Evaluation of apically extruded debris during endodontic retreatment

Abstract: Introduction: A growing interest to preserve teeth into the mouth by patients resulted in the increasing number of endodontic retreatments, and when these happen, many different types of irritants are extruded through the foramen. Objective: This study analyzed in vitro the amount of debris extruded through the foramen using four instrumentation techniques during endodontic retreatment. Material and methods: Forty mesial-buccal roots of first molars were selected, instrumented with anatomical diameter up to size #30 ISO file and then obturated with gutta-percha and grossman sealer by lateral condensation. After, they were separated and randomly allocated into four groups with 10 teeth each for the endodontic retreatment procedure: G1 – conventional technique + solvent, G2 – conventional technique without solvent, G3 – ProTaper retreatment + solvent, G4 – ProTaper retreatment without solvent. In all groups, gutta-percha in the coronal portion was removed by using size 1-3 Gates Glidden drills. All teeth were irrigated with distilled water. The debris extruded through the foramen were collected and weighed by an analytical balance. Results: Group 4 had the lowest average for material extrusion through the foramen followed by groups 2, 3 and 1. When Tukey test for statistical analysis was applied, no significant difference among groups were found (p = 0.5664). Conclusion: We conclude that all instrumentation techniques used in this study produced debris which goes beyond the foramen.
Ex vivo evaluation of coronal and apical microbial leakage of root canal - Filled with gutta-percha or Resilon/Epiphany root canal filling material

Abstract: Objective: This ex vivo study compared coronal and apical microleakage of root canals filled with Resilon/Epiphany (RE) or gutta-percha/Grossman sealer (GP), using either lateral condensation (LC) or System B (SB) technique. Materials and Methods: Specimens in eight experimental groups were obturated using the following materials and techniques: Groups 1 and 3 - GP and LC; groups 2 and 4 - GP and SB; groups 5 and 7 - RE and LC; groups 6 and 8 - RE and SB. Apical and coronal leakages were tested using bacterial methods. For coronal analysis, the number of days required for complete contamination of the root canals was recorded according to observation of the brain heart infusion broth turbidity for 15 weeks. For apical analysis, the teeth were cleaved and the leakage was measured at 30 days. Data were collected for each sample and analyzed statistically with the Chi-square and ANOVA tests. Results: Leakage was found in all groups. The difference between filling materials, obturation techniques, and median time of leakage was not statistically significant for coronal ( P=0.847) and apical ( P=0.5789) leakages. Conclusion: There were no differences between the different filling materials (gutta-percha/Grossman sealer and Resilon/Epiphany) and obturation techniques (lateral condensation and system B technique) in coronal or apical leakages.

Abstract: the present article uses the dynamic factor model of stock and watson to construct a coincident index with a clear statistical foundation able to represent the level of activity of the processing industry of the state of rio grande do sul. in addition to this linear model, we also employ a regime switching methodology in order to determine the asymmetry of the business cycle in the industry on a statewide basis, pointing out periods of economic growth and stagnation in this sector. this new indicator is compared with the industrial performance index developed by the federation of the industries of the state of rio grande do sul (fiergs). the results show that both linear and nonlinear models estimate components that are highly correlated, such as the weighted average index currently calculated by fiergs.
Free-hand placement of high thoracic pedicle screws with the aid of fluoroscopy: evaluation of positioning by CT scans in a four-year consecutive series

Abstract: objective: to evaluate the feasibility, safety and accuracy of pedicle screw placement in the upper thoracic spine using the free-hand technique with the aid of fluoroscopy; to analyze the methods used to verify correct screw positioning intra and postoperatively. method: all patients with instability of the cervicothoracic or upper thoracic spine and at least one screw placed in the segment t1-t6 as part of a posterior construct entered the study. only c-arm intraoperative fluoroscopy was used to guide screw placement. results: we obtained excellent positioning in 98.07% of the screws. ct scans precisely demonstrated pedicle wall and anterolateral body violations. there was no hardware failure, no neurological or vascular injury and no loss of alignment during the follow-up period. conclusion: pedicle screws can be safely placed in the upper thoracic spine when strict technical principles are followed. only a ct scan can precisely demonstrate vertebral body and medial pedicle cortical violations.

Abstract: this paper uses a quasi-maximum likelihood procedure to estimate the non-stationary stochastic volatility for the par bonds of four latin american countries: brazil, argentina, mexico and venezuela. the aim is to investigate the possible presence of co-movements in volatility across countries. the estimation period goes from august 1994 to september 1999, including, therefore, the asian and russian crises. the estimated volatility for the univariate model does not show any slope and is highly persistent. the multivariate model gives a good fit to the data and shows that there is common movement.

Abstract: presacral tumors are relatively uncommon. we report a case of presacral epidermal cyst in a 29-years-old female, which was completely extirpated through a posterior approach ,whitout removal of the coccyx. histological examination showed a cyst lined by keratinized stratified squamous epithelium.
Variational Formulations Yielding High-Order Finite-Element Solutions in Smooth Domains without Curved Elements  [PDF]

Abstract: One of the reasons for the great success of the finite element method is its versatility to deal with different types of geometries. This is particularly true of problems posed in curved domains. Nevertheless it is well-known that, for standard variational formulations, the optimal approximation properties known to hold for polytopic domains are lost, if meshes consisting of ordinary elements are still used in the case of curved domains. That is why method’s isoparametric version for meshes consisting of curved triangles or tetrahedra has been widely employed, especially in case Dirichlet boundary conditions are prescribed all over a curved boundary. However, besides geometric inconveniences, the isoparametric technique helplessly requires the manipulation of rational functions and the use of numerical integration. In this work we consider a simple alternative that bypasses these drawbacks, without eroding qualitative approximation properties. More specifically we work with a variational formulation leading to high order finite element methods based only on polynomial algebra, since they do not require the use of curved elements. Application of the new approach to Lagrange methods of arbitrary order illustrates its potential to take the best advantage of finite-element discretizations in the solution of wide classes of problems posed in curved domains.
Métodos de estima??o de parametros em modelo de covariancia com erro na covariável

Abstract: the present paper approaches the covariance analysis model with one factor and measurement error in the covariate. accuracy and precision of two estimators suggested in the literature were evaluated through data simulation, for estimating parameters of a regression model with measurement error. so called plug-in method estimates the real value based on the observed ones and then uses the common function for estimating the desired parameter. the other estimator, known as bias smoother, only performs a bias correction on the usual estimator by computing a factor. behavior of both estimators was studied under different residual distributions, goodness of fit and sample sizes. it is worth noting that, in covariance analysis model, the high the sample size, the better for accuracy and precision. results suggest that the plug-in estimator presented the best performance both for accuracy and precision under normality, for the distinct evaluated situations. when the estimators had been evaluated in the model of ancova with the residues distributed for gamma, the same ones had gotten the worse performance in relation when they were evaluated by the others distributions.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to select common bean families resistant to colletotrichum lindemuthianum and phaeoisariopsis griseola and, also, with superior agronomical traits. families used were obtained from crosses of h91 lineage, bearer of three alleles resistant to anthracnose, and f2;5 families derived from the cultivar jalo eep 558, which is resistant to angular leaf spot. square lattice design was used in all experiments. initially the f2:3 families (144) were evaluated in the winter of 2004, in lavras county, mg, brazil, based on grain type. eighty families (f2:4) were selected and evaluated with the check brsmg talism?, in the wet periods of 2004/2005, in the same place. considering grain type, anthracnose and angular leaf spot resistances, 48 families (f2:5) were selected and evaluated in the dry period of 2005, in two places, lavras and lambari, mg. these 48 families were also inoculated with the 2047, 73 and 1545 races of c. lindemuthianum, in order to verify the presence of alleles of resitance co-42, co-5 and co-7, respectively. genotypes with anthracnose resistance were identified in most families, four of which are outstanding for their ideal 'carioca'-like grain, with upright plant, high grain yield and resistance to angular leaf spot.

Abstract: this experiment was made to evaluate the influence of the irrigation with saline water on growth and production of sunflower (híbrido h251), besides monitoring the evolution of some chemical attributes of the soil along its cycle. the experimental design used was the randomized blocks with six treatments and five replications. the treatments consisted of six different irrigation strategies, five of them with use of saline water. the growth evaluations (plant height, stem diameter and leaf number) were made at 20; 40; 60; 80; 100 days after sowing (das). the harvest occurred at 100 das, then the capitulum diameter was measured and the weight of 1000 achenes, as well as its productivity, were determined. the soil samples were collected on the same dates of the growth evaluations at the layers of 0-0.10; 0.10-0.30; 0.30-0.50 m. the evaluated soil attributes were na+, ec and ph, besides of the ratios na+/ca2+ and na+/mg2+. the sunflower appeared to be tolerant to the salinity of the irrigation water, what means it could be cultivated normally and still have a good production even when the water ec reaches up to 3.53 ds m-1. however, when using a medium/high ec water, it's needed to adopt some practices to control the salinization/sodification of the soil. the tolerance of the sunflower to salinity was not dependent of the development phase. overall, the chemical attributes of the soil increased and stabilized from the middle of the cycle on.
