To leap over borders, to bring about “bridges”, to draw “streets” and itineraries: children’s social construction of meanings about the kindergarden interstitial spaces

Abstract: Subscribing the theoretical frame of Sociology of Childhood and the insights provided by the Sociology and Anthropology of Space, this paper aims to show how children during their daily life in the kindergarden-room had attributed other symbolic significations to institutional space. Ethnographic descriptions analysis of children’s moves, stops and delays across the various spaces of the kindergarden-room try to reveal, in their nomad and sedentary rhythm, some features less perceptible of peer culture routines they institute in interstitial spaces and, based on that, call the attention to some methodological issues about observations of children’s interactions.

Abstract: Subscrevendo os pressupostos da abordagem da Sociologia da Infancia que considera as crian as como actores sociais e advoga a etnografia como uma metodologia útil para fazer ouvir as vozes das crian as na produ o de dados sociológicos (James & Prout 1990), reflectem-se neste texto algumas quest es epistemológicas, teóricas, metodológicas e éticas inerentes à experiência no terreno com um grupo de crian as dos 3-6 anos, durante um ano lectivo, num Jardim de Infancia (JI) localizado em meio urbano. A abordagem do princípio teórico e ético da obten o do consentimento informado e da sua prática junto de crian as pequenas, visa discutir as tens es e os limites entre aquela no o e a de assentimento no decurso da observa o participante. A análise de algumas configura es que o assentimento e as recusas por parte destas crian as podem assumir ao longo da pesquisa, procura evidenciá-locomo um processo contingente, heterogéneo e dependente da rela o social de investiga o que vai sendo construída bem como das interpreta es que as crian as tecem acerca da pessoa da investigadora. Abstract Subscribing the Sociology of Childhood approach that considers children as social actors and advocates ethnography as an useful methodology to let children′s voices to beheard in sociological data production (James & Prout 1990), this text reflects about some epistemological, theoretical, methodological and ethical issues inherent to field work with children aged from 3-6, taken during a school year in a kindergarten located in urban area.Focusing on the theoretical and ethical principle of informed consent and its practice with young children, the text discusses tensions and boundaries between this principle and the one of assent in the course of participant observation. The analysis of children’s assents andrefusals and the configurations that may take over the research, seeks to show the assent processes as contingent, heterogeneous and dependent on the social relations built on research context as well as interpretations that children weave about the person of the researcher.

Abstract: the interest for studying organizational factors that aim to understand the strength and stability of the individual’s attachment to the organization is based on the assumption of the existence is an association of these factors to the variables considered important to organizational efficiency and productivity. employees creat a conviction related to the behavior of the organization towards them. in a social perspective of the exchange, employees who perceive a high level of organizational support may feel an obligation “to reward” the organization. this research centers in the perceived organizational support of nurses, and it analyses the relation ship between demographic and professional variables and this perception. the sample consists of 1027 nurses working in three hospital units, in the governance public sector. the perceived organizational support is in average 2.82±.66 (in a 5 point scale). different levels of perceived organizational support were identified in the three hospitals. the older nurses who have been longer in the profession and in the institution disclose better perceived organziacional support. females nurses perceive better organizational support than male nurses., no statistically significant difference was found, among the professional categories.

Abstract: A produ o política e normativa sobre bem-estar social das crian as, nomeadamente a que emana da Uni o Europeia, apoia-se, usualmente, em referenciais metodológicos que usam valores e ideias tomados aproblematicamente. Esses referenciais revertem para a pesquisa científica de suporte às políticas públicas, que assim reproduzem concep es n o problematizadas sobre os termos de referência utilizados e têm consequência no aparato metodológico mobilizado. Genericamente, essas pesquisas sustentam-se em estatísticas, que aliam à sua natureza extensiva, uma muito reduzida capacidade de dar conta das diferen as e desigualdades entre crian as. Mais ainda, essas metodologias usualmente sustentam-se em procedimentos epistemológicos que perspectivam as crian as a partir de pontos de vista adultocêntricos e etnocêntricos. As quest es da alteridade infantil, da diferen a cultural e até, frequentemente, da desigualdade social, encontram pouca express o na produ o investigativa patente em múltiplos relatórios, nomeadamente nos originários das grandes organiza es europeias e internacionais. Em simultaneo, dimens es como a ac o e as culturas infantis s o dificilmente apreendidas nessas investiga es sobre bem-estar. A partir de uma perspectiva alternativa, procuramos neste artigo estabelecer as bases teóricas, epistemológicas e metodológicas que permitam, na análise do bem-estar infantil, cruzar os indicadores estruturais com as dimens es da subjectividade, e os factores sociais com a interpreta o e ac o das crian as, enquanto actores sociais concretos.The political and normative production about children social welfare, especially the one produced in the European Union, is usually based on methodological references that use values and ideas unproblematically taken. These references are related to the scientific research that supports public policies, reproducing conceptions that are not problematized about the referential terms used, having consequences on the mobilized methodological apparatus. These studies are generally supported by statistics that adds to its extensive nature a very short capacity of dealing with differences and dissimilarities between children. Moreover, these methodologies are usually based on epistemological proceedings that analyses the children from points of view focused on adults or ethnicity. The questions about children alterity, cultural diversity and even social dissimilarity find weak expression on the investigative production in several reports, especially the ones produced in important international and European organizations. Diferen?as de cultura entre Institui??es de Ensino Superior Público e Privado: Um estudo de caso

Abstract: abstract: the aim of this study is to demonstrate the culture differences between two higher education institutions: public and private. according to the model of regulation for market mechanisms (correia, amaral & magalh?es, 2002), it is expected that private universities possess a more external oriented culture than public universities, which have a larger dependence on the state. this research project integrated a quantitative methodology with the use of a questionnaire, based on the contrasting values model (quinn & mcgrath, 1985), which was later adapted to measure school culture dimensions. a qualitative methodology was also used in this study with a structured interview, based on the theoretical models of organizational and school culture (bergquist, 1992; quinn, 1991; schein, 1992; torres, 1997). the questionnaire was given to 62 employees of the public institution and 52 collaborators from the private sector. a total of 10 interviews were also applied to the public university and 8 interviews to the private institution. the results revealed higher culture values in the private university. however, the significant differences (p < 0,05) reflected a larger market culture orientation. the study also displayed a larger bureaucratic culture (p < 0,05) in the private university, with reference to the rules and formal communication patterns. the public university denoted, through the discriminating analysis, a larger approximation to clan cultures - a result which was interpreted by the informal relation-ship that was depicted amongst the interviewees. lastly, both public and private directing committees of the higher education institutions showed interest in developing flexibility patterns in the creation and innovation of new courses or scholarship programmes.

Abstract: the aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of combined use of cistus ladanifer and cistus salviifolius for environmental rehabilitation of abandoned mine areas from iberian pyrite belt. soils from s?o domingos mine area are heterogeneous, due to different characteristics of the original materials, and showed high total concentrations of trace elements (1940-3030 mg as kg-1; 210-237 mg cu kg-1; 5280-9210 mg pb kg-1). available fractions of trace elements presented, in general, small concentrations which vary with soils characteristics. cistus salviifolius presented larger concentrations of as, cu and zn than c. ladanifer, however the former species showed the smallest pb concentration. both cistus plants have an excellent capacity for colonization of these degraded areas and are well adapted to contaminated soils with low nutrient contents. it is apparent that these plants can be used for environmental rehabilitation of mining areas from iberian pyrite belt.

Abstract: context: the portuguese health system has been subject to constant reforms that have been achieved without the expected results. considering organizational culture as a variable which can dictate the success of a particular change / reform, and starting from the assumption that it is manageable, knowing about the organizational culture that is prevalent in health facilities seems to be important for those who manage them, primarily during the course of processes of change, such as the implementation of new management models. objective: to identify the type of organizational culture that prevails in public health facilities with different management models. method: a cross-sectional quantitative study, performed with a sample of 671 employees from ten health facilities with different management models: public sector administration model (sector publico administrativo - spa), public enterprise entity model (entidade publica empresarial - epe) and family health unit model (unidade de saude familiar - usf). to identify the perception of organizational culture the organizational culture assessment instrument (ocai) was used; it was translated, adapted and validated by us. results: in the spa and epe models, there is a predominance of hierarchical culture, whereas in usf model clan culture exists. conclusion: the organizational culture that prevails, particularly at hospital level (hierarchical culture), in health facilities, does not seem to be the most appropriate for the philosophy underlying the implementation of new management models, and its functioning. it is considered relevant to extend the study of the perception of organizational culture in each management model of health facilities, and relate it with context variables.

Abstract: Este estudo teve como objectivo avaliar o potencial de utiliza o conjunta de Cistus ladanifer e Cistus salviifolius na recupera o ambiental de áreas mineiras abandonadas da Faixa Piritosa Ibérica. Os solos de S o Domingos s o muito heterogéneos, devido aos materiais que lhes deram origem, apresentando concentra es totais (mg kg-1) elevadas de As (1940-3030), Cu (210-237) e Pb (5280-9210). Contudo, a frac o disponível é, geralmente, baixa variando consoante as características dos solos. O comportamento face aos elementos vestigiais variou com a espécie: C. salviifolius apresentou maiores concentra es de As, Cu e Zn relativamente ao C. ladanifer, contudo para o Pb observou-se o contrário. As plantas de C. ladanifer e C. salviifolius s o uma boa aposta para a recupera o ambiental de áreas mineiras da Faixa Piritosa Ibérica pois, apresentam excelente capacidade para colonizar áreas degradadas, grande tolerancia a elevadas concentra es de elementos vestigiais no solo, adaptando-se bem a solos nutricionalmente pobres. Abstract: Contexto: o sistema de saude portugues tem vindo a ser palco de reformas constantes sem que se tenham obtido os resultados esperados. Considerada enquanto variavel organizacional, que pode ditar o sucesso de determinada mudanca/reforma, e partindo-se do pressuposto que e gerivel, conhecer a cultura organizacional que predomina nas instituicoes de saude parece ser importante para quem as gere, principalmente perante processos de mudanca, como seja a implementacao de novos modelos de gestao. Objetivo: identificar o tipo de cultura organizacional que predomina em instituicoes publicas de saude com diferentes modelos de gestao. Metodo: estudo de tipo quantitativo e transversal, realizado numa amostra de 671 colaboradores de dez instituicoes de saude com diferentes modelos de gestao: modelo Sector Publico Administrativo (SPA), modelo Entidade Publica Empresarial (EPE) e modelo Unidade de Saude Familiar (USF). Para identificar a percecao da cultura organizacional recorreu-se ao Organizational Culture Assessment Instrument (OCAI), que foi por nos traduzido, adaptado e validado. Resultados: nos modelos SPA e EPE verifica-se um predominio da cultura hierarquica, enquanto no modelo USF sobressai a cultura de cla. Conclusao: a cultura organizacional que prevalece nas instituicoes de saude, nomeadamente a nivel hospitalar (cultura hierarquica), nao parece ser a mais adequada a filosofia subjacente aos novos modelos de gestao e seu funcionamento. Considera-se pertinente alargar o estudo da percecao da cultura organizacional em cada modelo de gestao das instituicoes de saude e relacionar com variaveis de contexto. Contexto: el sistema de salud portugues ha sido el escenario de constantes reformas sin que por ello se hayan obtenido los resultados esperados. Considerada como una variable organizacional, que puede dictar el exito de un determinado cambio o reforma, y partiendo de la suposicion de que es gestionable, conocer la cultura organizacional que predomina en las instituciones de salud parece ser importante para quienes las dirigen, principalmente ante los procesos de cambio, como lo es la implementacion de nuevos modelos de gestion. Gastric suture line ulcer: An unexpected cause of gastrointestinal bleeding

Abstract: gastrointestinal bleeding due to suture line ulceration has been attributed to use of non?absorbable silk sutures. we report a case of a 63?year?old male with gastrointestinal bleeding due to gastric suture line ulceration after splenectomy performed 11 years ago. emergent upper endoscopy revealed a small gastric ulcer with a visible vessel and raised the suspicion of gastric varices. an endoscopic ultrasound was performed, showing a gastric hyperechogenic area in the mucosa layer with an acoustic shadow. upper endoscopy with a transparent cap was repeated and a mobile foreign body in the ulcer′s bed was found. it was successfully removed by forceps. after the procedure a silk suture line of 3.5 cm was identified
