Abstract: introduction tobacco use is considered a worldwide public health problem because of the amount of death and disease it causes. the who reports that 30% of the adult population in the world are cigarette smokers, and that nearly five million of these will die within one year. prospective studies performed by the who show that if current tobacco use continues, in 2020 there will be 8.4 million deaths due to tobacco-related diseases every year; seven out of 10 of these deaths will occur in emergent countries, like mexico. more than 53000 tobacco users die every year in mexico because of tobacco-related diseases, and at least 147 of these die daily. data from the national addictions survey (nas) 2002 showed that 26.4% of the people between 12 and 65 years old were active tobacco consumers; this amounted to nearly 14 million individuals. of these, 7.1% were under 18 years old. the number of tobacco consumers in mexico has increased from nine million in 1988 to 14 million in 2002. according to the nas, 52% of the users smoke on a daily basis, and 61.4% of them began smoking when they were minors. to know the actual consumption levels, it is important to consider some factors: the number of cigarettes a person smokes, the different situations where a person smokes, and the social and physical consequences of smoking. thus, it would be possible to develop a consumer classification (i. e. soft consumers, mild consumers, and hard consumers). there may be numerous causes for a person to be ill. when speaking about the harmful effects of tobacco use, the literature is clear in stating that these begin with the first cigarette smoked. however, it can take up to 30 years for a consumer to notice the damage on his health after his/her consumption began; but within the first ten years there are problems in lung function and in physical endurance. when a person starts smoking there are acute and unpleasant side effects that are rarely associated with smoked tobacco use. consumption

Abstract: antecedents: endovascular treatment has the possibility of covering the dissection origin and to avoid its progression to aortic aneurysm, showing a 16% mortality reduction. objective: evaluate surgical results in terms of morbid-mortality in patients submitted to endovascular management of thoracic aortic lesions in the colombian cardiovascular foundation from 2003 to 2005. design-method: longitudinal descriptive retrospective study in which clinical histories of all patients submitted to endovascular treatment of thoracico-abdominal aortic lesions were evaluated. only patients with thoracic aortic procedures between 2003 and 2005 were included. data analysis was realized in stata/se 8,0. results: thoracic aortic procedures were performed in 16 patients. 75% were male with mean age 55.9 ± 12.6 years. 87.5% (14) had type a or b aortic dissection; one patient had traumatic aortic transection and one had aneurysm of thoracic descendant aorta. acute dissections were presented in 78.6% (11 patients) and chronic dissections in 21.4% (3 patients). average of endoprosthesis employed was 2.8 ± 1. intensive care unit stay was 3 ± 2.7 days. 81.3% had no mayor complications. mortality was 18.7% (3 patients). all patients had post-operative computerized tomography scan, with satisfactory evolution. conclusion: according to the largest casuistics literature reports, endovascular management of dissection, aneurysm or aortic trauma is considered a trustworthy procedure that diminishes morbid-mortality.

Latin american journal of aquatic research , 2009,
Abstract: a total of 126 sword-fish (xiphias gladius) stomach were analyzed. the stomachs were obtained from specimens captured within the 25° to 34°s and 78° to 90°w área, by industrial longline vessels. only 72 (57.1%) of the total stomach had food ítems in their stomachs, whit a sex proportion of 32 males (44.4%o), 37 females (51.4%) and 3 indeterminate (4.2%). traditional methods for the stomach contents analysis such as the numeric, frequency of occurrence, gravimetric and índex of relative importance (iri) were used. cephalopods were the main food ítems (%iir > 90) followed by the fishes (%iir < 4). the squid (dosidicus gigas) was the principal food in this study (%iir = 85.1). no significant differences were found between the feeding of males and females of swordfishes (u = 81; p = 0.4862, p < 0.05). a cluster analysis showed higher stomach contents similarity between fall and winter than those from spring, within the size groups the i group was different than others and finally, the feeding from zone 3 were different from others zones.
Prevalence of major depressive disorder in patients with modified radical mastectomy without reconstruction
Gloria Lucía Suárez Carreo,Ana Celina Rueda López
MedUNAB , 2007,
Abstract: Antecedents: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a psychiatric dysfunction that appears with relative frequency in the women with breast cancer diagnosis or which they are in treatment forthe same one. Nevertheless, specific data don’t exist in Colombia about the prevalence of depression in the patients with cancer who suffer from subjected to modified radical mastectomy without reconstruction. Objective: To determine the prevalence of MDD in resident patients in the metropolitan area of Bucaramanga with modified radical mastectomy without reconstruction. Method: It is a descriptive transversal study; it included women older than 18 years. We applied the SCID I. A semi structured interview for MDD based on approaches of the DSM-IV. Results: 80 women were evaluated with ages among the 30-85 years, with a 58.1 year-old average, SD13.79; the prevalence was of 42.5%, (95%CI 31.68 – 53.30) for MDD. The MDD was lower than in those women who had social support in 41.2% (PR 2.41; 95%CI 1.56-3.73) and was higher than in women who had problems due to the surgery in 88.2% (PR 3.41;95%CI 1.35- 8.64), we didn’t find association with age, the grade ofstudy, the marital status, the socioeconomic level, pain scale, the occupation and the time of the surgery. Conclusion: In this study TDM prevalence was higher than similar ones with general population; TDM was related directly with the problems derived from surgery and inversely with the social support.
Essaying the prolog language to obtain the computational evaluation of the coherence of reasoning
López Alonso,Alfredo O.; Del Rey,María Herminia;
Interdisciplinaria , 2004,
Abstract: automation in evaluating the test of reasoning coherence (trc, lópez alonso, 1981, 1988, 1996, 2000) is attempted by using logical programs. first in being applied is the prolog program. although non-sequential, prolog provides facts, and rules deriving into conclusions and uses deductive reasoning to solve programming problems. its working characteristics stem from clauses of predicate logic. this logic uses the same paths as reasoning when linguistically carried out. considering these characteristics many essays were attempted to automate the trc evaluation. some empirical essays and results are briefly exposed and discussed. program adjustments, and maladjustment found up-to-date between prolog language, and trc basic assumptions are succinctly analyzed.
