Models for Master-Slave Clock Distribution Networks with Third-Order Phase-Locked Loops
José Roberto Castilho Piqueira,Marcela de Carvalho Freschi
Mathematical Problems in Engineering , 2007, DOI: 10.1155/2007/18609
Abstract: The purpose of this work is to study the processing and transmission of clock signals in networks of geographically distributed nodes, in order to derive conditions for frequency and phase synchronization between the nodes. The focus is on the master-slave architecture, which presents a priority scheme of clock distribution. One-way master-slave (OWMS ) and two-way master-slave (TWMS) chains are studied, considering that the slave nodes are third-order phase-locked loops (PLLs). Third-order PLLs are chosen to improve the transient response but, if their parameters are not well adjusted, stability problems and chaotic behaviors appear, restricting the lock-in range of the network. Lock-in range for third-order PLLs with Sallen-Key filter is determined and it is verified whether this range is reduced when the PLLs are connected to a network. Numerical experiments show how chain size changes the lock-in ranges and the acquisition times.
Comparison of DNA-extraction methods and Selective Enrichment broths on the detection of Salmonella Typhimurium in swine feces by polymerase chain reaction (PCR)
Freschi, Carla Roberta;Carvalho, Luiz Fernando de Oliveira e Silva;Oliveira, Celso José Bruno de;
Brazilian Journal of Microbiology , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-83822005000400011
Abstract: the aim of this study was to compare different dna-extraction methods and selective enrichment broths for their effectiveness to detect salmonella typhimurium in artificially inoculated swine feces samples (100 cfu/g) by polymerase chain reaction. after enrichment in rappaport-vassiliadis, selenite cystine or müller-kauffmann tetrathionate, aliquots were used for dna extraction by three different methods: boiling-centrifugation, phenol-chloroform and salting-out. aliquots of extracted dna were then used as template in pcr. the selective enrichment broths had no effect on the efficiency of pcr when boiling-centrifugation and salting-out were used. on the other hand, phenol-chloroform was superior (p<0.05) when combined to rappaport-vassiliadis. considering cost and efficiency parameters, we encourage the use of müller-kauffmann tetrathionate broth in combination with boiling-centrifugation dna-extraction procedure.

Cancer risk and preventive behavior: persuasion as an intervention strategy
Tonani, Marcela;Carvalho, Emilia Campos de;
Revista Latino-Americana de Enfermagem , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-11692008000500011
Abstract: the effectiveness of interventions for health promotion, protection, and early diagnosis may include the process of persuasion employed. this study aims to evaluate the risk level of developing cancer, considering the pertinent risk factors, and the presence of persuasion and characteristics in communication regarding cancer prevention and early detection. it is an observational study, conducted among 110 inhabitants of a neighborhood in ribeirao preto, sao paulo, brazil. it was confirmed that there are high risks for colon/rectum, cervical, and endometrial cancer; and moderate risks for the above as well as lung and breast cancer. in terms of persuasion, it was observed that cancer information was spread but not sustained for long periods. moreover, there was no reinforcement. in view of cancer risk and the identified preventive behaviors, persuasion is considered a useful strategy to reduce these risks, as well as to encourage and sustain preventive behaviors, since it indicates routes to be followed.

American Journal of Plant Sciences (AJPS) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/ajps.2015.612192
Abstract: Insects of the genus Sitophilus are among the most destructive pests in rice storage, and the best strategy to control it is to use resistant genotypes. In this study, 26 upland rice elite lines were evaluated for Sitophilus weevil reaction on grain weight. The seeds were placed in plastic recipients stored in a room with temperature and lightning simulating a warehouse environment. The number of living weevils and the grain weight were obtained in two evaluations, one 35 days after storage, and the other 35 days after infestation. The lines differed statistically for number of living weevils and for grain weight in both evaluations. The correlations between these two characters were -?0.99 and -?0.47 for the first and the second evaluation (P < 0.05), respectively. The lines BRS Pepita, AB 112089 and AB 112090 were the most susceptible. Seventeen of the twenty-six elite lines were resistant in both evaluations and could be successfully used in upland rice breeding programs.

Abstract: the pressures tempted by the exigencies from the competitive sport lead many athletes to exceed the limits of their physical and psychological capacity, causing the manifestation of overtraining syndrome. the purpose of this review article is to discuss, through the original material, the validation process of the profile of mood states-adolescents (poms-a) for use with adults(1). this instrument was developed to serve as a brief measure of mood states among adolescents and adult populations, and had already demonstrated, in recent researches, effectiveness in the diagnosis of these altered states by intensive training. the poms-a was administered to adult athletes prior to competition, adult student athletes, adolescent athletes prior to competition, and adolescent students. a subset of adult student athletes was used to test the criterion validity of the poms-a. confirmatory factor analysis provided support for the factorial validity of 24-item, six-factor model using both independent and multi-sample analyses. relationships between poms-a scores and previously validated measures, that were consistent with theoretical predictions, supported the criterion validity. evidences were found in support of the psychometric integrity of the poms-a when extended from adolescent to adult populations. it is suggested that the poms-a is an appropriate tool with which mood profiles will be tested, besides the brevity of the test facilitates data collection in research environments. subsequent studies aim the validation and applicability of the instrument brums (current name of the poms-a) in detection of overtraining syndrome in brazilian athletes, for what already exists authorization by the authors terry, lane and fogarty(1).
