Lantschner,María V; Rusch,Verónica;
Ecolog?-a austral , 2007,
Abstract: to be able to plan productive uses of the land compatible with the conservation of the biodiversity, it is essential to evaluate the changes that they cause. the andean patagonic forests undergo different anthropogenic disturbances, like fires, grazing, wood extraction and substitution by exotic coniferous plantations. these activities cause changes on the vegetation and animal communities, and could be affecting the functioning of the forest ecosystems. in argentine patagonia, there is a growing opposition to productive activities, particularly to pine plantations, because of its supposed negative ecological consequences, however their impacts are unknown. the aim of this study was to evaluate in which measure different uses of the vegetation of the basin of foyel river (no argentine patagonia) cause changes on bird communities, especially on the functionally important and the endangered species. birds counts were conducted from november 2004 to march 2005 (summer) using the variable circular-plot method, in twenty four sites of nothofagus antarctica native forests and scrubs with different levels of grazing and wood extraction (closed, semiopened, opened), and in eight exotic plantations of pseudotsuga menziesii and pinus spp. although, the vegetation structure of each site was characterized, to identify structural elements of the forests that could be important for bird habitat. population densities of birds did not differ between vegetation types (25.4 ± 8.4 individuals/ha) associated to different disturbances. bird richness and diversity shannon index), however, were different among the vegetation types, in forestations both were similar to the undisturbed vegetation types, whereas they increased in vegetations with a medium intensity of wood extraction and grazing, and were highest in those sites whit a high intensity of wood extraction and grazing. a canonical correspondence analysis and an analysis of species composition similarity showed that there are two
The paradox of our outcomes, and the use of qualitative methodology as a way to understand the realities of emerging countries  [PDF]

Abstract: It is a fact that global health indicators in vulnerable populations are not improving, despite all resources concentrated in this area. Therefore, as a teacher and researcher in an international doctorate in Public Health, I took advantage of the contact with health professionals from Colombia, Peru and Bolivia (they were all my students) to try to better understand which factors may be affecting this paradox from the perspective of the major actors and therefore through a qualitative methodology. The main conclusion is that the health goals for the target populations (emerging and developing countries) are not the same as the goals for the planners and administrators of public health budgets. So if we want to improve health outcomes, it is time to let talk the people involved, and to let the administrators listen.
Mancini,María V.;
Ameghiniana , 2007,
Abstract: this paper presents the pollen analysis from two sequences located in the southeast of patagonia, argentina, to reconstruct paleoenvironmental conditions during the last millennium. a mire ("mallín") located at 52o 19' 45''s, 68o 23' 01''w, as well as a road cut outcrop presenting a soil within late holocene eolian and colluvial deposits at 52o 19' 47''s, 68o 22' 22''w, were sampled. before ca. 1000 yr bp, shrubland in the mire sides and a grass-shrub steppe allow to infer drier climatic conditions than at present. the increase in poaceae and juncaginaceae and later cyperaceae preponderance in the mire sequence, as well as a grass steppe similar to the present-day steppe at regional scales according to soil pollen records, suggest moisture increase after ca. 700 yr bp. pollen record data from the upper section of the soil profile, buried by recent eolian deposits, present the highest rumex values and could probably be related to the impact produced by the introduction of sheep at the end of 19th century.
Vázquez,María Celia;
Revista Pilquen , 2005,
Abstract: in 1957, juan josé hernández arregui publishes his book imperialismo y cultura (imperialism and culture), a response to the post-peronist situation, that was re-printed several times for more than a decade. hernández arregui himself writes the forewords for each re-printing (1957, 1964, and 1973) that appear together in the 1973 re-print. the subsequent forewords introduce the book as a kind of work in progress through which the ideological and personal political program achieved in the 16 years that elapse between the first and the last print, as well as a panoramic view of the evolution of the national and popular field in argentina, are simultaneously outlined. from a rhetorical perspective, the forewords resemble the introductions of argumentative discourse, since both appeared as the ideal space for the self-reflexive practice of the author's image as well as of the subject studied. we shall find out by which strategies the image of the essay writer is configured as a committed intellectual who keeps custody of the national truths; which are bound to persuade the proto-addresse, that in the '60s is identified with the university youth that mostly prefers the national and popular field.
Vélez,María Alejandra;
Revista de Estudios Sociales , 2009,
Abstract: behind the collective titling of almost six million hectares of land to black communities in the pacific coast region of colombia is the formation of more than 157 community councils as the new local government and highest authority in the territory. law 70 of 1993 not only changed the property regime in the pacific region, when it moved from an open access to a common property regime (berkes et al. 1989; ostrom 2000), but it also changed the political map of the region by promoting the formation of the community councils as the new form of local government. from an institutional perspective, this article examines the case of the community councils in the rural area of buenaventura using the principles defined by ostrom (1990, 2005) that characterize robust and sustainable self-governed systems. the definition of property rights and the exclusion of non-members is the frst step in the sustainable use of resources. equally important, however, is the regulation of community members, which goes beyond just defining and formalizing the rules for natural resource management. the greatest challenge facing buenaventura's community councils is the establishment of a monitoring and enforcement system that gradually penalizes non-compliance (ostrom 2005).

Abstract: the life of colombians has established itself throughout the years in an identitarian way through common places and important dates. one of those dates is the 9th of april of 1948. but this investigation, more than just concentrating on the details of the life of the liberal leader who died on this fateful day, jorge eliecer gaitan, and the consequences of his death in itself, pauses and reflects on the graphic form in which the newspapers el siglo and el tiempo and the magazine cromos have presented the death of this leader and the surrounding circumstances; and how between 1948 and 1973 photographic presentations have changed in those publications.
