Abstract: Ecosystems may reflect environmental changes in many respects, from the debilitation of individuals to alterations in community composition. Equally, population parameters may provide reliable indications of environmental changes. Members of the sciaenid fish genus Stellifer are usually very abundant where they occur, often with two or more species living in sympatry. Here, the population dynamics of three Stellifer species from southeastern Brazil were assessed. Sampling was carried out in shallow marine areas of Caraguatatuba Bay, from August 2003 to October 2004. The species evaluated were Stellifer rastrifer (n=3183), S. brasiliensis (n=357) and S. stellifer (n=116). The area under greater continental influence tended to support more, but smaller individuals. Size variations over time were similar among species and negatively correlated with Krel, which showed smooth fluctuations. The general length-frequency distribution was concentrated between 6.0 and 9.0 cm, and the great majority of females did not present mature gonads during the sampling period. The findings support the existence of a stratification by size for these species, indicating that the area is essential for the development of younger fish. Failure to consider these characteristics for the management of similar areas may have serious implications for these environments. Brazilian Journal of Oceanography , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S1679-87592000000200005
Abstract: the temporal variation in molluscan communities was studied in two intertidal substrates composed of sand and rock fragments <300 mm) in s?o sebasti?o channel, brazil. samples were taken between august 1995 and july 1996 in s?o francisco (mainland) and engenho d'água (s?o sebasti?o island) beaches. a pronounced decrease in abundance and diversity of molluscs was associated with changes in the structure of the environment, caused by sea storms in the beginning of the summer (december), and by the increase of waste water discharge in this same period. areas not subjected to such events showed no evident modifications in mollusc fauna structure during the sampling period, and the small oscillations observed were attributed to population recruitment. both natural and human factors may be acting together in determining the community organization in these environments, as is also in typical sandy beaches.
Desafios para a enfermagem no alcance das metas da aten??o primária
Cubas, Marcia Regina;
Revista da Escola de Enfermagem da USP , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0080-62342011000800021
Abstract: the debate is based on the contextualization of the goals presented by the national primary health care plan (plano nacional de aten??o básica), which despite having improved the quality and attempted to solve inequities and vulnerabilities, still has contradictions to overcome. the plan discusses that nursing, in this setting, is included as a member of the family health team and in the coordination of community health agents. the analysis of the challenges to be overcome was divided into three blocks: undergraduate teaching, the working process, and continuous training. the first block presents a panorama of undergraduates studies in brazil and how the primary health care issues are addressed in the curricula and understood by faculty and students; the second examines the views that primary health care nurses have about their working process and the guidelines of the brazilian national health system; finally, the third block points to the challenges related to the different knowledge and practices that must be developed in nursing, in this specific area of practice.

Revista de Indias , 2008,
Abstract: The Independence of Brazil was proclaimed in September 1822 after two years during which constituent deputies elected on both sides of the Atlantic and gathered in Lisbon endeavoured to achieve unification with the former Portuguese metropoli. Due to the failure of these attempts a Constituent Assembly settled in independent Brazil in July 1823. Those two parlamentary experiences —the first to take place in the Portuguese dominions— were strongly influenced by the decisions adopted in Cádiz (1810-1814), and in Madrid (1820-1823), and by the independentist processes developed at the time in Spanish America. This work aims at observing that influence on the decisions adopted in Lisbon and Rio de Janeiro vis-à-vis the autonomical reivindications of several Brazilian provinces. Abstract: Fungi of the genus Fusarium are well known plant pathogens, cause several vascular diseases and are producers of toxins. In vitro assays evaluated the effects of Neem (Azadirachta indica) oil on the diameter of colonies, dry weight, spore production, spore viability and production of Fusaric Acid toxin on Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. medicagenis and Fusarium subglutinans isolates. Effects of Neem oil were analyzed at concentrations 0.25%, 0.5% and 1% in Czapek Yeast Agar medium. The production of Fu- saric acid was determined by Thin Layer Chromatography and quantified by UV spectrophotometry. Neem oil showed inhibitory effects on the isolates tested, although they varied according to type of isolate and oil concentration. Neem oil was efficient in reducing the colonies’ diameter and dry weight in concentration-dependent manner. Neem oil was efficacious at higher concentration in the decrease of sporulation. Spore germination was affected by Neem oil when the spore was grown in Neem-contained medium as when the spore emerged from a culture in a Neem medium. Neem oil decreased and even inhibited the production of Fusaric acid by the assayed isolates. Since these isolates are plant pathogens and producers of Fusaric acid, Neem oil may be introduced as an integral item in the management of host plants.
Structure of molluscan assemblages in sheltered intertidal unconsolidated environments

Brazilian Archives of Biology and Technology , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-89132005000600019
Abstract: the molluscan macrofauna from 13 oceanic sheltered intertidal unconsolidated environments and its relationship with abiotic factors were studied in order to establish the degree of species richness and to understand the role environment plays in structuring such assemblages. four distinct intertidal habitat types were recognized based on molluscan assemblage descriptors (diversity, richness and density) and abiotic characteristics. the mean grain size (in phy units) and the beach slope showed a negative relationship with the diversity, richness and density. coarser sediments were favorable to molluscan fauna in the study areas, contrasting the well-known negative effect of this type of sand on fauna in typical oceanic beaches. the low-tide terraces, typical from tide-dominated areas, and the presence of physical (rocky fragments) and biogenic (gravel) structures, were also associated to the higher values of richness. the high richness in the study area as a whole seemed to be a direct consequence of its environmental heterogeneity, once it was composed by quite distinct habitat types.
