Abstract: the ecological plasticity observed in plants that inhabit different vegetation formations is often accompanied by morphological variations, the leaf being the vegetative organ with the greatest structural variation. in view of this concept, the leaf anatomy of five species of polygala l. occurring in restinga (sandy coastal plain) and cerrado (savanna) areas in the state of s?o paulo were analyzed in order to inventory their principal characters and describe their leaf structure, to thus compare them and assess the possibility of verifying structural patterns common to the ecological conditions of both vegetation formations. the species studied were: p. cyparissias a.st.-hil. & moq., p. laureola a.st.-hil. & moq., p. paniculata l. found in restinga, and p. angulata dc. and p. violacea aubl. emend. marques occurring in campo cerrado and cerrad?o margin areas, respectively. the middle region of the leaf blade and petiole proximal region of each leaf were processed following the usual techniques for scanning electron and light microscopy. the results show two structural patterns common to the species from the restinga and cerrado area formations: mesomorphic characteristics are observed in p. laureola, p. paniculata, and p. violacea, and xeromorphic in p. cyparissias and p. angulata.

Abstract: Phosphate fertilizers when applied to the soil, besides being harvested by the crops, promote a residual effect that can be offered to subsequent crops. The objective of this research was to evaluate the residual effect of phosphate fertilization applied to maize cultivation on the successor crop, cowpea, in the Cerrado region in Maranhao. The research was carried out in the experimental area of Federal University of Maranhao (UFMA), located in the city of Chapadinha, MA (3°44'30\"S, 43°21'37''W). The experimental design was in randomized blocks, with six treatments and four replications. The treatments were composed of the following residual P doses: 0, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100 kg·ha-1 of P2O5. The cultivation of cowpea (cultivar BRS guariba) was sown at a spacing of 1.0 × 0.20 m. The cowpea proved to be efficient in the use of residual phosphate fertilization, since it promoted grain yield close to the national average. The cultivation of cowpea in previously cultivated areas is feasible, in order to take advantage of the residual phosphate fertilization in the Cerrado of East of Maranhao. The phosphorus dose applied in the predecessor crop corresponding to 80 kg·ha-1 of P2O5 promoted higher grain yield (393.44 Mg·ha-1) and a greater profit margin (US $326.26). Thus, it is feasible to grow cowpea in previously cultivated areas, in order to take advantage of residual phosphate fertilization.

Abstract: In order to analize the effect of three stocking den-sities on the water quality in tambaqui rearing (Colossoma macropomum, CUVIER, 1818) during the fingerling II re-aring in fertilized ponds. 3,120 fingerlings with initial wei-ght of 1.41 ± 0.49 g were stocked in three densities: 33, 43 and 53 fingerlings/m2. These fingerlings were fed with a commercial ration, three times on day, ad libitum. The following parameters were analyzed: dissolved oxygen, total alkalinity, non-ionized ammonia and nitrite, using a chemical kit to water analyze and Secchi′s Disk to transparency. The data were analyzed in completely randomized desing in factorial diagram 3x5, with three stocking densities and five analyses. The hidrological variables studied stayied according with the standard of a good development of tambaqui in fertilized ponds, with exception of oxygen, that sowed values lower than literature regards, but this values didn’t damage the fish development. Key-words: Fingerling, hidrological variables, intensive system.

Abstract: The experiment evaluated the stocking density of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fingerling in netcages for 43 days. Fifteen 180L netcages were used as experiment units, in a pond with 80% water renovation. The tested stocking densities were 700 fingerlings/m3; 1,000 fingerlings/m3 and 1,300 fingerlings/m3. The mean initial weight of the fingerlings was 4.77 ± 0.29 g. The following parameters were analyzed: mortality rate; final weight; final length; final biomass; feed conversion rate; weight gain; daily weight gain; protein efficiency rate; specific growth rate and condition factor. Variance analyzes and Tukey test at 5% were applied to compare the different treatments. Treatment with greater stocking density differed significantly from treatment with lower density regarding final weight, final biomass, weight gain, daily weight gain and specific growth rate. The other parameters did not present significant differences among the treatments (p>0.05). Under these experimental conditions, the best stocking densities for cages were 1,000 to 1,300 fingerlings/m3.

Abstract: humic acids (ha) directly stimulate several physiological processes that promote plant growth, particularly of the root system. knowledge about the chemical nature and the role of ha in the effects observed under biofertilization and biostimulation is essential to develop ha-based biological resources. the aim of this study was to evaluate a possible relationship between the distribution of the apparent molecular weight of ha isolated from vermicompost and the response in root growth promotion. ha sub-fractions were obtained through preparative chromatography by size exclusion using sephadex gel g-50 gel (cge). the preparative process was validated by high-performance size-exclusion chromatography (hpsec). the five sub-fractions were tested at different concentrations (0; 0.0001; 0.001; 0.003; 0.005; and 0.001 mol l-1 c) for their capacity to stimulate root growth of arabidopisis thaliana (ecotype col 4) seedlings. for maize seedlings (zea mays hybrid uenf 506-6) a rate of 0.002 mol l-1 c was used. the quadratic model described the relationship between root growth induction and ha dose in arabidopsis; 0.00511 mol l-1 c was the average inflection point. at the optimum concentration, a significant negative correlation between molecular weight distribution and the number of lateral roots induced in a. thaliana was observed. however, other root traits, e.g., area and length, were not influenced by the apparent molecular weight of fractions. an increase in the number of mitotic and lateral root emission was observed for maize seedlings, both for the treatment with ha as well as with the sub-fractions. the h+-atpase activity of plasma membrane was significantly affected by ha, although differently in the sub-fractions. the stimulating activity of root growth seems to be more related to the chemical structure of humic substances than to the distribution of molecular weight of the humic aggregates.

Abstract: the first genital contact occurs during adolescence. while studying the sexuality of male adolescents seen in nesa-uerj, we found out that within the boys whom had started having sex, 20,3% have had homosexual experience. this article aims to analyze the characteristics of those boys whom have had sex with others men. we performed a cross-sectional study randomly interviewing male adolescents in nesa. we interviewed 105 male adolescents, where 64 of those have had sexual relationships. within those 64, 13 (20,3%) have already had sexual contact with another male. within those 13 adolescents, only two (15,4%) considered themselves as being homosexuals and three (23,1%) bisexuals. the great majority (69,2%) had their first sexual relationship with females and 46,2% of the all boys (n=13) had sex with males for money. there was a significant association (p<0,05) between homosexuality and prostitution. there was not any significant difference between homosexual relationship and the following variables: number of partners greater than two, condom use and being diagnosed with std. we concluded that the sexual relationships between men were diverse, but neither definite of homosexual identity nor representative of an increase risk of std. however, the vulnerability of the male adolescents to prostitution through homosexuality called our attention.

Abstract: the histo-blood group abh antigens were first described in humans. these antigens are only present on erythrocytes from great apes and humans, while in more primitive animals they are found in tissues and body fluids. the abh antigens are mainly distributed in tissues exposed to the external environment and potentially serve as ligands for pathogens or inhibitors of tissue connections. the objective of this paper was two-fold: (i) to determine the presence of helicobacter sp. in the gastric mucosa of 16 captive and 24 free-living new world monkeys and (ii) to evaluate the presence of histopathological alterations related to bacterial infection and the associated expression of abh antigens in the tissue. stomach tissues from 13 species of monkey were assessed using haematoxylin-eosin and modified gram staining (hucker) methods. an immunohistochemical analysis of the tissue revealed the presence of infectious bacteria that were characteristic of the genus helicobacter sp. the results demonstrate that various species of monkey might be naturally infected with the helicobacter sp. and that there is an increased susceptibility to infection. this study serves as a comparative analysis of infection between human and non-human primates and indicates the presence of a new species of helicobacter.
