Abstract: the medical humanities have been understood in different ways. this paper deals with their importance for undergraduate medical education. firstly, it analyzes their development and various readings. secondly, it reflects on the role of the social sciences and humanities in the production of health knowledge, within the political socioeconomic cultural latin-american context. finally, it considers their contribution to the educational processes, by way of the center for the development of social sciences and humanities.

Abstract: an important point in the development of the nexus science - technology - society was necessary so that they could become object of metascientific attention, so its relationships, tensions and contradictions became evident. science and technology did not always have the same repercussion in the social environment. as a result of their increasing importance especially from the xix century on, and through the processes of professionalization and institutionalization of science fostered by capitalist production relationships, science and technology occupy every time a bigger space in the social life, which has conditioned the necessity to study their interrelations. this work will expose the necessity and the socio- historical foundations of social studies, as well as their expression in the field denominated science technology and society (sts). the topic of science was the one chosen to carry out the theoretical treatment, always keeping in mind that, any approach to this topic should incorporate the current tendency to stress its indiferenciation with technology by means of the technoscience concept. after that, a concept that allows an approach to the scientific and technological activity will be presented, as well as, their social conditions and results: professionals ' thinking style. to stress the significance of this theory of thinking style and social studies in general to appraise medical activity as a technoscientific form of activity, will be the final purpose

Abstract: this work's objective is to approach epistemologically, the process of social construction of health. the fundamental arguments aim at demonstrating that such an approach allows to analyze health in a complex and multilateral way, due to the existance of diverse approaches and the possibility of overcoming the limitations of the common vision of health as ? illness absence?. the recognition that health should be understood as a process, means to focus on its development by diverse social protagonists. a process that generates adaptation tensions, and also develops potentialities and capacities of behavior of the social sector involved. the active participation of society in the health construction process, adds a new dimension to the role of sciences and technologies in relation to the process. the balance between experts' criteria and social participation in the projection and control of the results, as well as other factors are readjusted

Abstract: as part of a strategy for continuing education, actions were carried out to improve education on science-technology-society at cuban medical universities. this paper presents the results of an exploratory study on the introduction of social studies of science and technology to the postgraduate formation of health professionals. results were analyzed, using descriptive statistics, and assessed according to participants? cognitive level and satisfaction. the preparation of professors and the quality and significance of the course were considered by participants as positive, which is to impact on both research and innovation of cuban medical universities.

Abstract: El trabajo tiene como objetivo tratar en el orden de lo epistemológico, al proceso de construcción social de la salud. Los argumentos fundamentales se dirigen a demostrar que tal acercamiento permite analizar a la salud de un modo complejo y multilateral, dada la entrada de diversos enfoques y la posibilidad de superar las limitaciones de la visión de la salud como ausencia de enfermedad. El reconocimiento de que la salud debe ser comprendida en su carácter de proceso, significa enfocarla en el devenir de su producción por los más diversos actores sociales; proceso en el que se generan tensiones de adaptación, desarrollo de potencialidades y capacidades óptimas del comportamiento del organismo social. La participación activa de la sociedad en el proceso constructivo de la salud, redimensiona el papel de las Ciencias y las Tecnologías con relación al proceso, se reajustan entre otros factores, el equilibrio entre el juicio de los expertos y la participación social en la proyección y control de los resultados This work's objective is to approach epistemologically, the process of social construction of health. Abstract: La Educación Superior en general ha arribado al siglo XXI abocada al reclamo de la pertinencia, a satisfacer la necesidad de contribuir al desarrollo económico, a ocupar cada vez mayor espacios en la construcción endógena de conocimiento, todo ello en el contexto de sus misiones en el campo de la ense anza, la investigación y la extensión universitaria, el presente trabajo toma estas consideraciones en cuenta para reflexionar entorno a la educación médica en particular.
