Abstract: Since 1932, the Curu River watershed has received assistance from the Federal and the State government. It stands out among other Ceara watersheds and has been the first to implement the irrigated perimeter system (1975) and also to organise a Watershed Committee (1996). Nowadays, it has serious environmental problems related to the effects of inadequate use of the natural resources. Thus, the objective of this investigation was to analyse physico-chemical and microbiological parameters in sections of rivers of the Curu basin, using Resolution no 357 (CONSELHO NACIONAL DE MEIO AMBIENTE, 2005) as the main reference. In the field, the main potential factors in the degradation of surface waters in the watershed were identified through the check list method, and 15 sampling stations in river sections were defined and located geographically. Five collections of water samples were taken and analyzed in the laboratory over a period of one year (feb./2003 to mar./2004). During this study, it was observed that the degradation of water resources increases with economic and demographic development of the Curu basin, because of the devastation of the original vegetation and the contamination of the surface water with draining from urban and rural activities.

Abstract: Over the past three decades discussions have been held regarding environmental issues including evaluations and studies on natural and social sustainability with the purpose of mitigating the increasing degradation of the environment. The UN Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm in 1972 and the UN Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 are worthy of mention in this respect.Scientific and governmental authorities, as well as the technical media, have been discussing and announcing the results of reseacrh work on the subject of environmental degradation, especially with regard to dry ecozones susceptible to desertification, considered a problem of worldwide proportions (Rubio, 1992).Agenda 21, Chapter 12.2, of the United Nations Environment Programme, defines desertification as “land degradation in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas resulting from various factors, including climatic variations and human activities”.

Abstract: coccidioidomycosis is a systemic mycosis with a variable clinical presentation. misdiagnosis of coccidioidomycosis as bacterial pneumopathy leads to inappropriate prescription of antibiotics and delayed diagnosis. this report describes an outbreak among armadillo hunters in northeastern brazil in which an initial diagnosis of bacterial pneumonia was later confirmed as coccidioidomycosis caused by coccidioides posadasii. thus, this mycosis should be considered as an alternative diagnosis in patients reporting symptoms of pneumonia, even if these symptoms are only presented for a short period, who are from areas considered endemic for this disease.

Abstract: This paper presents the validation of a computational tool that serves to obtain continuous measurements of moving objects. The software uses techniques of computer vision, pattern recognition and optical flow, to enable tracking of objects in videos, generating data trajectory, velocity, acceleration and angular movement. The program was applied to track a ball around a simple pendulum. The methodology used to validate it, taking as a basis to compare the values measured by the program, as well as the theoretical values expected according to the model of a simple pendulum. The experiment is appropriate to the method because it was built within the limits of the linear harmonic oscillator and energy losses due to friction had been minimized, making it the most ideal possible. The results indicate that the tool is sensitive and accurate. Deviations of less than a millimeter to the extent of the trajectory, ensures the applicability of the software on physics, whether in research or in teaching topics.

Abstract: the increase in the incidence of fungal infections and the frequent report of resistance and therapeutic failure has promoted the performance of phytochemical screening for compounds with antifungal properties. based on this, the present study investigated the antifungal potential of extracts of baccharis ligustrina, b. schultzii, croton jacobinensis, licania rigida, moringa oleifera, vernonia sp. and v. brasiliana and of essential oils of lippia alba (chemotypes 1, 2, 3 and 4) and ocimum gratissimum. initially, a qualitative evaluation of the antifungal activity of each vegetal sample against strains of candida albicans and microsporum canis, through the agar diffusion method, was performed. extracts of m. oleifera (mlf-c) and vernonia sp. (tvs-h) presented activity against c. albicans and m. canis with inhibition halos =10mm. then, minimum inhibitory concentrations (mics) for mlf-c and tvs-h against 12 strains of c. albicans and m. canis were determined through the methodology established by the clinical and laboratory standards institute (clsi), and acute toxicity tests against artemia sp. were performed for both extracts. mics (80%) for mlf-c and tvs-h varied from 0.156 to 2.5mg ml-1 against c. albicans and from 0.039 to 1.25mg ml-1 and 0.039 to 0.625mg ml-1 against m. canis, respectively. mics (100%) for mlf-c and tvs-h varied from 0.625 to 2.5mg ml-1 for c. albicans and from 0.039 to 2.5mg ml-1 and 0.078 to 1.25mg ml-1 against m. canis, respectively. lethal doses (dl50) of mlf-c and tvs-h were 201.09 and 204.17mg ml-1, respectively, being, therefore, demonstrated the low toxicity of these extracts. m. oleifera and vernonia sp. extracts presented in vitro antifungal activity against c. albicans and m. canis, creating perspectives for the development of studies on the characterizations of their bioactive components.
