Revista Panamericana de Salud Pública , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S1020-49892003000400006
Abstract: objective: to report on the sociodemographic characteristics and work experiences of 31 male sex workers (msws) in the city of córdoba, argentina. methods: information on each of the msws was collected using a questionnaire that covered his personal characteristics and his work background, self-assessed general health status, and use of health and social services. scales were included in order to assess attitudes towards condom use, knowledge about safe sex, perceptions about the risk of getting hiv, individual self-efficacy, and locus of control. the questionnaire also asked each respondent to rank his level of agreement with interactive strategies for gaining client compliance with safe sex practices. results: in terms of their self-identity, out of the 30 msws who answered the question, 10 of them (33.3%) self-identified as heterosexual and 9 (30%) as bisexual. alcohol and drug consumption and unsafe sexual practices were relatively low among the msws. of the 31 msws responding, 21 of them (67.7%) reported that they had been tested for hiv, but only 13 of them (41.9%) said they had been vaccinated for either hepatitis a or hepatitis b. a variety of differences were found between the study's 17 street sex workers (sex workers who offer their services in public places such as streets and parks) and the 14 independent sex workers (sex workers who are self-employed, advertise and manage their own business, and have an exclusive location for their commercial sex work). the street msws were younger and had less formal education. independent msws were economically more settled, had been working longer in the sex industry, and were more comfortable about having sex with men. independent msws were also more likely to report a gay sexual orientation and less likely to report using alcohol, marijuana, or other substances. conclusions: the differences between street msws and independent msws are important since they could influence the negotiating of safer sex practices with

Revista Panamericana de Salud Pública , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S1020-49891999000700006
Abstract: a study was done in 1994 to determine the effectiveness of the fluoridated dairy products that the chilean national program for supplementary feeding had been distributing to reduce the high prevalence of children?s dental caries in rural areas of that country. for the study, the prevalence of caries was assessed in two rural communities of the sixth region of chile. children in the study community of codegua had received fluoridated dairy products, while children in the control community of la punta had received nonfluoridated dairy products. three years after the program began in codegua, the community showed a significant improvement in the indices of prevalence of caries. over that time period, the prevalence of caries among children 3 to 6 years old declined between 40% and 60%. among children 3 years old, the proportion of them without a history of caries increased by 74%, from 40.7% to 70.8%. among 4-year-olds, that proportion rose by 71%, from 33.3% to 56.9%. similar to results obtained elsewhere with programs to fluoridate drinking water, the outcomes in codegua were achieved without any other steps by the national program for supplementary feeding, such as motivational campaigns for mothers or educational efforts to encourage consumption of the program?s food products.

Male sex workers in Córdoba, Argentina: sociodemographic characteristics and sex work experiences

CONCLUSIONS: The differences between street MSWs and independent MSWs are important since they could influence the negotiating of safer sex practices with clients. Programs aimed at preventing the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections and promoting responsible self-care among MSWs in Córdoba should be introduced. Such programs could increase the proportion of MSWs who know their HIV serostatus and could make MSWs more aware of the risk of different sex acts performed in commercial sex encounters. Given the differences that we found between street MSWs and independent MSWs, specific strategies and educational materials should be developed for those two subgroups within the MSW population.

Abstract: Artisan Park La Loma de la Cruz, is a park located in a suburb of the city of Cali, a place where different groups converge youth from youth cultures. The park is a place for meeting, socializing, communication practices through which young people interact and build relationships. The park is set up as a stage of “coexistence” in which rockers, punks, emos, skaters and members of the LGBTI community stay together and share the same dwelling place (Figure 1). In the worlds of life of these young people, the words in different languages are a part of his being and his feelings, hence the affectations of joy and sadness, as defined by Spinoza (1980)1, are a way of weaving links and establish relationships communication. It is also possible to identify forms of recognition, Honneth’s way, recognition of love and solidarity2. These forms of recognition collide when young people, relate to the adult world, in the park, are made by artisans, police and neighbors. From the adult world, the form of contempt is evident in the rejection of the young by their expressions, especially those with expressing his affectations manifest. If young people recognize the existence of other people, as well as their own differences in the way they think, if they recognize the action in their own inter-subjective relationships and in the same way they construct a “we”, we would be spectators of new ways of being together; of ethical and political linking which go through new ways of living together and in which the sense and the shared meaning of life are negotiated that show a way of understanding in communication.

Abstract: objective: to evaluate the impact of pelvic floor muscle (pfm) training on the quality of life (qol) in women with stress urinary incontinence (sui). methods: prospective clinical trial with 36 women with a diagnosis of sui confirmed by urodynamic study. women with neuromuscular diseases, using hormone replacement therapy, and with prolapse stage iii and iv were not included. the exercise protocol for the pfm consisted of slow contractions (tonic fibers), followed by rapid contractions (phasic fibers) practiced in the supine, sitting, and standing positions, three times a week for a period of three months. we evaluated the impact of pfm on qol using the king's health questionnaire (khq), a voiding diary, and digital palpation to assess the function of the pfms during the initial evaluation and after three months of treatment. the result was described as means and standard deviations. we used the wilcoxon test for comparison of the khq scores for paired samples, and the significance level was set at 0.05. results: there was a significant decrease in the mean scores of the domains assessed by the khq regarding the perception of health, impact of the incontinence, limitations of daily activities, physical limitations, social limitations, personal relationships, emotions, sleep/disposition, and measures of severity. in agreement with these results, significant decrease in nocturnal urinary frequency and urinary incontinence, as well as significant increase in muscle strength and endurance were observed. conclusion: pfm training resulted in significant improvement in the qol of women with sui.
Reflecting on the dichotomy native-non native speakers in an EFL context
Mario,Claudia;
Anagramas -Rumbos y sentidos de la comunicación- , 2011,
Abstract: this article provides a discussion based on constructs about the dichotomy between native and non-native speakers. several models and examples are displayed about the spreading of the english language with the intention of understanding its development in the whole world and in colombia, specifically. then, some possible definitions are given to the term ''native speaker'' and its conceptualization is described as both reality and myth. one of the main reasons for writing this article is grounded on the promotion of the concept of what is native as something based on scientific facts, transcending the analysis from the common sense (han, 2004). topics such as language commands and its teaching are tackled in terms of strengths and weaknesses of a native-speaking teacher who teaches his/her mother tongue in a foreign country. finally, students' points of view are described about the native and non-native teachers. at the end, the article makes emphasis on the need for understanding the dichotomy between native speakers and non-native speakers in order to improve the english language teaching in colombia.

Mario,Juan José;
Revista de Ingeniería , 2007,
Abstract: the recent deterioration of the environment in colombia is principally due to an accelerated demographic and economic growth with little state control. however, construction of infrastructure works has also significantly contributed to this situation. environmental considerations have increasingly been taken into account in engineering projects in the last decades. it is up to the engineering profession to assume a set of values that will ensure environmental ethics which put the general interest and that of future generations before individual interests.
La gens y el patrimonio de la Iglesia regio-aristocrática o del regnum en León y Castilla: principios de estabilización durante el segundo tercio del siglo X
Mario Veiras, Dolores
Hispania Sacra : Revista de Historia Eclesiástica , 2003,
Abstract: When the ideas if service, ecclesiastic good' perpetuity and bishops', abbeys' and priests' capacity are applied the ecclesiastic heritage becomes linked to the King's and aristocracy's progeny. This gives rise to new relations in the King's Church and consequently the gens idea/concept is developed.
