Abstract: a cross section study was carried out in a farming community from nova friburgo, rio de janeiro state, brazil, to examine epidemiological, clinical and laboratory aspects of multiple exposure to pesticides in a representative sample of 102 small farmers. both males and females were submitted to an extensive protocol which included an occupation questionnaire, biological sample collection for toxicology analysis and clinical - general and neurological - evaluation. the toxicology test results showed light to moderate episodes of acute intoxication by organophosphorates either described by the farmers or observed during clinical examination. thirteen cases of delayed neuropathies (12,8%) as well as 29 cases of neural behavioral syndromes and psychiatric disorders associated to the continued use of pesticides were diagnosed. these results indicate recurrent multiple overexposures to high concentrations of different chemicals, with serious damage to vital functions, especially considering their young age (average 35 ± 11 years old) and the productive period in their lifetime. these results show how important it is to monitor multiple exposure to pesticides - a chain of events that may have major impacts on public health and the environment.
Positive correlation between serum and peritoneal fluid CA-125 levels in women with pelvic endometriosis

Sao Paulo Medical Journal , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-31802006000400010
Abstract: context and objective: one of the diagnostic markers of endometriosis is ca-125, and elevated levels of this are caused by high concentrations in the ectopic endometrium. the objective of this study was to correlate ca-125 levels in serum and peritoneal fluid from women with and without pelvic endometriosis. design and setting: this was a prospective, cross-sectional, controlled study of consecutive pa-tients undergoing laparoscopy for infertility, pelvic pain or tubal ligation, during early follicular phase, at the university hospital of faculdade de medicina de ribeir?o preto. methods: fifty-two patients were divided into two groups: endometriosis group, consisting of 35 patients with biopsy-confirmed pelvic endometriosis, and control group, consisting of 17 patients without endometriosis. ca-125 levels in serum samples and peritoneal fluid were determined by chemiluminescence. results: ca-125 levels in serum and peritoneal fluid were higher in patients with advanced pelvic endometriosis (means of 39.1 ± 45.8 u/ml versus 10.5 ± 5.9 u/ml in serum, p < 0.005; 1,469.4 ± 1,350.4 u/ml versus 888.7 ± 784.3 u/ml in peritoneal fluid, p < 0.05), and showed a positive correlation between each other (correlation coefficient (r) = 0.4880). women with more advanced degrees of endometriosis showed higher ca-125 levels in both serum and peritoneal fluid (p = 0.0001). conclusion: there is a positive correlation between serum and peritoneal fluid values of ca-125 in women with and without endometriosis, and their levels are higher in peritoneal fluid. advanced endometriosis is related to higher levels in both serum and peritoneal fluid.
Conceitos de filosofia na escola e no mundo e a forma??o do filósofo segundo I. Kant
Seneda, Marcos César;
Kriterion: Revista de Filosofia , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-512X2009000100012
Abstract: this text intends to discuss, from the kantian point of view, what may be taught and what may be learned in philosophy. its objective is to construct kant's hypothetical arguments in face of the structuralist method of reading philosophical texts. to circumscribe this theme, which is apparently quite broad, we take as guide line a well-known classroom text from i. kant, published by g.b. j?sche under the title manual of general logic courses (manual dos cursos de lógica geral). kant taught for more than forty years, until the end of his teaching activities in 1797, and on it he presents considerations which are quite fertile and current regarding the teaching of the history of philosophy and the formation of the philosopher. based on the distinction between historical knowledge and rational knowledge, and the distinction between the concept of philosophy in the school and the concept of philosophy in the world (ak 9:24), we will try to present kantian contributions which may still be considered relevant to discuss the way of teaching philosophy and the formation of the philosopher.
A criminologia no Brasil ou como tratar desigualmente os desiguais
Alvarez, Marcos César;
Dados , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0011-52582002000400005
Abstract: in this article we discuss how the ideas of cesare lombroso (1835-1909) and his followers were incorporated into the intellectual debate in brazil in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. by specifically analyzing the intellectual production of brazilian legal scholars and jurists of the time - who drew on ideas from criminology to conceive brazilian society and to propose legal and institutional reforms - we attempt to demonstrate how these ideas contributed to the elaboration of differentiated forms of legal and penal treatment for certain segments of the population.

A fundamenta o das ciências compreensivas: a posi o de Dilthey reconstruída a partir de Leibniz, Wolff e Kant
Marcos César Seneda
Princípios : Revista de Filosofia , 2007,
Abstract: Dilthey’s work fills a fundamental role in contemporary philosophy insofar as Dilthey distinguishes two spheres through which we have access to all of reality: objective experience (die Erfahrung) and lived experience (das Erlebnis). This distinction allows Dilthey, in contrast to the natural sciences, to conceive of the conditions of evidence and validity of the comprehensive sciences. Even if not named in exactly these terms, this distinction will be at the base of the texts of many authors at the end of the 19th Century and in the 20th Century. Although Dilthey elaborates his theory throughout his vast works, our objective is to reconstruct this distinction he establishes from the way he reinterprets the principle of sufficient reason as formulated by Leibniz and Wolff. Following that, we also seek to show how this reinterpretation allows Dilthey to contrast the sphere of knowledge related to lived experience from the sphere of theoretical knowledge circumscribed by Kant. As such, the principal argument presented here establishes a connection between the way Dilthey reinterprets the principle of sufficient reason and the way he scientifically reconstructs the foundation for the comprehensive sciences, conceiving of them as based on a specific relation between evidence and validity.

Guiana dolphins (Sotalia guianensis) displaying beach hunting behavior in the Cananéia Estuary, Brazil: social context and conservation issues
Santos, Marcos César de Oliveira;
Brazilian Journal of Oceanography , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1679-87592010000200005
Abstract: to elaborate a fuller description of the beach hunting behavior displayed by guiana dolphins (sotalia guianensis) in the cananéia estuary (ce) (25os, 48ow), a photo-identification study was conducted from may 2000 to july 2003. three land platforms were chosen at the main entrance of the above-mentioned estuary, where scientists enjoy a unique opportunity to observe dolphins at greater proximity, undisturbed. observations were opportunistic and unevenly distributed in time and space. to enhance the identification efforts, an 80-pound crossbow was used to collect skin samples in order to determine the sex of the eight individuals thus monitored. in 67 days of surveys, rendering approximately 80h of direct observations, 4,102 photographs were taken, of which 1,098 (26.8%) were considered useful for identification purposes. a total of 103 groups were reported (3.7 ± 2.6 individuals), ranging from solitary dolphins to 15 individuals. female-calf pairs were observed in 92.4% of all the groups investigated. on the first occasion, a calving interval was observed for the species in the ce: approximately 3 years and 9 months. of the 40 individuals identified at least once, eleven used the sloping beaches regularly: females kn #s 10, 30, 255, 268 and 279; males kn #s 86 and 257; and four individuals of unknown sex. the characteristics of the associations among beach hunters were evaluated by the analyses of association indices. a total of 83 possible associations between dyads were analyzed using the half-weight index and two selective criteria (5+ and 8+ sightings/individual). mean association indices varied from 0.12 to 0.16, evidencing weak bonds among beach hunters. most regular beach hunters were females, showing that the beach hunting behavior should probably be considered more typically female. beach hunting in the ce might be considered another example of cultural transmission in cetacean societies.
