Health (Health) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/health.2011.33030
Abstract: Takayasu’s arteritis (TA), of unknown etiology, has been related with Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. The published cases are controversial. A 29- year-old man died, prolapse of the aortic valve and unspecific arteritis were demonstrated at necropsy. Our objective was to search in the fresh aortic tissues, the infectious agent of tuberculosis through culture, as well as by performing histopathology and searching by the molecular study, sequences of genes associated to micobacteria and Ziehl’s stain. Results. The bacillus of tuberculosis was observed by the Ziehl’s stain and the sequences of insertion IS6110 gene were identified. Our findings support the relation of TA with possible tuberculosis infection.Conclusion. The possibility that Takayasu’s arteritis is an extra pulmonary tu-berculosis must be explored.

Abstract: the aim of this study was to measure the frequency of hearing loss in a sample of typical public high-school students exposed to recreational noise, and determine associated risk factors. the sample was made up of 214 teenagers from a high-school in mexico city; subjects were selected randomly per strata. we applied a questionnaire to identify risk factors for hearing loss and performed a battery of audiologic tests consisting of otoscopy, tympanometry, and pure-tone audiometry. the mean age of the sample was 16 ± 1.07 years; 73% were male and 27%, female. hearing loss was found in 21% of students. the main hearing loss-related risk factor was exposure to recreational noise: frequent attendance at discotheques and pop-music concerts; use of personal stereos; and noise exposure in school workshops. the high frequency of hearing loss in high school students from one mexico city school (nearly one fifth of the sample) was found to be related to noise exposure mainly during recreational activities.
An Anti-Interleukin-2 Receptor Drug Attenuates T- Helper 1 Lymphocytes-Mediated Inflammation in an Acute Model of Endotoxin-Induced Uveitis

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the anti-inflammatory efficacy of Daclizumab, an anti-interleukin-2 receptor drug, in an experimental uveitis model upon a subcutaneous injection of lipopolysaccharide into Lewis rats, a valuable model for ocular acute inflammatory processes. The integrity of the blood-aqueous barrier was assessed 24 h after endotoxin-induced uveitis by evaluating two parameters: cell count and protein concentration in aqueous humors. The histopathology of all the ocular structures (cornea, lens, sclera, choroid, retina, uvea, and anterior and posterior chambers) was also considered. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays of the aqueous humor samples were performed to quantify the levels of the different chemokine and cytokine proteins. Similarly, a biochemical analysis of oxidative stress-related markers was also assessed. The inflammation observed in the anterior chamber of the eyes when Daclizumab was administered with endotoxin was largely prevented since the aqueous humor protein concentration substantially lowered concomitantly with a significant reduction in the uveal and vitreous histopathological grading. Th1 lymphocytes-related cytokines, such as Interleukin-2 and Interferon-γ, also significantly reduced with related anti-oxidant systems recovery. Daclizumab treatment in endotoxin-induced uveitis reduced Th1 lymphocytes-related cytokines, such as Interleukin-2 and Interferon gamma, by about 60–70% and presented a preventive role in endotoxin-induced oxidative stress. This antioxidant protective effect of Daclizumab may be related to several of the observed Daclizumab effects in our study, including IL-6 cytokine regulatory properties and a substantial concomitant drop in INFγ. Concurrently, Daclizumab treatment triggered a significant reduction in both the uveal histopathological grading and protein concentration in aqueous humors, but not in cellular infiltration.

Abstract: background: systemic vasculitis are a group of heterogeneous diseases characterized by inflammation and necrosis of blood vessel walls. the etiology is not known, but geographic and environmental factors are implicated. aim: to describe the clinical features of microscopic polyangiitis (mpa) and wegener's granulomatosis (wg) in a chilean cohort of patients. patients and methods: retrospective review of the medical records of 123 patients with the diagnosis of systemic vasculitis (65 mpa and 58 wg), seen from 1990 to 2001. the diagnosis were made based on the american college of rheumatology and chapel hill criteria. results: the mean follow-up for mpa was 15 months (1-120) and for wg, 20 months (1-120). the median age (years) at diagnosis for mpa was 61 (19-82) and wg 50 (20-82). gender distribution was similar in both groups (male: 68% and 57% respectively).the main clinical features in the mpa group were renal involvement (68%), peripheral nervous system involvement (57%), pulmonary hemorrhage (28%), and skin disease (32%). in the wg group were alveolar hemorrhage (62%), renal involvement (78%), paranasal sinus involvement (57%), and ocular disease (26%). in both, creatinine levels above 2.0 mg/dl were associated with a higher mortality (p< 0.01). anca by immunofluorescence was performed in 56 mpa patients (75% had panca, 4% had canca and 21% were anca negative) and in 55 wg patients (17% had panca, 79% had canca and 4% were anca negative). global mortality was 18% and 17% respectively, and the most common causes of death were infections. conclusions: the clinical features of our patients are similar to other published data. in our wg and mpa patients the main predictor for death was a serum creatinine above 2 mg/dl.
