PLOS ONE , 2009, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0006229
Abstract: Micro RNAs (miRNAs) are a class of small, non-coding RNA species that play critical roles throughout cellular development and regulation. miRNA expression patterns taken from various tissue types often point to the cellular lineage of an individual tissue type, thereby being a more invariant hallmark of tissue type. Recent work has shown that these miRNA expression patterns can be used to classify tumor cells, and that this classification can be more accurate than the classification achieved by using messenger RNA gene expression patterns. One aspect of miRNA biogenesis that makes them particularly attractive as a biomarker is the fact that they are maintained in a protected state in serum and plasma, thus allowing the detection of miRNA expression patterns directly from serum. This study is focused on the evaluation of miRNA expression patterns in human serum for five types of human cancer, prostate, colon, ovarian, breast and lung, using a pan-human microRNA, high density microarray. This microarray platform enables the simultaneous analysis of all human microRNAs by either fluorescent or electrochemical signals, and can be easily redesigned to include newly identified miRNAs. We show that sufficient miRNAs are present in one milliliter of serum to detect miRNA expression patterns, without the need for amplification techniques. In addition, we are able to use these expression patterns to correctly discriminate between normal and cancer patient samples.
On the decay rate of solutions of non-autonomous differential systems
Tomas Caraballo
Electronic Journal of Differential Equations , 2001,
Abstract: Some results on the asymptotic behaviour of solutions of differential equations concerning general decay rate are proved. We prove general criteria on the exponential, polynomial, and more general decay properties of solutions by using suitable Lyapunov's functions. We also present a detailed analysis of the perturbed linear and nonlinear differential systems. The theory is illustrated with several examples.
Overview of Electrochemical DNA Biosensors: New Approaches to Detect the Expression of Life

Sensors , 2009, DOI: 10.3390/s90403122
Abstract: DNA microarrays are an important tool with a variety of applications in gene expression studies, genotyping, pharmacogenomics, pathogen classification, drug discovery, sequencing and molecular diagnostics. They are having a strong impact in medical diagnostics for cancer, toxicology and infectious disease applications. A series of papers have been published describing DNA biochips as alternative to conventional microarray platforms to facilitate and ameliorate the signal readout. In this review, we will consider the different methods proposed for biochip construction, focusing on electrochemical detection of DNA. We also introduce a novel single-stranded DNA platform performing high-throughput SNP detection and gene expression profiling.

Abstract: objective: to evaluate the surgical results in a group of patients with epilepsy associated with cortical development malformations (cdm). method: a retrospective study in 150 patients of a series of 570 patients (26.3%) who have undergone surgery for intractable epilepsy with a diagnosis of cdm, since 1988. clinical features, scalp eeg, video eeg, ct scan, mri and neuropsychological evaluation were assessed. population: males: 86 patients, females: 64; mean age, children: 6.7 years (range: 0,5-18.9) and adults: 31.3 years (range: 19-59); mean evolution of epilepsy, children: 4.9 years (range: 1mo-17 yr.), adults: 13.8 years (range: 2mo-50 yr.). clinical manifestations: cps, absences, tonic crises, automatisms and versive crises, cps, transitory anopsia, drop attacks and startle epilepsy, scotoma, masticatory automatisms, clonic crises, photopsia, eye deviation and head attacks. imaging: ct scan was normal in 5, and mri was performed since 1996. twenty of 150 (13.3%) required chronic intracranial electrodes implantation. surgical procedures: resectives: lesionectomies 63 (wide lesionectomy, 17 and + mst, 5), standard anterior temporal lobectomies (satl) 37, anteromesial resections (spencer) 9, corticectomies 11(+mst, 1),amigdalo-hippocampectomies 3, anatomic hemispherectomy 1, lobectomy 1 and polectomies 4; disconnecting procedures: functional hemispherectomies (fh) 10, hemispherotomy 4, hemi-hemispherectomy 1, multiple subpial transection (mst) 1 and 2 callosotomies. other procedures: vagus nerve stimulator (vns) 1, as the first procedure, and radiosurgery 1. intra-op ecog was performed in 54 patients, ssep were in 4 and cortical stimulation in 2. pathological findings: fcd 86 (includes 23 dual pathology, 2 "triple pathology", 5 "associated pathologies", 4 tms + abnormal temporal mesial structures and 3 acquired fcd), dnts 33, tuberous sclerosis 12, hemimegalencephaly 10 and 5 hamartomas. results according to the engel classification: class i: 113 (75.3%), class ii

Los Topic Maps y su relación con las redes sociales
Caraballo Pérez,Yeter;
ACIMED , 2007,
Abstract: some theoretical considerations on the increase of specifications such as xml topic maps are made. the main definitions and characteristics of topic maps are exposed. the aspects that relate topic maps to the social networks are identified through the advances they offer in connection with management knowledge and the semantic web consolidation.
La gestión de contenidos en portales Web
Caraballo Pérez,Yeter;
ACIMED , 2007,
Abstract: some considerations on the present status of the web portal content management, as well as the relation and importance in the organization, and its implementation starting from the free software tools, are presented. the competences of the information professional to develop this management work in the era of the information society are approached. it is concluded that the web content management is one of the most important functions of the information professional. in the internet and web portal contexts, the task of these professional is to manage the information so that the adequate users receive it properly and in due time.
La idealización del amor y la mujer en La vorágine
Ortiz Caraballo,Carlos Daniel;
Folios , 2008,
Abstract: this essay is a sociocritic analysis of the novel la vorágine (1924), written by josé eustasio rivera (neiva, 1888-new york, 1928). its objective is to elucidate one of the existent axiological position presented in this literary work, specifically, the romantic one (girard, 1963). the reading of the text is organized in two parts: first, the idealization of love, where it is established the construction of the romantic position taken in terms of love, the socioeconomic values of modernity and capitalism, taking into account the hero of the novel and the idealization of a woman, according to the women characters and their ideological voice.
La andragogía en la educación superior
Caraballo Colmenares,Rosana;
Investigación y Postgrado , 2007,
Abstract: the necessities of the current society of knowledge and information have remarkably challenged the mainstream conception of thinking that affirms that there is an age to learn and another one, in which knowledge is applied. the term andragogy is widely accepted in the field of education for adults. as a formal concept, it includes different ideas for a theory of learning just for adults. the experimental university simón rodríguez (unesr) is the pioneer institution in the application of the andragogic discipline; its interest lies on the necessity of concentrating in the adult learning process. through this research conducted, the intention was to know the quality of the performance of the facilitator of unesr, regarding the andragogic postulates assumed by the institution. the population was comprised by facilitators from núcleo palo verde, and from this population an intentional sample was taken. the results showed the following tendencies: a) facilitators have not internalized the andragogic postulates assumed by the institution (unesr), so that these postulates can actually be applied to the education for adults.
Modelo de explotación óptima de la tierra para uso agrícola
Caraballo,Leonardo Javier;
Agroalimentaria , 2002,
Abstract: the present work attempts to establish general guidelines for resolving and analyzing an optimum extraction economic model for environmental resources, exemplified in the case of soils. to this end, the postulates of optimum control theory and of natural resource economy, were employed in order to attempt to find the relationship between soil erosion and the loss of fertility and agricultural productivity. the formulation carried out permits determining optimum levels of production through solving the problem of present value on net economic returns for producers on a finite time line, considering the end value of the soil.
