Abstract:
The imbalance between oxidant molecules and antioxidant agents is characterized as oxidative stress (OS) and may lead to severe damage to the organism. In contrast, the physical training of aerobic and resistive character promotes increases of the antioxidant response, resulting in a balance and/or minimizing damage. Therefore, the objective of the study is to verify the effect of aerobic training, resistive training and concurrent training on oxidative stress of Wistar rats. Methods: To perform the experiment, 40 Wistar rats were subjected to eight weeks of training. The animals were distributed into 4 different groups: control, aerobic, resistive and concurrent (combination of aerobic and resistive protocols in the same section) an h/day, five days/week, for eight weeks. At the end of the experimental period: the antioxidant enzymes (catalase, glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase), biomarkers of oxidative stress (TBARs and H2O2) as well as the activity of reduced and oxidized glutathione were analyzed. Results: Regarding the markers, TBARs and H2O2 trainings were not effective in promoting significant reduction. In contrast, the three training protocols caused an increase in SOD and GSH-GPx enzymes. Conclusion: Therefore, we concluded that both training protocols promoted benefit to the organism, because they caused the increase of antioxidant enzymes without disturbance in the pro-oxidant markers.

Abstract: The present study examined occurrences of ectoparasites and identified them on dogs in rural regions in Brazil, and assessed the influence of climate on these parasites. Ectoparasites were randomly collected from 194 dogs living on farms located in Lavras (n = 92) and Nanuque (n = 102) during the dry season. During the subsequent rainy season, the same dogs in Lavras (n = 71) and Nanuque (n = 66) were resampled. During the experiment, fleas, ticks, lice and fly larvae were collected. The flea species Ctenocephalides felis was the most common ectoparasite collected from these dogs. The main tick species that infested the dogs in rural areas of Nanuque and Lavras was Amblyomma cajennense. In Lavras, the dogs had high levels of flea infestation (80.4 and 88.7% in the dry and rainy seasons, respectively) and low levels of tick infestation (19.6 and 28.2% in the dry and rainy seasons, respectively), without any significant differences in infestation rates between the seasons. In Nanuque, moderate levels of flea infestation (68.6 and 43.9% in the dry and rainy seasons, respectively) and A. cajennense (65.7 and 47.0% in the dry and rainy seasons, respectively) were observed, with significantly lower prevalence in the rainy season (p < 0.05). The presence of ectoparasites was evident at both times of the year, but the different temperatures may have influenced the occurrences of parasites in Lavras and Nanuque.

Abstract: This study aimed to analyze the possible metabolic disturbances caused by creatine supplementation on aerobic capacity of rats, inferred by the maximal lactate steady state. Forty male Wistar rats (90 days old) were distributed into two groups for eight weeks: trained group (T): rats that were submitted to a training protocol, and supplemented-trained group (TCr): rats that were submitted to a training protocol and received balanced diet supplemented with 2% creatine. The blood lactate concentrations equivalent to maximal lactate steady state during treadmill running were analyzed at the beginning and also at the end of the experiment. At the end of the experiment were done comparing the test results MLSS between the two groups. At the beginning of the experiment, prior to groups division, the majority of animals obtained MLSS at a speed of26 m/min, blood lactate concentration of 3.79 ± 0.76 mmol/L. At the end of the experiment, most of trained rats in T presented MLSS at the speed of28 m/min, blood lactate concentration of 3.37 ± 0.68 mmol/L. Most TCr had MLSS at the speed of28 m/min, blood lactate concentration of 3.52 ± 0.69 mmol/L. We conclude that creatine supplementation was not the cause of the improvement in the aerobic capacity of rats in the tread-mill exercise.

Abstract: maghemite (g-fe2o3) is the most usually found ferrimagnetic oxide in red basalt-derived soils. the variable degrees of ionic substitution of fe3+ for different metals (e.g. ti4+, al3+, mg2+, zn2+, and mn2+) and non-metals in the maghemite structure influence some cristallochemical features of this iron oxide. in this study, synthetic zn-substituted maghemites were prepared by co-precipitation in alkaline aqueous media of feso4.7h2o with increasing amounts of znso4.7h2o to obtain the following sequence of fe3+ for zn2+ substitutions: 0.0, 0.025, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, and 0.30 mol mol-1. the objective of this work was to evaluate the cristallochemical alterations of synthetic zn-substituted maghemites. the dark black synthetic precipitated material was heated to 250 °c during 4 h forming a brownish maghemite that was characterized by chemical analysis as well as x ray diffraction (xrd), specific surface area and mass-specific magnetic susceptibility. the isomorphic substitution levels observed were of 0.0013, 0.0297, 0.0590, 0.1145, 0.1764, 0.2292 and 0.3404 mol mol-1, with the formation of a series of maghemites from fe2zn0o3 to fe(1.49)zn(0.770)o3 . the increase in fe3+ for zn2+ substitution, [zn mol mol-1] increased the dimension a0 of the cubic unit cells of the studied maghemites according to the regression equation: a0 = 0.8343 + 0.02591zn (r2 = 0.98). on the other hand, the mean crystallite dimension and mass-specific magnetic susceptibility of the studied maghemites decreased with increasing isomorphic substitution.

Abstract: Thalassemia is a type of hereditary anemia that predominantly affects individuals born in or descendents of countries bathed by the Mediterranean Sea, such as Italy and Greece. Also known as Cooley’s anemia and Mediterranean anemia, the disease causes alterations in hemoglobin formation and malformations of the cranium, long bones, maxilla and mandible. It presents two distinct clinical conditions: one severe, called “major” thalassemia, and the other mild, denominated “minor” thassalemia. Hematologic exam diagnoses the two forms of the disease. Its clinical and radiographic manifestations include hepatosplenomegalia, lymphadenopathy, augmented mandible, increase in medullary spaces, thick bone trabeculae and in lower quantity, resembling a “spider web”, displacement of the mandibular canal, with loss of detail of its superior and inferior corticals and a radiographic aspect of “hair standing on end” at the surface of the cranium. Some of these manifestations are so characteristic and capable of being observed in radiographs that they form part of the dentist’s routine. This case report discusses the alterations observed in the panoramic radiograph of a patient with thalassemia diagnosed by means of hematologic exam.

Neuroscience & Medicine (NM) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/nm.2011.24043
Abstract: We developed a psychophysical paradigm for the clinical assessment of the contrast sensitivity (CS) mediated by the ON- and OFF-systems of the Magnocellular and Parvocellular pathways. We designed a stimulus considering two dimensions: two spatial frequencies (0.5 and 4.5 cpd) and two temporal rates of flicker (33 ms and 1500 ms). To evidence the ON- and OFF responses, the CS was measured for two polarities of light with luminance changes of 0.6 dB steps above and below the medium luminance grey background. We tested 38 healthy volunteers. The results shows that Magnocellular contrast sensitivity was higher than Parvocellular for the 33 ms flickering stimulus and the Parvocellular contrast sensitivity was higher than Magnocellular for 1500 ms stimuli. The reliability of the test was checked and confirmed. We concluded that the test performs a rapid measurement of the CS mediated by the ON and OFF systems of Magnocellular and Parvocellular pathways. It is useful in clinical protocols due to its high sensitivity and good reliability.
