Air Quality Regarding to TSP in Six Cities of Sonora, Mexico, a Criticism to the NOM-025-SSA1-1993 and a Proposed Criterion for Its Non-Compliance  [PDF]

Abstract:

In the present study, the air quality is assessed for the year 2010 regarding to the Total Suspended Particles (TSP) for six cities of Sonora, Mexico, representing the first regional study in Sonora in air quality. The assessment used performance indicators and indicators of compliance with the regulations. It is established that in all the cities the maximum limit value of daily concentration of 210 μg/m3 is exceeded, being the percentage of days above the rule of 30%, 78%, 76%, 6%, 3% and 62% for Agua Prieta, Nogales, Puerto Penasco, Hermosillo, Guaymas and Obregón respectively, classifying these days with poor air quality. According to the annualized index used, the air quality was not satisfactory for the period of study in the six cities. Nogales and Puerto Penasco presented the most adverse conditions of air quality with annual average values of TSP of 363 and 345 μg/m3 and maximum daily of 1047 and 1239 μg/m3 (498% and 590% above the norm) respectively. The requirements of coverage that establishes the Mexican Official Standard NOM-025-SSA1-1993 (SSA, 2005) are questioned for its compliance, proposing in this paper a criterion of non-compliance by prioritizing the protection of health and the precautionary principle. It is recommended to implement air quality management programs (PROAIRE) in these cities.

ESTIMACIóN DE LAS CONSTANTES k Y L0 DE LA TASA DE GENERACIóN DE BIOGáS EN SITIOS DE DISPOSICIóN FINAL EN BAJA CALIFORNIA, MéXICO

Abstract: En las comunidades de Baja California, México, existen diferencias en las características propias de los sitios que impiden generalizar los parámetros para predecir la generación de biogás. Con el objetivo de proyectar con mayor precisión la generación de biogás, en esta investigación se determinó el índice de generación de metano (k) y el potencial de generación de metano (L0) en cuatro comunidades, dos urbanas (Mexicali y Ensenada) y dos rurales (San Quintín y Vicente Guerrero) de Baja California, México. Se realizaron estudios de caracterización de residuos, se utilizaron como base algunas constantes del Modelo Mexicano de Biogás Versión 2.0, y se siguieron los lineamientos del Panel Intergubernamental sobre Cambio Climático (IPCC). Los resultados muestran que el 64 % de los residuos generados son orgánicos, lo cual influye en el valor de los parámetros k y L0. Los valores de los parámetros promedio obtenidos en los cuatro sitios de estudio son similares a los rangos establecidos por el IPCC y el World Bank Group (WBG) (k = 0.0404 por a o y L0 = 73.645 m3/t de residuo). En algunos modelos los parámetros k y L0 ya están preestablecidos, sin embargo, se sabe que la determinación de estos parámetros in situ otorga una mayor certidumbre a la estimación de la generación de biogás.
Distribution and Characterization of PM10 in City and Valley of Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico  [PDF]

Abstract: The variability of the levels of atmospheric particulate matter PM10 and its composition is assessed in the rural and urban zones of Mexicali during fall and winter 2008-2009, using a low level volume Minivol sampler, with quartz and Teflon filters. During fall the Mexican norm was exceeded (120 μg/m3 in 24 hr) in only two occasions, while in winter it was exceeded twelve times. The predominant component in fall was geological material with 62.5% for the rural zone and 48.5% for the urban one. In winter the geological material was also predominant with 65% for the rural zone and 54.4% for the urban zone. The aim of this work is the interpretation of the variability of the atmospheric PM10 particulate matter at two selected zones (urban and rural of Mexicali) during fall and winter, with emphasis on the chemical composition. The results suggest that the pollution in the urban and rural zones has common sources during winter whereas in fall the pollution has different sources.
Gestión ambiental transfronteriza para la generación eléctrica en la región California, Estados Unidos-Baja California, México

Abstract: El estado de Baja California (BC) puede convertirse en el sitio preferido para el arribo de más inversiones en el rubro de generación eléctrica. Lo que favorecería este escenario es una mayor laxitud de la normatividad y los procedimientos ambientales de México, respecto a los de Estados Unidos.Tanto en San Diego-Tijuana como en Imperial-Mexicali, se observan problemas de incumplimiento de las normas de calidad del aire propuestas por ambos gobiernos federales. Aquí se sugiere el establecimiento de un mecanismo binacional de administración de las cuencas atmosféricas compartidas, que defina un procedimiento de evaluación ambiental estratégica y transfronteriza, para permitir la instalación de industrias nuevas sin que representen un aumento en el volumen de emisiones, y mayor degradación de la calidad del aire.

Abstract: the burning of agricultural waste in the mexicali and imperial valleys, on opposite sides of the u.s. - mexico border, constitutes an important source of air pollutants emissions, such as methane (ch4), carbon monoxide (co), nitrogen dioxide (no2), hydrocarbons (nmhc) , and particles smaller than 10 microns (pm10). dealing with the agricultural smoke problem must consider a common air shed formed by both valleys, which shares extremely dry and hot weather not exceeding 80 mm of rain precipitation annually, plus the fact that agriculture is their main activity. furthermore, mexicali's economy is also based on the manufacturing industry and other activities. in mexicali, the residuals burned are mainly wheat, and in a smaller proportion barley, safflower and corn. the health damages caused by pm 10 emissions are important in both valleys.

Abstract: La quema de residuos agrícolas en los valles de Mexicali e Imperial, separados por una línea divisoria, constituye una fuente importante de emisión de contaminantes al aire, de compuestos como el metano (CH4), monóxido de carbono (CO), bióxido de nitrógeno (NO2), hidrocarburos (NMHC) y partículas menores a 10 micras (PM10). Para abordar el problema de los humos agrícolas se debe considerar la cuenca atmosférica común, formada por ambos valles, que comparten un clima extremoso cálido y seco, con menos de 80 mm anuales de lluvia, y basan su economía en la agricultura, y el de Mexicali además en la industria manufacturera y otras actividades. En Mexicali, lo que se quema es sobre todo residuos de trigo y en menor proporción de cebada, cártamo y maíz. Los da os a la salud ocasionados por las emisiones de PM10 son significativos en ambos valles

Abstract:

The waste derived from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) is of interest now worldwide, in some countries due to the rapid technological development and in others due to technological dependence through the acquisition of second hand equipment. Therefore it is necessary to implement strategies for the sustainable management of electrical and electronic equipment at the end of its useful life. This paper presents the results of an investigation that was conducted in a city located in the Northwest of Mexico, which seeks to understand the management practices of household WEEE generators. A survey was applied to a representative sample of the population with a confidence level of 90%. Six home appliances were quantified and it was found that approximately 21% of them are disposed directly as part of the household flow of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), while 79% are storage for a latter sale, repair or reuse. The results obtained support the need to develop evaluations and to implement possible scenarios for the sustainable management of Electrical and Electronic Waste.

Abstract: we present the case of a male patient, aged 14 years, with diagnosis of lisfranc fracture-luxation, more than 24 hours of evolution and compartmental syndrome, urgently operated in the teaching provincial pediatric hospital eliseo noel caama?o, achieving the anatomical reduction and remission of the symptoms and signs, with a satisfactory evolution. acute luxations are urgent lesions, and they should be reduced quickly, or pathologic alterations at a short, medium or long term may happen, including substation phenomena. we considered that knowing this kind of traumatic lesions is basic for physicians working in emergency units.

Abstract: Se presentó un paciente masculino, de 14 a os de edad, con diagnóstico de fractura-luxación de Lisfranc, con más de 24 horas de evolución y síndrome compartimental, intervenido quirúrgicamente de urgencias, en el Hospital Provincial Pediátrico Docente Eliseo Noel Caama o, lográndose la reducción anotómica y remisión de los síntomas y signos, con una evolución satisfactoria. Las luxaciones agudas son lesiones de urgencia, y se deben reducir lo antes posible, si no pueden ocurrir alteraciones patológicas a corto, mediano y largo plazo, incluyendo fenómenos de sustentación. Se consideró básico el conocimiento de este tipo de lesión traumática por parte de los facultativos de urgencias. Aplicación de dos pruebas estadísticas de bondad de ajuste en muestras complejas: un caso práctico en el campo forestal

Abstract: in this research two goodness-of-fit tests are compared in terms of their type i error: pearson's chi-square test and rao-scott test with correction of second order, applied to data collected using sampling methods that do not fulfill the assumptions of independence and equal probability of inclusion of observations, methods called complex surveys. both tests were utilized to fit diametric categories in a gmelina plantation (gmelina arborea), applying systematic sampling with fixed area plots and with variable area plots (bitterlich sampling or variable radius plot), and employing simulation techniques. the rao-scott test with correction of second order registered a lower type i error, close to the nominal α, when compared to the pearson chi-square test, due to the fact that the former takes into account the effects of the sample design and corrects the violation of the assumptions. the results obtained in this research show that the use of pearson's chi-square goodness-of-fit test is inappropriate in data obtained applying fixed area and variable area plots, widely used in forestry inventories. therefore, it is important to use statistical tests that take into account sampling design complexity, in order to achieve valid inferences.
