Higher transactivation activity associated with LTR and Tat elements from HIV-1 BF intersubtype recombinant variants
Gabriela Turk, Mauricio Carobene, Ana Monczor, Andrea Rubio, Manuel Gómez-Carrillo, Horacio Salomón
Retrovirology , 2006, DOI: 10.1186/1742-4690-3-14
Abstract: Differential transcriptional activity was measured for the BF recombinant LTR/Tat complex that is present in widely spread viral variants was demonstrated. This analysis demonstrated a higher activity for the BF complex when compared to its B subtype counterpart.This study indicates structural and functional consequences of recombination events within the LTR promoter and Tat transactivator protein of a naturally occurring HIV-1 recombinant form.Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) is a diploid retrovirus whose genome consists of two RNA molecules per virion. This viral RNA serves as the template for proviral DNA synthesis by the virus-encoded reverse transcriptase (RT) enzyme.HIV-1 is characterized by its rapid genetic evolution and high diversity, as demonstrated by the large number of different HIV-1 strains isolated around the world. This rapid genetic variation provides the virus with maximum adaptation efficiency and presents serious challenges for chemotherapy and vaccine development against HIV-1 infection.Major mechanisms that contribute to HIV-1 genetic variation include: a high mutation rate as a consequence of its error-prone reverse transcriptase, and recombination [1,2]. Genetic recombination plays an important role in the evolution of HIV-1 [3]. Since two RNA molecules are packaged into each virion, RT can use portions of each RNA as template during reverse transcription to generate a recombinant viral DNA, redistributing the genetic information. Therefore, rapid recombination of the HIV-1 genome creates a vast advantage for viral evolution and an enormous difficulty for the host to control the infection.Accumulating evidence has confirmed the existence of recombinant HIV-1 in nature [4]. Some of these recombinant viruses have become fixed in the human population and are referred to as circulating recombinant forms (CRFs), and in a few cases CRFs have become the predominant strain in specific geographic areas [5,6].Previous studies from our lab

Abstract: objective: report one case of ectopic spleen simulating a renal tumor. we performed a review of etiopathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment. methods: we present the case of a 54-year-old splenectomized female patient with the incidental diagnosis on ultrasound of a left kidney upper pole mass simulating a renal tumor. results: after the performance of ct scan, and with the suspicion of renal neoplasia, the patient underwent tumorectomy with the pathologic diagnosis of the specimen compatible with supernumerary spleen. conclusions: we emphasize the importance of including pseudo masses of splenic origin in the differential diagnosis of left renal, adrenal and retroperitoneal tumors. we emphasize the importance of ct scan as the imaging test of choice, and gammagraphy as a complementary test. we point out conservative attitude as the most suitable in cases of asymptomatic pseudomass of splenic origin.
Salomón Tarquini,Claudia;
Mundo agrario , 2010,
Abstract: by the late 19th century, indigenous populations in argentina's regions of pampa, patagonia and chaco were subordinately incorporated into capitalist economy, through a series of genocidal and destribalization policies that have been thoroughly examined in previous studies. however, the circumstances of their integration and the strategies that indigenous actors displayed have not been systematically analyzed yet. this paper is focused on ranquel population in territorio nacional de la pampa to study land use and access ways, as well as the development of such settlings and their reproduction strategies during the first half of the 20th century.
Salomón,Alejandra;
Mundo agrario , 2011,
Abstract: in this work we will examine the mediating function of the political local leaders in the construction of the foundations of the identification with the buenos aires peronism. these, without being direct collaborators of perón, recovered a fundamental role at the moment of generating power and prestige to the peronism in localities "extracéntricas", removed from the centers of power and you insert in rural contexts. is it possible to name them as the "third line" of leadership peronist? to answer this mystery, we will explore from a microanalytical perspective the paths and increasing participation in the political sphere of some figures that allowed them, in major or minor degree, to turn into political local modals and to constitute social bases. we ask ourselves which was the foundation of legitimacy of his power and which was the margin of autonomy which they were possessing with regard to the instances of provincial and national power
Enfermedad inflamatoria del intestino: colitis ulcerativa
Salomón,Ricardo;
Gaceta Médica de Caracas , 2007,
Abstract: the etiology of ulcerative colitis remains unknown. the principal hypothesis have included infection, allergy to dietary components, inmune responses to bacterias or self antigens, the possibility of abnormalities in the epithelial cell and genetic susceptibility. it is also possible that immunologic mecanisms within the colonic lamina propria are involved in the pathogenesis affecting both humoral and cellular responses. genetic factors seems to play an important role as evidenced by the increased incidence among several members of the same family. it seems likely that several genes are involved in determining susceptibility to the disease. there are not important advances in the field of medical therapy after the introduction of steroids, inmunomodulators, salycilates and ciclosporyn.
Hocsman,Salomón;
Estudios atacame?os , 2006, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-10432006000200006
Abstract: changes in lithic technology that occurred during the transition from hunter-gatherers to agro-pastoralist societies in southern andes centro sur, are studied. specifically, diachronic variations in flaked stone tools frequencies recorded in archaeological sites of antofagasta de la sierra (southern argentinean puna) between 5500-1500 years bp, are analyzed. time and energy investment in the manufacture of lithic tools, are utilized. variations in tool frequencies are compared with archaeological data from northern argentinean puna and its border, and from the puna border of the northern desert of chile. aspects of decision-making processes related to technological change, are explored.
LA CLIOMETRíA Y LA HISTORIA ECONóMICA INSTITUCIONAL: REFLEJOS LATINOAMERICANOS
kalmanovitz,salomón;
Historia Crítica , 2004,
Abstract: this essay narrates the development of cliometrics and neo-institutional history in the united states and its problems of acceptance among latin american academics in general and in colombia in particular. there is rivalry between the two schools because they respond to somewhat different theoretical bases: whereas the former is based on neo- classical economic theory, the second questions its assumptions about the absence of frictions and institutions. modern economic history had to compete with dependency theory in latin america and only found some acceptance when the latter began to show problems of inconsistency, lack of rigour, absence of falseability tests, and inability to predict. cliometrics was rejected from the start in colombia, together with william p. mcgreevey's economic history of colombia, and it took more than twenty years for it to recover recognition of its usefulness for understanding the past, while neo-institutional history is only just beginning to be accepted.
Salomón,Alejandra;
Revista Pilquen , 2011,
Abstract: the aim of the offer is to bring over some reflections that help to explain the genesis and the consolidation of the peronism in the province of buenos aires, basically rural interior still not marked by the fingerprint of the industrialization. how to do it when it is not possible to appeal to the working old men or migrantes recent? for it we suggest to delimit as object of study the local thing and the rural thing. this approach, with his scopes and methodological problems, will allow to observe the particularities and to make complex a phenomenon of great importance.
