Abstract: home violence is one of the reasons most frequently mentioned by street children to justify home abandonment. the present research aims to investigate how children under this condition perceive their families. fifty children from two groups were interviewed: twenty-seven were in the institutions and twenty-three in the streets. although the perceptions of the two groups of children were different, the results showed that most of them expressed affection and acceptance shifted with maltreatment and rejection toward their families. therefore, the results suggest that these children along the developmental process construct different meanings of family. there are clear evidences of the oscillation in their conceptions of a thought family - idealized, referential, setting of social norms - and a lived family - the one that comes up in everyday life, mainly in the case of children who live in the institutions.

Yunes, Maria Angela Mattar;
Psicologia em Estudo , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-73722003000300010
Abstract: the present work presents positive psychology as a movement that proposes the investigation of potentially healthy aspects of human beings in opposition to traditional psychology and its emphasis in psychopathology. among the phenomena that indicate healthy life, resilience is distinguished by its references to processes that explain bouncing back to adversities whose hegemonic discourse is focused on the individual. the quantitative studies have contributed to the naturalization of resilience as a human capacity, and the family studies were identified as based on qualitative data within systemic, ecological and developmental perspectives. having considered the methodological difficulties and the ideological controversies of the concept it is suggested a cautious investigation of meaning before the application of the term.

Revista Interamericana de Psicología , 2005,
Abstract: The study of the phenomenon of resilience in families is a new domain in Psychology and therefore requires further investigation, either from the conceptual or methodological point of view. The present article presents a critical think about the quantitative studies on resilience in individuals and considers that the complexity of this construct suggests new methodologies to study the phenomenon in families. As a possible methodological solution we propose the association of two qualitative strategies: the reflexive interview and grounded-theory. The reflexive interview is an interactive and dynamic method to obtain information and the grounded-theory presents principles of analysis that complement and subside this type of collection allowing the concepts to emerge from the data rather than being imposed on it

Paidéia (Ribeir?o Preto) , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-863X2009000200010
Abstract: this study aimed to investigate interactions between families and shelter institutions, based on the bioecological theoretical model of human development by urie bronfenbrenner. the interaction between workers of an institution in the extreme south of brazil and the family members of a sheltered child were followed during the process of family reinsertion. the professionals showed idealized beliefs and perceptions that prescribe the expectations and life style of traditional nuclear families. the family, in turn, feared the judgments of the institution representatives due to the possibility of losing the guard of their other non-institutionalized children. therefore, the reports of the family and the institution revealed mistrust between the two contexts, which hinders and postpone the return of children to their original families.

Abstract: extrafamilial sexual abuse is a form of violence where children and adolescents are victimized by adults with no parental connection. ecological analysis allows us to observe the multicausality of the phenomenon and to understand risk and buffer mechanisms in different contexts. three mothers of girls who had suffered this type of abuse participated in this qualitative study. the instrument used was a semi-structured interview. the results point to the presence of similar aspects to those of intrafamilial abuse: syndrome of secrecy, secondary gratification, peculiarities of the interaction and organization of families. there are similar elements in the infancies of mothers and children: loss of parents; constant material deprivation and suffering through abandonment and maltreatment. the situation experienced by the daughters is perceived by their mothers as characteristics of "weakness" and "impulsivity" and they do not attribute blame to the aggressor, which increases their daughters' vulnerability when faced with abusive situations.

Abstract: this article presents a comparative study on the health community agent's beliefs about the possibilities of resilience in low-income single-parent families and the coping strategies of these families in adverse situations that emerge from their life stories. the notion of resilience as applied in psychology was taken as reference, which refers to the processes that explains how people overcome adversities. four health agents and four single parent families were interviewed. the methodological strategies to guide the data analysis were: open interviews, life stories, reflexive interviews and grounded-theory. the results showed that the community agents hold pessimist beliefs about the poor families functioning in opposition to the elements that indicate resilience in these families' life stories. the results point to the need of transforming and adjusting the social agent's perceptions on groups who live in poverty.
