Conducting research about sensitive subjects: The case of homeless youth [Dirigiendo la investigación acerca de asuntos sensibles: el caso de la juventud sin casa ni hogar]

Universitas Psychologica , 2012,
Abstract: There is growing interest and importance in addressing the logistical and ethical challenges of conducting research with disenfranchised populations, including homeless and working street youth. Drawing upon established international standards on human rights, we review legal and ethical codes for research on disenfranchised populations established by national and international research and professional organizations. Then we explore how university-based researchers can apply these standards to children and adolescents growing up in situations characterized by physical and psycho- logical neglect, lack of adult supervision, limited protection from local law enforcement, and drug use and violence. We reflect upon on our experi- ences in conducting research with vulnerable Brazilian youth to illustrate the challenges of implementing ethical guidelines in real-world situations and propose possible solutions to ethical dilemmas encountered in the field.
Problem Behavior Theory: An Examination of the Behavior Structure System in Latino and non-Latino College Students

Retrospective self-reported weight changes during childhood and adolescence are not good predictors of metabolic syndrome risk factors in Mexican young adults  [PDF]

Open Journal of Preventive Medicine (OJPM) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ojpm.2013.38064
Abstract:

The purpose of the study was to examine whether retrospective self-reported weight changes during childhood and adolescence were associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS) risk factors in Mexican young adults. Mexican college applicants to the Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí, Mexico, 18 to 25 years old (n = 4187) who had applied for the 2009 academic year were included in the study. Participants underwent a health screening—anthropometrics and blood drawn—and completed a questionnaire. Five major weight change categories were defined based on self-reported weight during childhood and adolescence: consistently normal, consistently underweight, consistently overweight/ obese, weight gain, and weight loss. Most participants self-reported being normal weight during childhood (58.7%) and adolescence (58.3%). Only a small proportion reported being overweight or obese during childhood (10.1%) or adolescence (15.9%). Weight change patterns during childhood and adolescence were marked by overall stability: 40.1% of participants were consistently normal, 15.6% underweight and 3.6% overweight/obese. Among those whose weight changed, 25.0% gained weight and 15.7% lost weight. In regression analyses, weight change categories based on self-reported weight statuses during childhood and adolescence were not associated with current metabolic syndrome risk factors after controlling for measured current BMI. Studies addressing the association between weight gains in early life with metabolic syndrome outcomes in early adulthood should not rely on recalled weight status during early life alone.

Adolescentes em situa??o de vulnerabilidade social e o continuum risco-prote??o
ARAUJO DE MORAIS,NORMANDA; RAFFAELLI,MARCELA; KOLLER,SíLVIA HELENA;
Avances en Psicología Latinoamericana , 2012,
Abstract: a multiple case study design was applied to data collected through ecological engagement in developmental contexts of adolescents in socially vulnerable situations. four adolescents were selected from a larger study of 98 brazilian adolescents in two distinct groups (g1 - youth in street situations and g2 - impoverished youth living with their families). the selected adolescents had the highest and lowest adjustment scores in their respective groups. quantitative data and observational field notes were used to describe the four youth on indicators of adjustment and risk and protective factors. results indicated points of convergence and divergence between the cases and the existence of a continuum of social vulnerability that was strongly related to how risk and protective factors interact in the life of each adolescent, rather than being strongly related to living situation (street or families).

Universitas Psychologica , 2012,

Universitas Psychologica , 2010,
Abstract: this study aimed to characterize different profiles of children and adolescents (11-18 years old), living in situations of social vulnerability (one group of street children and adolescents - g1 and one group living with their families - g2). g1 and g2 (n = 98) were characterized according to risk (stressful events), and adjustment (physical health symptoms, drug use, sexual risk taking behavior, suicidal behavior and positive/negative affect and comparative analysis between the groups was conducted. the association of stressful events and social support networks with maladjustment was tested. results showed that g1 experienced a larger number of stressful events and lower indicators of adjustment (with the exception of positive affect) than g2. only the number of stressful events was independently associated with maladjustment.
Imagem e self em Plotino e Jung: confluências
Raffaelli, Rafael;
Estudos de Psicologia (Campinas) , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-166X2002000100003
Abstract: some of the theoretical confluences between plotino and jung are analyzed, based on the concepts of image and self. plotinus is considered as the discoverer of the unconscious and his ideas about the soul are a basic reference for the history of psychology and psychoanalysis. although it is not habitually included among jung's theoretical influences, the plotinian phylosophy possesses several points in common with analytical psychology. the concept of image, of capital importance for the jungian theory, is also highly important in plotinus, which proposes a psychology of the imaginary, that is, a study of the soul through the images. in relation to the concept of self, jung himself highlights plotinus' insights on that field. jung also attributes to plotinus the first formulation of the concept of unus mundus (united world).
Husserl e a psicologia
Raffaelli, Rafael;
Estudos de Psicologia (Natal) , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-294X2004000200002
Abstract: the aim of this study is to clarify the relation between husserl's phenomenology and psychology. although husserl pointed out a similarity between phenomenology and psychology, he did not suppose an identity between the two disciplines. psychology is a science of facts and phenomenology is the basis to understand the sense of those facts. psychology may be considered as an autonomous science that studies the psyche through the behavior. but the interpretation of the signification that underlies the behavior can only be made by eidetic psychology. eidetic psychology, based on the phenomenology, would conduct the depuration of the naturalism that impregnates empirical psychology. according to husserl, psychology does not need methodological advices from the sciences of nature and must find his own way to understand the sense of the human act. thus, what psychology needs is a "plus ultra" connecting the psychological investigation with the transcendental.
