Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis Viruses (VEEV) in Argentina: Serological Evidence of Human Infection
María Belén Pisano ,Griselda Oria,Geraldine Beskow,Javier Aguilar,Brenda Konigheim,María Luisa Cacace,Luis Aguirre,Marina Stein,Marta Silvia Contigiani
PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases , 2013, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pntd.0002551
Abstract: Venezuelan equine encephalitis viruses (VEEV) are responsible for human diseases in the Americas, producing severe or mild illness with symptoms indistinguishable from dengue and other arboviral diseases. For this reason, many cases remain without certain diagnosis. Seroprevalence studies for VEEV subtypes IAB, ID, IF (Mosso das Pedras virus; MDPV), IV (Pixuna virus; PIXV) and VI (Rio Negro virus; RNV) were conducted in persons from Northern provinces of Argentina: Salta, Chaco and Corrientes, using plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT). RNV was detected in all studied provinces. Chaco presented the highest prevalence of this virus (14.1%). Antibodies against VEEV IAB and -for the first time- against MDPV and PIXV were also detected in Chaco province. In Corrientes, seroprevalence against RNV was 1.3% in the pediatric population, indicating recent infections. In Salta, this was the first investigation of VEEV members, and antibodies against RNV and PIXV were detected. These results provide evidence of circulation of many VEE viruses in Northern Argentina, showing that surveillance of these infectious agents should be intensified.
El estudio de la sintaxis infantil a partir del diálogo con ni?os: Aportes metodológicos
Silva,María Luisa;
Interdisciplinaria , 2010,
Abstract: in the literature about children syntactic development, particularly during last four decades, it's been frequently read that studies sustain on spontaneous speech samples, i.e., daily dialogic instances between children or between children and adults, are problematic because it's necessary to have a considerable amount of children talk to pick up the syntactic forms in study and carry out a statistical analysis (demuth, 1996). besides some studies consider that samples does not represent child language uses but some specific usages (chomsky, 1969), and so the results lacks of validity and are only descriptions of syntactic tendencies (lust, flynn, & foley, 1996) or that the data are spurious because in spontaneous contexts is difficult to control the interference of contextual variables (echeverría, 1978). however there is consensus about the fact that these samples provide rich qualitative data. in order to pose an alternative to this methodological controversy, this paper presents a semistructured interview design that seeks to preserve the distinctive characteristics of conversational exchanges but allows obtaining a sizeable amount of children syntactic data, to make a comparison between subjects and statistical processing. the design takes into account the contributions of a group of cognitive perspectives about the processes by which the subjects produce, comprehend, acquire, and develop language: cognitive linguistic (lakoff, 1987; langacker, 1987), mental cognitive frames and spaces theory (fauconnier, 1985), gramaticalization theory (hopper, 1998), and language usage model (tomasello, 2001). also it considers some methodological criteria from sociolinguistics (labov, 1991; lavandera, 1984), ethnography of speaking (gumperz, 1982), functionalist perspective on language development (karmiloff-smith, 1986), and a set of criteria developed in a previous exploratory research (silva, 2001). we select interview because it's recognized that it's the situation whic

Abstract: our culture associates progress with scientific development and particularly with technological development. in the latin american context, this association is not as definitive as it seems to be for the "developed" countries. when attempting to integrate the biotechnological-progress equation into the reality of life in latin america, all sorts of conflicts emerge, especially ethical ones, such as transforming agricultural traditions with genetically modified seeds and using our people as objects of experimentation. there is no ethical justification for taking advantage of the difficulties suffered by the majority of the world's population, including latin americans, for the benefit of only a few. the proposal is to turn these communities into protagonists. they should not be recipients of a cultural tradition that often is foreign to them.
Derechos Humanos y género: Tramas violentas
Femenías,María Luisa;
Frónesis , 2009,
Abstract: latin america is not on the sidelines of the high degrees of violence against women recorded on a world level. what factors favor it so that its extension, depth and persistence are almost unperceived, both in public as well as private spaces? what proposals sustain it? this study will propose some possible kinds of invisibilization for violence, based first on the analysis of language as an invisibilizer of violence and a place for the construction of subjects with gender blindness. second, it will examine the violence that follows from racial discrimination at its sex-gender intersection. third, it will approach extreme violence in rapes and mutilations followed by death, taking as a paradigmatic but not unique case, deaths in the city of juarez. finally, the study will make a general evaluation of the route that has been examined.
Cuerpo y finitud: Una cuestión decisiva en las filosofías de Merleau-Ponty y Nietzsche
Pfeiffer,María Luisa;
Enfoques , 2008,
Abstract: the subject proposed by the modernity is not an incarnated one as long as it does without what obliges to admit the other: the body. because of that, in the play of objectivity, the body is an object too, the relationship with him and from him is interfered by the reflection and the sensitive experience ignoring the "lived body". nowadays in western countries to think about the subject is to think of the body. until the end of 20th century the body was ignored and this in a double sense: as a constitutive component of subjectivity and as a place of knowledge. this paper discusses the philosophy of merleau-ponty, which is essentially a meditation on the body and corporality as regards its relation to the nietzschean notion of the body from the assumption that the manner of considering the body and the bodily condition of man imply a decision about what is proper to the human condition.

Abstract: which is the price humanity must pay for technological progress? this article arises the question whether technology secures a moral progress, and asks what kind of relation has been established with science and its preeminence over science itself. then follows the analysis of biotechnology applied to agriculture: confronting some data to the certainty of its innocuousness proclaimed both from specialized fields as well as from economical and political domains
Aportes de la Filosofía al análisis de expresiones de nuestra cotidianidad
Rubinelli,María Luisa;
Estudios de filosof?-a pr??ctica e historia de las ideas , 2008,
Abstract: we propose to analyze three categories we consider to be an important contribution to reflect upon argentine reality, currently as well as throughout argentine history. constructs carriet out by the argentine philosopher arturo a. roig offers theoretic methodological contributions important for the interpretation of latin american identity expressions. the category we have considered are: a) anthropological a priori, b) discourse universe and c) emergent moralities. the first one mentions the decisive importance of self-recognition of its value, on the behalf of the historical, social and concrete subject. the second one opens the possibility of getting to the bottom of the sense of various kinds of discourse (including narrations incorrectly considered static due to the fact that they are expressions of traditional beliefs) thast live with and oppose to each other, considering certain aspects, historical moments and socio-political and economical ones, because they are expressions of ideologies and positions antithetic inside a culture and society, visualizin in this way the great expressions of positioning that, from different discourses and argumentative alternatives, confronts the ethics imposed by current power. finding in these categories strong ethical implications, we establish relations with positionings of other latin-american thinkers preoccupied for the development of theoretical intercultural perspectives.
Distribucion geografica, nodulacion y comportamiento agronomico de tres especies de sebanias nativas de zonas inundables en Venezuela
Izaguirre,María Luisa;
Agronomía Tropical , 2005,
Abstract: the aim of this work was to study the growth and nodulation of three sesbania species native of seasonally flooded areas in venezuela. the species s. punicea (sp) and s. sericea (ss) were collected in the miranda state, while s. exasperata (se) in the aragua state. all individuals were nodulated with nodules located in submerged roots, which were like embedded in a white aerenchyma. rhizobial isolation from nodules yielded seven isolates from sp, seven from ss, and ten from se. the bulk of isolates were fast growers and did not tolerate nacl concentrations above 1%. all isolates from sp were acid producers, while a greater variability was observed within isolates from ss and se. all isolates shown a high symbiotic efficiency in their original hosts, but only those from sp formed effective nodules in vigna unguiculata. seed germination of sesbania occurred exclusively after chemical scarification with concentrated sulfuric acid for 1 h. however, seedlings did not survive in controlled-sterile conditions in spite of the effective nodulation with their corresponding isolates. in the other hand, an optimal growth and prolific nodulation was observed in plants growing in flooded fields during the rainy season, although growth was hampered during the dry season, probably due to a marked decreases in the level of the water
Investigación en medicina y Derechos Humanos

Abstract: research, mainly that involving human beings, in many circumstances is associated to risk, even peril, specially when abuses affecting fundamental rights of persons like life or integrity are progressively discovered. in this paper we analyze the context which favors the fact that regulations and controls over research protocols allow violation of human rights. the bioethical reference framework is the human rights declarations made by un in relation to the declaration of helsinki, regarded as the standard with widest procedural acceptance and moral credibility in the history of international standards in the field of research.
Retos epistemológicos y teóricos para el curriculum ambiental de posgrados

Avalia??o: Revista da Avalia??o da Educa??o Superior (Campinas) , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1414-40772008000100007
Abstract: the goal of this article is to contribute some considerations for the formulation of environmental curricula at the postgraduate level. here the challenges of the environmental education are on one hand the capacity to situate the proposal in reality, recognising the importance of a social project, and on the other hand the epistemological fundamentation and clarity, where the interdisciplinarity is significant. this need is clearly reflected by examining, here in a shallow way, the offer of environmental postgraduate studies in latin america, which after 25 years of the recommendations of the first meeting of university and environment, have still a complete validity.
