Distribution Range and Population Status of Common Leopard (Panthera Pardus) in and Around Machiara National Park, Azad Jammu and Kashmir

Abstract: The present study was conducted to estimate the status of common leopard (Panthera pardus) in and around Machiara National Park (MNP) Azad Jammu and Kashmir between May 2007 and July 2008. Fifteen fixed transects were monitored on regular basis. Indirect signs of leopard such as pugmarks and scats were recorded along the transects in addition to people and livestock which were counted as an index of disturbance and mean encounter rate for leopard scats, footprints, livestock and people was calculated. Mean encounter rate for leopard pugmarks was 1.6, for scats 2.11, for livestock 25.03, and for people 22.48. Linear measurements of front and hind pugmarks and strides were classified which indicated that at least six to nine (06-09) individuals are present in the study area (13,532 ha). Questionnaire survey revealed that Leopards were sighted by the locals at 23 locations during the study period including; in the morning (35%), evening (29%), night (21%) and daytime (15%). Maximum sightings were recorded between 4765ft to 9634ft elevation presenting moist temperate zone with Pinus wallichiana as a dominant tree species. As a result of increasing biotic pressures, the leopard has become rare with growing threat of further degradation and fragmentation of its habitat. It may cause the species to depend more on the domestic livestock available in and around the area giving way to the problem of human-leopard conflict. The information generated from the study will be helpful for the conservation and management of this critically endangered species.

Abstract: Rangeland analysis of Pabbi Hills Kharian Range in compartment No. 66 Pabbi Rasul Reserved Forest Rangeland Sub-Division Kharian was conducted to determine range vegetation and composition cover during 12-23 May, 2005. Herbage species contributed more towards forage production than the browse ones. Gangir (Grewia populifolia) and Phulai (Acacia modesta) was the major contributor in browse species. The total rang vegetation cover is 32%. In forage production, the maximum contribution was by the perennial grasses that were also true in cover composition parameters. Among all the life forms chamber (Eleusine indica) contribution was maximum followed by Mesquite trace.
Impact of Nursery Seeding Density, Nitrogen, and Seedling Age on Yield and Yield Attributes of Fine Rice

Abstract: producing vigorous seedlings and transplanting them at the appropriate age are the most important factors for obtaining high yield in rice (oryza sativa l.) paddy production. the impact of seeding densities, n, and seedling age was evaluated in this experiment after transplanting 10, 20, 30 and 40-d old seedlings raised by using different seeding rates (high and low) and n conditions (with and without) in the 2008 and 2009 rice growing seasons. the study revealed that 10-d-old nursery seedlings, irrespective of seeding densities and fertilizer application, showed higher yields and yield attributes (productive tillers, plant height, 1000-grain weight, and straw yield), while at later stages significant interaction was observed with nursery management. transplanting of 20-d older fertile seedlings grown with low seeding density at nursery-bed, resulted in a higher number of productive tillers m-2 (233.3, 227.3), straw yield (11.1, 10.7 t ha-1), and final yield (3.6, 3.4 t ha-1) in both years, 2008 and 2009, respectively. yield and yield attributes were significantly reduced by transplanting older seedlings grown at high seeding density and without n application at nursery-bed. minimum productive tillers (165.7, 133), straw yield (8.7, 8.1 t ha-1) and paddy yield (2.0, 1.8 t ha-1) were recorded with transplanting 40-d older seedlings grown at high seeding density and without n application. these findings support the use of young seedling in a system of rice intensification and illustrate that by making a minor additional investment to raise healthy and vigorous seedlings in nursery seed-bed, farmers can improve yields.
Performance of SMEs in Export Growth and Its Impact on Economy of Pakistan

Abstract: The present study was conducted to analyze the potential of SMEs in economy of Pakistan. Data were collected from 300 SMEs units by using Simple random technique. A structural questionnaire was developed to get the response from different SMEs units in Pakistan. Data were analyze by using SPSS-17.0 statistical software. It was revealed that SMEs in Rural Sindh has 45% contribution it can be increase by given facilities of marketing of those products. Moreover, SME exports are concentrated in labor-intensive sub-sectors where low wages are important to enhance the comparative competitive position of foreign markets and as well as SMEs do not necessarily export their products directly but through trade networks. The response rate was 90 percent only three units were sick units from last couple of years. It was further revealed that that potential contribution of SMEs to the sustainable growth of the Pakistan is large. Steps should be taken to ensure that more small firms are able to take advantage of government services. This may improve survival rates and stimulate development in lagging areas.
Effect of Water Logging on Fatty Acid Composition in Cotton Seedling Roots

Abstract: Fatty acid analysis in cotton seedlings following waterlogging showed changes in both their levels and relative composition. This treatment caused a marked increase in the amount of esterified fatty acids. Waterlogging also enhanced the synthesis of a set of low molecular weight compounds and suppressed the synthesis of all the “normal” fatty acids. A significant increase in free fatty acids was also observed.

Abstract: The results of fatty acids analysis suggested that greater unsaturation occurred with increasing germination time. High temperature had a marked effect on fatty acid composition and caused significant changes especially in neutral lipid and glycollpid fatty acids. Small changes were also observed in phophollpid fatty acids. A large increase in free fatty acid was also found, since free fatty acids are known to be damaging to cells.

La producción de plántulas vigorosas y el trasplante en la edad adecuada son los factores más importantes para obtener buenos rendimientos en arroz (Oryza sativa L.). El impacto de la siembra, densidades, N, y edad de las plántulas fue evaluado en este experimento después del trasplante de plántulas de 10, 20, 30 y 40 d cultivadas usando diferentes densidades de siembra (alta y baja) y condiciones de N (con y sin) en el cultivo del arroz temporadas 2008 y 2009. Independiente de la densidad de siembra y la aplicación de fertilizantes, plántulas de vivero de 10-d presentaron mayores rendimientos y componentes de rendimiento (tallos productivos, altura de planta, peso de 1000 granos, y rendimiento de paja), mientras que en etapas posteriores se observó una interacción significativa con el manejo de vivero.
