MECHNER'S NOTATION USED AS A COMPARATIVE TOOL OF DIABETES SELF-MANAGEMENT ENHANCEMENT INTERVENTIONS
Hernández-Pozo,María del Rocío; Hattori-Hara,Mónica;
Suma Psicológica , 2012,
Abstract: elder population is becoming proportionally a larger segment of the total population and among their health problems, diabetes mellitus (dm) is one of their main causes of death and disability. in dm, self-management is the basis for a better control, which is why public policy makers and healthcare providers should have available analytic tools that allow them to discriminate among the best self-care interventions in diabetes for older patients. even though there are several meta-analyses already that offer this kind of review, this article proposes the use of mechner's behavioral contingencies language to compare different approaches. three interventions were described with this notation and even though there were some limitations for this analysis due to the fact that some results were not comparable or not available in the original papers, this formal symbolic language demonstrated to be useful for making analytical comparisons visually accessible, providing a better understanding of the contingencies that are at play in the situation and giving the advantage of cutting across all natural languages.

Coping Strategies and Self-Efficacy for Diabetes Management in Older Mexican Adults  [PDF]

Psychology (PSYCH) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/psych.2013.46A1006
Abstract:

Diabetes Mellitus 2 (DM2) affects 20% of the elderly population in Mexico, causes disability and death, and demands many life-style changes. Since DM2 control is largely responsibility of the patient, management itself is source of stress. Coping is a process by which persons face stressful situations, and active coping have proved being effective in disease control. Social-cognitive perspective suggests that self-efficacy believes can regulate human functioning, therefore they could promote specific coping if relations between them are found. The study aim was to examine the association between coping strategies and self-efficacy in DM2 management in a group of 126 Mexican adults over 54 years old (= 68.57, SD = 7.19), which answered an interview about sociodemographics data, self-efficacy in diabetes and coping strategies. The most common kind of coping used by the sample was self-recreation (= 50.41, SD = 19.50) and religious faith (= 50.04, SD = 17.65), and in self-efficacy the domain of taking the medicines had the greater score (= 90.25, SD = 16.08). Total score in self-efficacy had significant correlations with active coping (r = .402,

Abstract: Objective: The purpose of this study was to identify the best predictors of dyslipidemias in Mexican obese children using different anthropometric and body composition measurements. Methods: In an observational, cross-sectional study, 905 children from 5 schools were measured for weight, height, waist and hip circumference, and triceps and subscapular skinfolds. A fasting blood sample was taken from a random sub-sample of 306 children to determine lipid profile. Abnormal total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides, total cholesterol to HDL ratio, and LDL to HDL ratio, were determined. Logistic regressions and ROC analysis were carried out to determine the best anthropometric predictors of these risk factors. Results: Prevalence of elevated total cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL cholesterol was 14%, 56% and 58%, respectively. In logistic regressions, BMI and triceps skinfold had the highest odds ratios to predict elevated total cholesterol (1.05, 95%CI: 0.97 - 1.14; 1.07, 1.01 - 1.13, respectively), triglycerides (1.19, 1.11 - 1.27; 1.12, 1.08 - 1.17, respectively), LDL cholesterol (1.11, 1.04 - 1.18; 1.09, 1.05 - 1.14, respectively), total cholesterol to HDL ratio (1.06, 1.00-1.14; 1.07,1.03-1.12, respectively) and LDL to HDL ratio risk (1.08,1.01-1.15; 1.07, 1.03-1.12, respectively). After BMI and triceps skinfold, subscapular skinfold also predicted dyslipidemias, except for low HDL; both skinfolds had a narrower odds ratio confidence interval than BMI. In ROC analysis, subscapular skinfold was the best predictor of elevated triglycerides with an AUC ≥ 0.7. Conclusion: Anthropometric measurements are not strongly associated with dyslipidemias in Mexican children. However, since triceps and subscapular skinfolds were better predictors than other anthropometry measures, they may be a simple way to predict dyslipidemias in Mexican children.

Abstract: the contingency language developed by mechner (2008) is proposed for examining variables responsible for production and maintenance of addictive behavior for work. three associated terms are examined: workaholism, burnout and passion for work from specialized literature in the field of health and organization psychology. a diagram with symbolic elements is presented to facilitate visual detection of iterative relationships that maintain these tendencies at different stages, the first where the employee exhibits an intense rhythm of work in the absence of stimulus control that prevents detachment from work, even outside working hours. positive and negative consequences at different scenarios are depicted, as a result of this life style, to be followed by a major health crisis that leads to rehabilitation. as a conclusion the use of contingency diagrams is proposed for the interdisciplinary study of workaholic behavior that will aid in the prevention of this health problem.

Abstract: the age of porfiriato represented a huge contradiction in the history of the twentieth-century mexico. the social, economic and political developments between 1900 and 1910 shaped the society of that time, and were the trigger for the "revolucion mexicana", one of the major world revolutions from the last century. this article aims to analyze the journalism practiced in those years, due it became a faithful reflection not only of the changes of society towards modernity, but also of the public space in where new forms of expression occurred from renewed currents of liberal thought in the early twentieth century.
