Neuropsychological Performance of Adolescents with High and Low School Performance  [PDF]

Abstract: The attainment of the school activity is comprised of the functional maturation of specific brain structures. The neuropsychological analysis enables to determine weak and strong neuropsychological factors in the course of development. The objective was to show the characteristics of the performance of normotypical adolescents during tasks which evaluate the “analysis and spatial synthesis” and “regulation and control” neuropsychological factors in adolescents with high and low academic performance. A total of 48 adolescents, between 12 and 15 years old, who attended middle school in an urban public institution in Puebla, México, were assessed. Groups of students with high (24) and low (24) academic performance of the three grades were formed. The qualitative neuropsychological assessment was process-oriented, including the specific quirks of execution of the tasks that assess the functional status of the neuropsychological factors proposed by A. R. Luria. Mixed analysis was implemented. The results reveal functional weakness of the neuropsychological factors “regulation and control” and “spatial analysis” (in the global spatial perceptual modality) in the group with low performance, and a systemic effect in the assessment tasks: visual and verbal retention and alertness. The incorporation of neuropsychology in the educational systems is the key.

Abstract: an individual's beliefs about knowledge and the ways to acquire it, i.e. his/her epistemological beliefs, affect the way to approach the learning process; this has implications in the training of students. it has been suggested that such beliefs are made up by relatively independent dimensions, some related to the nature of knowledge, others to the nature of the learning process. we have inquired into the possible multidimensional nature of epistemological beliefs of medical students, through a likert-type questionnaire, and its possible influence on academic performance in biochemistry as a subject of study. analysis of results showed four dimensions in the measured epistemological beliefs. it was also found that the belief that knowledge is made up of discrete and independent units correlates significantly with poor performance in the mentioned subject.

Abstract: Las creencias que un individuo tiene sobre lo que es el conocimiento y las formas de adquirirlo, sus creencias epistemológicas, afectan su forma de aproximarse al aprendizaje, lo cual tiene implicaciones para el proceso de formación de los estudiantes. Se ha sugerido que estas creencias están constituidas por dimensiones relativamente independientes, unas relacionadas a la naturaleza del conocimiento y otra a la naturaleza del proceso de aprendizaje. Se indagó sobre la posible naturaleza multidimensional de las creencias epistemológicas de los estudiantes de medicina, mediante un cuestionario tipo Likert, y su posible influencia sobre el rendimiento académico en la asignatura Bioquímica. El análisis de los resultados mostró la existencia de cuatro dimensiones en las creencias epistemológicas medidas. Igualmente se encontró que la creencia en que el conocimiento está formado por unidades discretas e independientes, se correlaciona de manera significativa con un pobre rendimiento académico en la asignatura mencionada. Relación entre los conocimientos previos y el rendimiento en la asignatura bioquímica en estudiantes de medicina

Abstract: the relationship between the results of a previous knowledge diagnostic exam (de), the academic performance in biochemistry, and the way the students were admitted to the "luis razetti" medical school in 2004-2005, was determined. the average grade obtained in the diagnostic exam was 10.2 ± 5.4 and had a pearson correlation of 0.7 (p= 0.000) with the academic performance. it was found that students that were admitted to the ucv by a selection process have a better outcome in the diagnostic exam (10.7 ± 5.58 vs. 8.2 ± 4.6) and in the academic performance, compared to the students that were admitted by any of the admission agreements subscribed by the ucv. it was concluded that students that do not have the previous knowledge required have more probability to obtain low califications in biochemistry.
Relación entre los conocimientos previos y el rendimiento en la asignatura bioquímica en estudiantes de medicina

Abstract: Se determinó la relación entre los resultados de un examen diagnóstico, dise ado para medir los conocimientos previos de los estudiantes, el rendimiento en la asignatura bioquímica, y su forma de ingreso a la Escuela "Luis Razetti" en el período 2004-2005. La nota promedio obtenida en el examen diagnóstico fue de 10,2 ± 5,4 y tuvo una correlación de Pearson con el rendimiento académico de 0,7 (P= 0,000). Se encontró que los estudiantes que ingresan a la UCV por algún método de selección tienen un rendimiento mejor, tanto en el examen diagnóstico (10,7 ± 5,58 vs. 8,2 ± 4,6) como en el rendimiento académico (11,01 ± 4,82 vs. 7,3 ± 3,73), que los estudiantes que ingresan por los diferentes convenios suscritos por la UCV. Se concluye que los estudiantes que no tienen los conocimientos previos necesarios tienen mayor probabilidad de obtener un bajo rendimiento en la asignatura bioquímica. Evaluación de una prueba piloto para incorporar a los estudiantes de medicina a la producción de conocimiento científico

Abstract: recent progress of scientific research has notably increased the basic knowledge in genetic and molecular biology, required by medical doctors. biochemistry educators in medical schools are challenged not only, to provide students with a strong and updated base with this new information, but also to engage them into the scientific process. one of the newest educational tools that could provide this achievement is the acquisition of information by learning-doing, like laboratory activities. in order to evaluate the impact of laboratory work over medical development a pilot experience was held at the biochemistry department of ?luis razetti? medical school, at universidad central de venezuela from 2005 to 2006. basic techniques in molecular biology were introduced to registered students and they were able to isolate dna from different human samples, perform a pcr reaction and visualize the pcr product in agarose electrophoresis gel. we also included information about ethical issues regarding information for genetic and genomic research, such an informed consent and donation of biological samples to biobank, very actual and important information for medical doctor.at the end of the activity, the students were asked, by using a voluntary and anonymous survey, about the impact of the laboratory knowledge acquisition. the result of the survey reported, that the students considered these laboratory activities important and useful tools in their learning process. we received their suggestion to include more laboratory activities in the biochemistry curricular program.
Evaluación de una prueba piloto para incorporar a los estudiantes de medicina a la producción de conocimiento científico

Abstract: El reciente progreso de la investigación científica ha aumentado notablemente el conocimiento básico, en biología molecular y genética, requerido en la formación de los médicos. Los profesores de Bioquímica en las Facultades de Medicina tienen un gran reto no sólo en transmitirles a los estudiantes una base sólida y actual de nueva información, sino motivarlos hacia la investigación. Una de las estrategias de educación que puede proporcionar este logro, es la adquisición de la información de una manera “aprenderhaciendo”. Para probar el efecto de una actividad práctica, la Cátedra de la Bioquímica de la Escuela de Medicina “Luis Razetti”, de la Universidad Central de Venezuela realizó en su curso regular 2005-2006 una actividad práctica piloto para introducir las técnicas básicas en biología molecular. En esta experiencia del laboratorio, los estudiantes pudieron aislar ADN de diversas muestras humanas, realizar una reacción de PCR y visualizar el producto de PCR mediante electroforesis en geles de agarosa. También incluimos información sobre tópicos éticos de la investigación en genómica como consentimientos informados y donación de muestras biológicas a un biobanco. Al final de la actividad, se les solicitó información usando una encuesta voluntaria y anónima, sobre el impacto de la actividad práctica en la adquisición del conocimiento propuesto. Las respuestas de los estudiantes demostraron que la actividad práctica les fue de gran utilidad, expresaron la importancia de esta clase de herramientas educacionales en su proceso de aprendizaje y recomendaron la inclusión de más actividades prácticas en el plan curricular de la asignatura Bioquímica. Abstract: human development is the expression of a process through which men and women are offered opportunities to have a longer life, more education and a greater income, which lead to improved well-being. however, such opportunities have been historically denied to women, as has been their participation in economic, political and decision-making activities. the objective of this article is to show the level of development and empowerment for women versus men in the northern region of mexico (coahuila, chihuahua and durango). the results show that women have reduced the gap in the options they have for developing their capacities, though inequity in their usage persists.
Species diversity, structure and dynamics of two populations of an endangered species, Magnolia dealbata (Magnoliaceae)

Abstract: little is known about the ecology and demography of the genus magnolia. magnolia dealbata zucc. is an endangered species endemic to mexico. two contrasting populations of m. dealbata (one from the grasslands and other from a secondary cloud forest) were studied. we asked the following questions: (a) are size structure (diameter at breast height, dbh) and infrutescence production significantly different between the two populations? (b) what are the populations? growth rates (λ) based on an initial 1987 study? (c) are the associated species diversity indices of these m. dealbata populations significantly different? the results show no significant differences between the population size structure (p=.094); the growth rates of the populations were 0.992 in grassland and 1.053 in secondary cloud forest. the number of infrutescences produced in year 2001 and dbh relationship were significantly linear (p<.001) in both populations, and there was no significant difference (p>.01) between their slopes. the diversity indices were not significantly different (p>.05), and only 54% of the species were common to both sites. our study suggests that both populations are relatively stable and that the management history could impact more on the species composition than on the diversity indices. rev. biol. trop. 54 (3): 997-1002. epub 2006 sept. 29.

Magnolia dealbata Zucc. es una especie endémica de México y es considerada en peligro de extinción. Se estudiaron dos poblaciones contrastantes de M. dealbata (una dentro de un pastizal y la otra dentro de vegetación secundaria del bosque mesófilo de monta a -bosque de niebla-). Buscamos respuestas a las siguientes preguntas: (a) La estructura de tama os y la producción de frutos de ambas poblaciones son significativamente diferentes? (b) Cuáles son las tasas de crecimiento poblacional (λ), tomando como población inicial un estudio de 1987? (c) Son significativamente diferentes los valores de diversidad de especies de ambas poblaciones? No hallamos diferencias significativas entre la estructura de tama os de ambas poblaciones (p=.094). Las tasas de crecimiento poblacional de las poblaciones en pastizal y en el bosque secundario de neblina fueron 0.992 y 1.053, respectivamente. El número de infrutescencias por individuo producidas en 2001 y su relación con el diámetro a la altura del pecho fueron significativamente lineales, y no hubo diferencias significativas entre sus pendientes (p>.1).
