Extreme Rainfall Indices in the Hydrographic Basins of Brazil  [PDF]
María C. Valverde, José A. Marengo
Open Journal of Modern Hydrology (OJMH) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ojmh.2014.41002
Abstract: The authors analyze climate extremes indices (CEI) of rainfall over the largest basins of the Brazilian territory: Amazon (AMA), S?o Francisco (SF), Tocantins (TO) and Paraná (PAR) rivers. The CEI represent the frequency of heavy precipitation events (R30mm and R95p) and short duration extreme rainfall (RX5day and RX1day). Droughts (CDDd) are identified based on two indicators: The longest dry period (CDD) and the annual cycle. The results demonstrate that CDDd, RX1day and RX5day occurred with more frequency and intensity in SF basin during El Ni?o events. CDDd was of greater magnitude in the TO basin during La Ni?a events, while an increase of RX1day occurred in El Ni?o. The strong El Ni?o events (1983 and 1997) caused more intense and frequent RX1day and R30mm over the PAR basin. Amazon droughts occurred in two out of the six El Ni?o events. Moreover, the relationship between the positive (negative) sea superficial temperatures anomalies in North (South) Tropical Atlantic and drought in AMA basin was corroborated. A gradual warming of SST was observed at the start of 2003 until it achieved a maximum in 2005 associated with the southwestern Amazon drought. The second highest anomaly of SST was in 2010 linked with drought that was more spatially extensive than the 2005 drought. The spatial distribution of annual trends showed a significant increase of CDD in south-eastern AMA, Upper SF, northern PAR and throughout the TO basins. R20mm, RX1day and RX5day tend to increase significantly in southwestern (northeast) PAR (AMA) and northwestern TO basins. Comparisons between CEI derived from daily precipitation data from Climate Prediction Center (CPCp) and of the ETA_HadCM3 model showed that the model overestimated RX1day, RX5day and CDD, in the four basins. Future scenarios show that dry periods will occur with greatest magnitude in all the basins until 2071-2099 time slice, while RX1day will be more intense in the TO and SF basins.
Hábitos alimentarios de larvas de Trichoptera (Insecta) de una cuenca subtropical
Reynaga,María C;
Ecolog?-a austral , 2009,
Abstract: the functional feeding groups of aquatic invertebrates indicate both the type of food source used and the feeding mechanism involved. the groups considered were: collectors (gatherers and filterers), shredders, scrapers and predators. trichoptera larvae display a diversity of trophic adaptations and exploit a variety of microhabitats, but information on their feeding habits in the neotropical region is still incomplete. the main objective of this paper was to analyze the feeding habits and define the functional feeding groups of trichoptera recorded in a subtropical andean basin. the larvae were collected during the low water period and identified to the genus level. diet profiles were obtained through gut content analysis. schoener's proportional similarity index was applied to assess the similarity between diet profiles. a complete linkage dendrogram was obtained and significant clusters (dietary patterns) were identified. the majority of taxa examined prefer more than one food item, being fine particle organic matter present throughout all genera. metrichia, hydroptila, oxyethira and marilia are categorized as collectors-gatherers. nectopsyche is defined as collector-gatherer and secondarily shredder. mortoniella and helicopsyche are primarily scrapers and secondarily collectors-gatherers. chimarra shows a collector-filterer habit. smicridea and polycentropus are basically predators, but they also feed on particles trapped in nets. only four of the ten genera analyzed here correspond to the functional groups already reported for other regions.
El genio femenino y la autoridad literaria: "Luisa Molina" de Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda
Albin,María C.;
Atenea (Concepción) , 2004, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-04622004049000007
Abstract: this work studies the contribution of gertrudis gómez de avellaneda to the development of the spanish american essay through one of her journalistic articles: "luisa molina" (1857). by using an unknown 19th century woman poet as an example of the female genius, gómez de avellaneda explores and revises the concept of genius as it relates to female creativity.
El fantasma de eros: Aura de Carlos Fuentes
Albin,María C;
Atenea (Concepción) , 2006, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-04622006000200008
Abstract: this work proposes a new reading of the novel aura by carlos fuentes. such an approach is based upon the medieval conception of the phantasmatic character of love. in the culture of the middle ages, the phantasm emerges as the origin and object of love. therefore, the novelty of the medieval conception of eros is precisely that it discovers the link that exists between desire and the spectre. in his novel, fuentes depicts the experience of love as a phantasmatic process through the feminine character of aura. the unattainable beauty of the young woman, who represents the phantasm of eros, constitutes the source of her seductive power. as the narration unfolds, three erotic encounters take place between the lovers: the first can be described as the eroticism of the bodies, the second as the eroticism of the sacred, and the last meeting as the epiphany of the unattainable
Asteraceae visited by honeybees in Argentina: a record from entomopalynological studies
Telleria,María C.;
Bolet?-n de la Sociedad Argentina de Bot??nica , 2009,
Abstract: entomopalynological studies of asteraceae in argentina revealed that 64 taxa occurred in food stored by honeybees. the most visited plant tribes were classified according to both the type of reward provided by the different taxa and the intensity that such reward is collected by honeybees. exotic plant taxa were intensely visited inside the disturbed areas (e.g. cardueae and cichorieae tribes), whereas native taxa (e.g. barnadesioideae, mutisieae, astereae and eupatorieae) were intensely visited in less disturbed areas. a large number of identified taxa of asteraceae and the evaluation of its importance to honeybee nutrition were presented. the present study contributes to the knowledge of relationship between asteraceae and honeybees.
