Haemorrhagic enteritis seroconversion in turkey breeders: field observations
Raffaella Ceruti,Marco Della Valentina,Luigi Gavazzi,Annalisa Venni
Italian Journal of Animal Science , 2010, DOI: 10.4081/ijas.2007.321
Abstract: Seroconversion to viral haemorrhagic enteritis (HE) was studied in seven flocks of turkey breeders (17.974 birds in total), after 20 weeks of the onset of egg production. They showed no clinical signs, and mortality rate was normal. However, the infection caused a drop in egg production lasting about five weeks (-2.32 eggs laid during this period), but had no effect on hatching parameters.
ICT and Inclusion in Higher Education: A Comparative Approach  [PDF]
Valentina Della Volpe
Open Journal of Social Sciences (JSS) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/jss.2015.39007

The following research describes an attempt to combine ICT and Special Education through an inclusive pedagogical perspective. It examines how an innovative use of Information and Communication Technology can help create inclusive environments on the web. Specifically, the study focuses on the way the University responds to diversity and to e-inclusion through some development phases of an experimental research project, which is most far-reaching called “Network@ccessible: teaching/learning together and for everyone in a life project” carried out by six Italian universities and research institutions, from 2009 to 2014, and involved 1174 students (1.6% disabled students). This study is split into two main parts: 1) description and analysis of the data collected following the administration of an inquiry tool, developed to detect the climate experienced by the students involved in the online working groups; 2) investigation and detection of the elements of change that can encourage the process of inclusion in online learning environments to acquire credits allocated to the university courses. This study proposes further research to take place in the area of inclusive online university courses.

Resource-based Theory and Service-dominant Logic: A New Combined Approach to Revisit the Strategies of Cultural Firms in the Global Era
Valentina Della Corte,Clelia Cascella,Iris Savastano
International Journal of Marketing Studies , 2012, DOI: 10.5539/ijms.v4n6p157
Abstract: The aim of this article is to analyze cultural firms’ evolution, in terms of strategic management, in a global era. As regards the methods, we propose a methodological approach based on the combination of Resource Based Theory and Service Dominant Logic, according to which “customers do not buy goods or services: they buy offerings which render services which create value”. According to this perspective, cultural firms need to manage the strategic interaction between internal/external resources (territorial factors and firm specific resources) and internal/external networks (including customers and trade actors). In this process, the customer becomes a strategic resource: he/she is involved in cultural activities (i.e. edu-tainment) and becomes value co-producer and co-creator. In this optic, cultural activities have to be connected to the territory, in order to be real attractive factors, connected with local identity. This can be the new horizon for cultural firms to become competitive on the global market.

How Many Visitors Should there Be in the City? The Case of Rome
Valentina Feliziani,Marco Miarelli
Review of European Studies , 2012, DOI: 10.5539/res.v4n2p179
Abstract: This paper measures the carrying capacity of Rome. The model used for this analysis is a mathematical model of constrained optimization and linear programming. The function to maximize is the function of income generated by visitors to Rome based on physical constraints such as the number of parking spaces, beds, jobs in catering and social ties as determined through the estimation of two utility functions: residents who earn a living from tourism and residents who do not. To this end, a parameter whose variation indicates the greater or lesser utility of two social groups needed to be included in the constraints. The results of empirical analysis are as follows: the optimal number of tourist hotels and other accommodation is higher than the actual number of city users. In addition, the daily optimal revenue is more than the actual figure, representing a loss of earnings for the city. This analysis also shows the tightest constraints which are those that economic policy should focus on.
HMG CoA reductase inhibition by Simvastatin gets rat β-Myosin heavy chain disappeared: A statin paradox  [PDF]
Laura Trapani, Marco Segatto, Adam Jozwiak, Ewa Swiezewska, Valentina Pallottini
Open Journal of Molecular and Integrative Physiology (OJMIP) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ojmip.2013.31001
Abstract: 3-hydroxy-3methylglutaryl Coenzyme A reductase, the rate limiting enzyme of mevalonate pathway, generates, in addition to cholesterol, a range of products involved in several biological functions: oligoprenyl groups, dolichol and ubiquinone. The latter, in particular, participates in electron transport chain and, in turn, in tissue energy supply. The enzyme is inhibited by statins that, besides lowering cholesterolemia, seem to impair human energy-dependent myocardial functions (e.g. stroke volume, cardiac output, and contractile index). The modulation of heart contractile properties could be explained by the decrease of ventricle ubiquinone content and/or by putative changes in proportion of the different myosin heavy chain isoforms. Since we previously demonstrated that chronic statin treatment modifies myosin heavy chain isoform pattern in skeletal muscle impairing its functional properties, this work was aimed at investigating the effects of statin chronic treatment on both ventricle ubiquinone content and myosin heavy chain isoforms. Our results showed that simvastatin treatment leads to a reduced amount of rat ventricle ubiquinone and to β myosin heavy chain disappearance. Thus, statins which are prescribed to prevent cardiovascular disease, might induce cardiac metabolic and structural modifications whose functional implications on contractility are still to be established and carefully considered.
Strichartz estimates for the Schr?dinger equation for the sublaplacian on complex spheres
Valentina Casarino,Marco M. Peloso
Mathematics , 2012,
Abstract: We study the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation associated with the sublaplacian L on the unit sphere $S^{2n+1}$ in $C^{n+1}$ equipped with its natural CR structure. We first prove Strichartz estimates with fractional loss of derivatives for the solutions of the free Schr\"odinger equation and we then deduce some local in time well-posedness results. Our results are stated in terms of certain Sobolev-type spaces, that measure the regularity of functions on $S^2n+1$ differently according to their spectral localization. Stronger conclusions are obtained for particular classes of solutions, corresponding to initial data whose spectrum is contained in a proper cone of $N^2$.
L^p-summability of Riesz means for the sublaplacian on complex spheres
Valentina Casarino,Marco M. Peloso
Mathematics , 2008, DOI: 10.1112/jlms/jdq067
Abstract: In this paper we study the L^p-convergence of the Riesz means for the sublaplacian on the sphere S^{2n-1} in the complex n-dimensional space C^n. We show that the Riesz means of order delta of a function f converge to f in L^p(S^{2n-1}) when delta>delta(p):=(2n-1)|1\2-1\p|. The index delta(p) improves the one found by Alexopoulos and Lohoue', $2n|1\2-1\p|$, and it coincides with the one found by Mauceri and, with different methods, by Mueller in the case of sublaplacian on the Heisenberg group.

Open Journal of Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases (OJEMD) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ojemd.2014.46017

Chronic diseases are often accompanied by inflammatory and degenerative processes. Estrogens have repeatedly been found to be involved in these processes. Testosterone (T) is the main precursor of estrogen in the brain and T replacement in chronic diseases has become important in recent years, prompting research on new T-conjugated molecules. We recently synthesized three new molecules including unsaturated fatty acid esters: T-linoleate (TL), T-oleate (TO) and T-eicosapentanoate (TEPA). These substances were s.c. administered for 7 days to intact male rats subjected to the formalin test (FT). Three other groups were included as comparisons: NAIVE, receiving no substance, OIL, treated with almond oil (vehicle), and TN, treated with T-undecanoate, a saturated fatty acid. Spontaneous behaviors and pain-induced responses were determined during the FT, hormones (T and dihydrotestosterone, DHT) were determined in blood, while estrogen receptors (ERα and β) were detected at the genomic and proteomic levels in the hippocampus, hypothalamus and spinal cord. In the hippocampus, ERα and ERβ mRNA levels were increased respectively by TN and TL treatments with respect to OIL, whereas the hypothalamus TO and TL
