Biochemical Engineering. The students acquire a global understanding of the biochemical processes. A new teaching methodology, very different from that which was common 30 years ago with non-participatory lectures and classes based on taking notes, was established. In this paper these new teaching strategies have been described. Moreover, the results obtained in the interviews realized along the course in order to determine the satisfaction of the students have been showed. The obtained results permit to verify the total integration of the students into the system, participating and proposing numerous activities. Students were satisfied with new teaching methodology developed in the pilot experience and most of them wished to continue using these new strategies. Summing up, we can conclude that the teaching and learning course was successful. In addition, we detected that the knowledge of methods, practical applications and the reality of biotechnology was increasedsignificantly with this methodology.

Pollen Sterility—A Promising Approach to Gene Confinement and Breeding for Genetically Modified Bioenergy Crops
Joel P. Hague,Stephen L. Dellaporta,Maria A. Moreno,Chip Longo,Kimberly Nelson,Albert P. Kausch
Agriculture , 2012, DOI: 10.3390/agriculture2040295
Abstract: Advanced genetic and biotechnology tools will be required to realize the full potential of food and bioenergy crops. Given current regulatory concerns, many transgenic traits might never be deregulated for commercial release without a robust gene confinement strategy in place. The potential for transgene flow from genetically modified (GM) crops is widely known. Pollen-mediated transfer is a major component of gene flow in flowering plants and therefore a potential avenue for the escape of transgenes from GM crops. One approach for preventing and/or mitigating transgene flow is the production of trait linked pollen sterility. To evaluate the feasibility of generating pollen sterility lines for gene confinement and breeding purposes we tested the utility of a promoter ( Zm13Pro) from a maize pollen-specific gene ( Zm13) for driving expression of the reporter gene GUS and the cytotoxic gene barnase in transgenic rice ( Oryza sativa ssp. Japonica cv. Nipponbare) as a monocot proxy for bioenergy grasses. This study demonstrates that the Zm13 promoter can drive pollen-specific expression in stably transformed rice and may be useful for gametophytic transgene confinement and breeding strategies by pollen sterility in food and bioenergy crops.

Abstract: As características físicas (pH) e microbiológicas (contagem total de psicrotró cos e bactérias lácticas) de cox o duro bovino (m.
Monte Carlo calculation of the translational relaxation of superthermal H atoms in thermal H2 gas
A. Panarese,S. Longo
Physics , 2011, DOI: 10.1088/0004-637X/749/1/23
Abstract: We propose a simple and reliable method to study the translational relaxation of 'hot' H atoms following their production by chemical mechanisms. The problem is relevant to PDR's, shocks, photospheres, atmospheric entry problems. We show that the thermalization of H atoms can be conveniently studied by a simple method and set the basis for further investigations. The method adopted is Monte Carlo method including the thermal distribution of background molecules. The transport cross section is determined by the inversion of transport data. Plots of the collisions density of H atoms in H$_{2}$ gas are calculated and discussed also in the context of simple theories. The application of the results to astrophysical problems is outlined including numerical results for the reaction H + H$_{2}$O $\rightarrow$ H$_{2}$ + OH.

Abstract: objective: to describe clinical events of sickle cell disease and the correlation with β-globin haplotypes and α-thalassemia in under 6-year-old children. methods: a retrospective study was conducted of under 6-year-old children from the neonatal screening program in rio de janeiro. forty-eight male and 48 female children were enrolled in this study, 79 with sickle cell anemia and 17 with hemoglobin sc. the mean age was 29.9 (standard deviation = 20.9) months, 62 (16.2 ± 8.6) were aged between 0-3 years old and 34 (54.9 ± 11.3) were from 3-6 years old. painful events, acute splenic sequestration, hemolytic crises, hand-foot and acute chest syndromes and infections were evaluated. results: the events were more frequent in under 3-year-old children, 94% of children had at least one episode. infection was the most common event affecting 88.5% of children. acute splenic sequestration took place earlier, while painful crises and acute chest syndromes in under 6-year-old children. thal-α 3.7 was observed in 20.9% of cases. bantu was the most frequent haplotype found, followed by benin. no correlation was observed between clinical events and β-globin haplotypes. children with sickle cell anemia and α-thalassemia have less infectious events. no correlation was found among these polymorphisms and clinical events, however, the majority of children with bantu/bantu and without α-thalassemia had more clinical events.
Entrer dans la vie professionnelle dans un contexte social incertain Starting one’s professional life in an uncertain social context. The case of Argentinean youth
María-Eugenia Longo
This article analyzes different contexts and temporalities and how they are combined in the construction of young people’s professional careers in Argentina. In this qualitative and longitudinal study, the practices and speech of young Argentineans, both women and men, are analyzed. An in-depth interview was recorded with them every two years after they left school in 2006. Many studies have shown the existence of a multiplicity of social and individual temporalities, and this article first analyzes temporal standards or recurring frequencies and periodicities in some fields and activities in Argentina. But individuals do not react the same way in the face of social temporalities, which is why the article then goes on to analyze the ways youth experiences time. Different types of young people’s relationship to time have been identified.
Delivering Collaborative Web Labs as a Service for Engineering Education
Mario A. Bochicchio,Antonella Longo
International Journal of Online Engineering (iJOE) , 2012, DOI: 10.3991/ijoe.v8i2.1897
Abstract: As Internet speed grows up and academic networks reach more users, engineering schools take interest in online laboratories as a mean to increase the spectrum of offered services and to reduce costs by sharing expensive lab equipments. In this perspective, online labs must comply both with the scientific and pedagogic requirements coming from the lab users (students, researchers, …) and with the requirements coming from the administrative and technical staff in charge to manage and deliver the lab services. In this paper we describe a system architecture based on both the classes of requirements and discuss the main results achieved implementing a prototype of the proposed architecture in a real academic scenario.
